View Full Version : Slowing down for trolling
I am running a 150 Mariner, and the slowest I can get it to go per my GPS is around 3.5mph. Ideally I would like to be at least 2mph, what are some ways to slow it down? Do you have it trimmed all the way up or down?
Thanks!
Sean

tie a 5 gallon bucket to a rope and tie to a rear cleat that will slow you down enough

What do you think about tying it off to the side? This way it will be out of the way ???

You've got a couple of options. *You can try what skools said or a drift sock. *Both work but there's storage and deployment issues. *Forgetting to pull the bucket(s) in could result in damage to the boat or even you or a passenger.
I think the #1 way to slow down (if you don't need to sneak) is with a kicker motor. *I have a 9.9hp on a bracket and it works excellent. *Can get down to 1mph if I want to or anywhere between 1 and 2.
Now if you wanna sneak - get a nice bow mounted electric trolling motor.
Then there's trolling plates. *I've had experience with the one below on my old 17ft boat. *Its called a Hustle trolling plate. *I loved the plate. *With the springs on it you don't have to worry about engaging/disengaging anything. *Boat worked well in reverse too. *I could go as slow as I wanted using it too. *The downsides are - 1) having to drill holes in your cavitation plate 2) Its permanently mounted and alot of people ask "what's that?" 3) The springs and i-bolts are not stainless. *You can replace the i-bolts with stainless but I haven't found stainless springs to fit and they would be expensive.
Mind you I've never tried it on a V20 but I'd be willing to bet it would work great! *If I didn't have a kicker I might go that route because I like to troll flounder and trout in the creeks.

Also the guy at johnson marine supply is top notch and will be happy to speak with anyone over the telephone that might have questions. *I've called him a couple of times *;)
You might also want to look into some of the other brands of trolling plates, but I looked at a lot of them and I really like the Hustle for ease of use and the hole allows you to go in reverse.

Lead core/wire line is exactly what we are doing. Trolling Bunker Spoons and T & W along the bottom. I am going to try the "Bucket system" tomorrow and then invest in a trolling plate in the next few weeks.
This is probably a dumb question but do you drill holes in the buckets? ::)
Thanks again, I'll let you know how it turns out

Well the bucket got me basiclly were I wanted to be with minimal trouble. Although it seems I was the only one not getting fish, but thats another story.
I defenatly interested in a kicker motor but it seems I have minimal space on my transom. I was woundering what the minimal/maximum HP you guys have/are using as kickers?

Seems small?
As alway, I apreciate the help/input

You should be able to put a bracket there. The base on the brackets are only about 4 inches wide by like maybe 6 inches tall. Thru-bolt it on with a backing plate on the inside and seal everything up real good with some 5200.
I'd recommend 9.9 or a 15hp with a 20" shaft. The shortshaft 15" may work but I think it would come out of the water with the roll of the waves.
I have a 9.9 and it is plenty motor for me. Don't know about other models but the Johnson 9.9 and 15 are (were) the same size. I think there's a carb difference and some other things that make one 15 as oppposed to 9.9. I believe it weighs around 70 pounds, but not sure about that. It pushes the boat up to around 7 or 8 mph.
The motor I have came with the boat. The guy bought the motor on eBay. He paid $400 and some dollars for it and it runs really good.

Blue_Runner thanks for the links. They are a little to far for me to travel, I am in RI, but it is good to see that they are in somewhat reasonalbe price.
Just another thing to add to the, "I need this" list

Hey Sean: Why do you want to troll so slow? do you want to catch healthy fish or handicaped fish? If you fish in salt water 1200 rpm is good.

Not for Stripers on the Tube and Worm ;D
If your not on the bottom, and under 2mph, you are waisting your time.
I am a equal opertunity guy, handicap fish need to be caught to ::)

Yep, different tactics for different fish. We troll around 5 knots for billfish, around 7 knots for tuna, and barely 2.5 knots for rock aka striped bass. Spanish like it even faster, and hoo's, heck they get caught at 15 knots plus.
