After careful consideration, we may be willing to open the membership books for the Norton Snagger Fishing Team. I have breifly talked to the Exalted Wizard of the Norton Snagger Fishing Team, Reelapeelin, and we have toyed with opening it up if you can meet the conditions and pass the iniation process.

You have to complete 6 tasks before you can be considered to join the Norton Snagger Fishing team.
1st - Figure out what a Norton Snagger is
2nd - Find the picture of the original Norton Snagger
(Hint - it's in my gallery)
3rd - Find the picture of the Norton Snagger Official Chapeau
4th - Find 3 Members to okay your membership
5th - Find the original reference to Norton Snagger, with proof
6th - Beg me really hard

The the Iniation process, which Rap is in charge of, will be a very interesting process too.

Howz 'bout a trade...You let me in the NSFT. and I'll make you an honorary member of the Flyin'Fisherman Club. Usually the only requirement for that is ya have to been throw outta your boat while it's underway.

Went out today about 15 miles and hit a school of yellowfin. Caught a seagull too. On the way in seas had turned from 5-7 to 8-10. Almost re-qualified for FFC status when my helm seat detached and I rolled assover elbows to the poopdeck. What'a ride. :P

Hammerhead ... glad you survived you summersault boat ride today...however, flyfishin', while something I've always admired and intended to get around to one day, will not be sufficient task for consideration for entry into the overly dramatic exclusivity of the NSFT (whad he say ???)...

...anyway, for those who wish to be considered, see entry tasks above as outlined by The Grand Pubah Himself. 8) ...good luck to all who attempt the initiation rites ;D ;D ;D ...

We possibly have our first qualifier for the Norton Snagger Fishing Team. This is contingent on verification by my Esteemed Cohort and the Master Of Arms of The Norton Snagger Fishing Team, the ever Noble, Reelapeelin ( Oz ). I will forward the entry information to him. But enough of the official bidness, I would like to congratulate Cyensen for completing the task required to join our illustrous brotherhood!

Now that I have passed the test, when does RAP's initiation process begin. Am I going to be baiting hooks on his boat, or washing it when he pulls it, or in charge of making chum? ??? :-/

So am I an official member? How do I get a hat?

WE DON'T MAKE TOO MUCH NOISE ABOUT THE CLUB, OTHERWISE IT WOULDN'T BE EXCLUSIVE, YOU CAN CONTACT OTHER MEMBERS YOU THINK ARE WORTH TO JOIN AND HAVE THEM COMPLETE THE PROCESS. BUT YOU HAVE TO ADMIT THAT THERE WAS A LITTLE BIT OF EFFORT TO GAIN THE EXHALTED MEMBER STATUS, SOME GUYS EITHER AREN'T MOTIVTED ENOUGH OR SMART ENOUGH TO COMPLETE THE TASK!

THAT OUGHT TO STIR UP SOME RESPONSES

Norton Snagger
Fishing Team

The Official Initiation

The Snagger Grand Slam Catch

You must catch and photograph at least 4 different species of fish, in whatever geographic area you chose (excluding pet stores and having fish tossed to you at the seafood market)

Official Decree of the
Grand Pubah

reelapeelin
12-02-2006, 01:36 PM
OK guys...there it is...direct from His Highness, The Almighty Grand Pubah Hisself :o ...

...all who did such a great job trackin' down and answerin' the 6 tasks now got a little fishin' to do (we thought appropriate initiation for a fishin' team)...

Blue Runner, for example can go to High Rock and catch bream, bass, crappie and cat and he's IN!!...or he can wait til he gets to OBX and get his Slam on down there...

Coastal dwellers (and you KNOW who you are) can go and catch any 4 species (on hook & line) ya wanna...and you're IN!!

So sharpen those hooks ...Just kiddin' about the nipple-piercing, but if that's your thing, we don't need to know and we sure as he!! don't want pix ::) ...but have some fun w/ this and post 'em up once you're done ;) ...until your Slam is complete, consider yourself a Pending Snagger...Upon completion of said Slam you'll be an Offifial Member of the Norton Snagger Fishing Team, with all benefits and privileges (different Super Model every night) and a NSFT Official Hat (just like mine and The Pubah's...)

Good luck and tight lines to all future Norton Snaggers 8) 8) 8) ...

Being the Grand Pubah instills one with unique insight. There has been a disturbance in the force Luke....... errrrrr wrong subject. Anyhow, after careful consideration, I have an announcement.

CHUMBUCKET has been chosen to be the first member inducted by The Norton Snagger Fishing Team draft. Not as good as the benefits you get in the NFL draft, but better than the ARMY. My illustrious co=founder Reelapeelin and I decided this based on many things.
First, we had an odd number of members, and some are just plain odd!!! Second, We didn't have sufficent membership to represent us in the Great Snowy North East. Third, all of us are aware of that "don't ask-don't tell" relationship he shares with another member. I won't mention any names but his initials are MJ. We figured they could snuggle and keep from freezing their Norts off!

