So I found this motor in the classifieds at work.....the guy told me it was a 24" shaft but that just does not seem right. I am guessing he measured something to get that number but not the correct measurment. Does this look like a short shaft?

I don't THINK it's a 24" shaft...sure doesn't LOOK like it...it should make a good Kicker for a "V", though ;) ...

OK, well I checked again and it is listed as "short shaft" despite him saying 24"......seems like that is too short based on previous threads I have read here.

Looks good. I think you can convert it to 20" w/o much trouble.

Well, regardless of whether someone calls it a "short" shaft or "long" shaft, you need to know the measurement.

Some people call 20" a short shaft. Some call it a long shaft.

I'm fairly certain that 15" is a true short shaft, while 20" is a true long shaft. Which leads me to 25" which would be an extra-long shaft. Then a 30" would be xx-long shaft I suppose ? Furthermore, If I'm not mistaken you should be able to measure from the motor mount down to the top cavitation plate to get the measurement.

Good luck!

That looks to me like a 20" shaft.

I hava 20" shaft on the 6hp Johnson that's attached to a kicker bracket on my I/O...works perfect. Any longer it would drag while under way with the main.

Looks like a 20" to me as well. That's a decent price also, new would be about 1400 or so.

So I asked the guy to measure this distance and he said 18". *Go figure......I'll assume it is a 20". *I think I drew the lines in the right spot???

*I know I just need to go look but he lives about 45 minutes from here so I don't want to go and measure just to turn around and leave.

Your lines look close enough, top one should be a hair higher. I'd bet its a 20". Whats the model number on the plate on teh mounting bracket. It's gonna have the letter s, l, or xl as part of the model number. S=15, L=20, XL=25
