Was docked at Dudley's over the weekend. Stayed at Pebble Beach condos. We caught some spanish and blues. 7 keeper spanish between 14 - 20 inches. Lots of little spanish too. Pics to follow.
The big story was that we saw a school of Tarpon rolling around the seabouy out of Bogue inlet. Man what a sight. I stood on the bow and they broke right down in front of me like 3 times. Awesome!
My buddy saw them first. He said it was a school of drum. I got over there and saw the dorsal fins and knew immediately it wasn't drum. 8)

I don't know what the hell's wrong with me! I'm still waiting on you guys to diagnose my condition.
They broke 3 times in 30 seconds right near the boat. All I had was a 5 inch finger mullet and a flounder rig besides the clarkspoons we were pulling.
Had they kept breaking I would've tried to throw something at them. :-/ But they stopped as soon as they started :( Awesome sight though.

The Tarpon are moving out into the ocean as the water is cooling along the pamlico, neuse and intercoastal and I think they are pretty much out of here until next year. I've also seen them school up on the surface in front of my dock on the intercoastal and but I can't get them to hit anything . I saw some big ones caught last month in front of Oriental but still In the Neuse river by guys bottom fishing at night with cut mullet. I had a couple big ones on but its hard to get a hook through the jaw bone and usually you catch puppy drum along with big black drum in the same spot which is OK by me but I would like to get a big tarpon. I'm glad you got some spanish and I hope they stick around for a while but a cold snap will also send them moving out into deeper water. Mr. Dudley is quite a character with his talking parrott crapping all over the floor and his old deaf coon dog, live shrimp etc. and he has everything including good fishing advice...He could probably get a fortune for the marina .......Frank

Prices at Dudley's were excellent. Tackle there was cheaper than Bass Pro Shops.
and his old deaf coon dog
Yeah, can't remember that dog's name? But a cool old dog for sure!
Skools, I didn't even get out the camera :-/ My friend does have a couple of Spanish pics though.
Had one meal of fried spanish at the beach and then another of grilled spanish back home. Even had leftovers for work 8) We probably caught 30 some in all including around 10 blues and 20 some spanish with only 7 keepers.
I trolled 5 rods with clarkspooons. Port side forward I had my rodrigger (aka downrodder, holds rod horizontaly). Port rear #2 planer, starboard rear #2 planer deeper than port. In the center I had one way way back, and finally on the starboard side forward I had one on top about half way back. I really would have liked to have had a flatline release clip off the rear of the boat for that rod. :-/ All 5 rods caught fish, we musta done something right. My buddy in the Grady couldn't muster a keeper but did catch a spanish or two and some blues.
The spanish was mighty good ;) BTW we caught the spanish just east of the sea bouy. We did run to Charlie bouy one day and it was a little sloppy and we really weren't marking any bait there. We also tried AR-342 and Keypost with finger mullet as well with no luck at either. All in all we burned around 67 gallons of fuel in 3 days of fishing. Had the full curtains on the whole time. Thursday fished in the rain.
I wish my friend would send me those pictures ???

Some days are like that. I was out all day today in my 17 Mako and it was too rough at the inlet so I trolled all around the Beaufort turning basin, shackelford banks, the Newport Marshes etc and never had a hit..finally about 3 it died down so I started drifting for flounder and hit a nice king on a flounder rig but lost him at the boat and caught a couple small flounder , got soaked twice ..should of stayed home...Frank