Congratulations CB!!! Glad to have ya!!!

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm. Thanks. I think. ??? :-[ I'm not sure how I feel about the "don't ask - don't tell" policy of the Society of Norton Snaggers.

I'm honored that Hizzoner Franco and Sargent-at-Arms RAP have chosen me for an honorary membership.
I will certainly give my best shot and live up to the rigors of such an illustrious group of snaggers.

MJ; maybe we do need to plan that trip we discussed for Mackerel and possibly some Cod.

MJ was trying to entice me into a fishing trip in the next few days as I forwarded a report to him of some decent Mackerel being caught in our area right now.
I told him that between chemo treatments, pain meds, and anti-nausea meds, I didn't think I'd be up to it right now. Stuffs been kicking the crap outta me. :-[ :-/

Maybe. Might need to post my entries in the spring though. ;)

12-08-2006, 03:25 AM
Chum, you still going to bed with that rod. ;D
You ever get a reel yet.

Again, I know nothing to fishing. I just spear them. ;D

I sleep with my rod in hand every night. :o Wish I could get Mrs chumbucket to take over that duty. ;D ::)
The money is tucked away right now. I think some other good friends are going to hook me up with a baitcaster for the St. Croix. If so, I'll be looking into a light spinning reel to replace the other reel that was stolen.

Penn reels were once a standard in the fishing world. They're loosing ground very quickly though. Other than the big conventionals, they're now being manufactured in the far east. Not that reels from the far east are bad. Some are better than others though. Penn let technology pass them by a long time ago and pretty much stuck with the status quo without incorporating many new features that fishermen desired. At the same time, they discontinued reels that fishermen wanted to remain in their offerings. A lot of people are now out of work in the PA area due to these moves made by Penn.
So, they've fallen out of favor in my eyes (for a while now actually) as there are many other reels that I consider better values and have better features for the money.

msbhammer
12-08-2006, 03:45 AM
No wonder I see so many for sale now. They must have belonged to the guys laid off and are disgusted in having them. :-/

chumbucket
12-08-2006, 04:09 AM
Penn sold so many reels over the years, there will probably never be a shortage of them. There are a certain few models that are somewhat rare and coveted when someone can get their hands on one.
Two reels that were discontinued that really pissed people off are the Penn Squidder (140 and several variants of it) and the Penn Z series Spinfisher reels such as the 704z, 706z.
The Z series Spinning reels are favored among surfcasters for being able to take a lot of abuse when exposed to dunking in the salt as well as sand, rocks, etc. Most of the time, they only required minor maintenance like flushing with fresh water, oil, and lube and you're good to go. very simple to work on too and parts were easy to come by.
The Penn Squidder enjoyed one of the longest production runs with very few changes other than spool material, handle changes and a few other variants lie a narrow frame model. Otherwise unchanged from the '30's up until about a year ago. Again, although many people shy away from working on conventional reels, I found them very easy to tear down and maintain. Old technology that still performs like a workhorse. One of MJ's favorite reels. I recently passed on to him a narrow frame model that I reconditioned. The narrow frame models are harder to come by. The narrow frames are nice because the weight of the reel is centered above the rod, whereas the standard wide frame has a tendency to roll to the side giving your wrists a workout. We all know that MJ is a fragile delicate flower and his wrists can't handle it. You would think they could with all the porn surfing he does, I'm sure they get a good workout. ;) ;D

So, I guess that's more information than you ever wanted to know about fishing reels. Eh hammer? ;D
You did ask though. ;D

msbhammer
12-08-2006, 04:16 AM
Thanks for the low down. My dad passed away and several rods were passed on to me. All I know about them is that they are big and wide and gold in color with blue fishing line. He used them for pier fishing in Pauly's Island SC. Decided to keep them there for family to use or whenever I come down. Whenever the family is fishing on the pier, they always keep his reel out as if he was still there. ;)

Hammer, nice wifey ;D

CB, I have a Squidder 140 that I bought on eBay. Its an oldie that didn't see much use until I got it. I think its a great reel. The only thing I could possible complain about is the slow retrieve.

What about the jigmaster models? Know anything about em? I've thought about buying one.

Thanks,
Blue

chumbucket
12-08-2006, 12:16 PM
Yeah. The slow retrieve can be a detriment in some cases. 3.3:1 is pretty slow. But, because of that, it's like a winch. Capable of pulling up some big fish.
The Jigmaster is another fine reel. Not as castable as the Squidder, but again, a true workhorse of a reel. I know a couple of guys that put casting magnets in them to surf cast with, but they have heavy spools and can still be prone to overruns. The Jigmaster is an excellent reel for light trolling situations. Because of the metal reel, they can even be loaded up for wire line trolling or jigging. Excellent reel for way under $100. 8)

chumbucket
12-08-2006, 12:20 PM
Hey Blue. What type of spool does your old Squidder have? For casting the preferred spool is the plastic with air brake fins. They were discontinued long ago. The other favored spool is aluminum (should be flat gray in color), then the chromed metal. The nice feature on these is the quick spool change with just the turn of a thumb screw. Pop the spool out, and drop in another. 8)

Blue_Runner
12-08-2006, 01:04 PM
Plastic - I've surf casted it before with good results. * :D

I gave about $23 for it on eBay - including shipping! *Near mint condition. *I got a gooooood deal!

Its maroon with maroon spool and the old green swirly knob on the handle. *Vintage. *;)

Exactly like this one:

I find the Zebco closed-faced reels to keep the pancake syrup outta the spool when knockin' back those last few link-sausages...a must when surf-casting in the cold... ;D ...

Welcome to da NSFT, CB...we did need some reliable representation in the N.E. 8) ...

As CB said I am a Penn man, But I am looking to move off them when I start needing stuff.

I have a bunch of different ones, spinning & Conventional

!46 which is the narrow version of the 140 IMO is the best dam reel you will ever use for heavy Fluke fishing!!

I have caught over 2000 pounds of Fluke in a season with noting more then a quick rinse in fresh water after each trip.
The thing has been dunked, dropped, banged you name its seen it!!
With the one CB gave me I now have 4, well 2 are 140 conversions, They are the same reel except for the width.

I also have 2 Jigmaster 500, they are also work horses and make a great reel for bass fishing!!
They are a bit heavy but work well!

I bought new reel a couple of years ago a Penn 535 to replace the Jigmaster, Its a great reel and made of graphite. Its a great reel for eeling as it has a 6:1 and when that bass takes the ell give her a 3 count and BAM, you turn her around fast with that 6:1

So yes I am a Penn man for years now!! One of the reasons it that you can go into almost any Good tackle shop and they are going to have parts right there for you!!

And they take a licking and keep on ticking!!

Here are a few pic's of the man cave!!

Here's the Squidder I gave to MJ. I was actually a 140, but I converted it to a 146 narrow spool. This one has a Newell aluminum spool that I installed one casting magnet into. The "coffee grinder" handle is from an old Garcia Mitchell 623 conventional. Everything was stripped, cleaned, painted, lubed, etc.
That reel will throw a plug crazy distances. 8)

Some do for casting control. Some have brake blocks which are small cylindrical tubes the slide on one or more rods attached to the end of the spool. Centrifical force pushes the to the outside ring applying very slight pressure. These help with baitcasters to prevent overruns, birds nests, wind knots. Whatever you want to call them. these reels are generally more forgiving for casting plugs any distance. Makes the learning curve a lot easier, and you can tune the reel to any way you like by adding or removing blocks, magnets, or whatever.
We'll make a fisherman out of you yet hammer. ;)

macojoe
12-08-2006, 04:20 PM
I have all mine adjusted pretty good, I have not had a bird nest in a long time years!!
But IMO Penn doesn't make a good casting reel unless you do some Mod's.

If I were a surf guy or did a lot of casting from the boat, Penn would not be a consideration, I would have to look into something else.

I have Penn, shimano, Okuma, Abu Garcia, and maybe the odd Mitchel laying around. They each have +'s and -'s. They all serve their purpose, and thats how I explain to my wife that I need them. She understands now. I suppose she's OK with my fishing addiciton in both reels and tackle,...and boats. After all, I only have one woman and thats whats most important to her.

See REEL, ya look like ya know what your doing. We have two favorites round these parts. One is the bent pole sonar = easy way to find fish. The other is the guys who ride around w/ a big bag of popcorn. Ride away from the fish and deploy the popcorn, gets the birds workin reel good and then every boat within five miles converges on nothin'. Dirty trick if I ever heard of one. ;)

Watching others catch fish is enjoyable. Last year my son and I got to go out on a short trip, not much biting but when my rod bent over and I grabed it I know it was worth catching. I handed the rod to my son and told him to pull it in while I watched his rod. He pulled in the 19" flounder that I posted with his picture. Boy that really made his day. That will be a day we will both remember for a while.

He wants to go out every time I mention fishing. Just wish I had more time to take him. The days I get to go he is in school and most of the time when he's not in school I have to work. :'( Am going to try harder this year.

With me they all know I'm armed, most believe I'm semi certifiable to begin with. So what has been working so far is to stand there, shake their hand and stare straight into their eyes for a second or two.
They usually wilt or turn away pretty quick.

How about telling them while you are holding a 45 in your hands, "I got no problem going back to prison".

Tell them you've already had 2 assault with deadly weapons charges and one more is automatic prison time - so you plan on making the third one count ;)

A buddy of mine who's retired now used the gun cleaning bit, except he would use an M-16 for his prop. And on top of that, he WAS crazy. Retired and went to Iraq for 2 years, training the police over there.
