Is there a nautical name for a boat's transom height? *Mine I believe is a 25" shaft motor. *What years were they 20 inches. *They must have been cut real low! *Thanks Billy Mac *;D

My 84 is a 23.5 inch. It is a factory 20 inch with a plate put on to use a 25 inch motor. But they didnt make the plate tall enough, its about 1.5 inches short. It looks like that was as high as they could go and still bolt the motor to the original transom.
I will be putting my 20 inch Johnzuki on here in a few more days.

JUST when ya think ya know somebody!!... naw ... easy to see the benefits of bracket for some applications, but I'm not a ''GOTTA bracket or BUST'' guy ... for instance, iffn ol' Blue got tired of lookin' at that purdy lil' 21 sittin' out in his yard, I'd probably mosey on up and take 'er offn' his ol' DAWG hands ;) ... ;) ...

If anyone is interested J&H Marine sells a jacking plate which allows you to mount a 25" motor on a 20" transom. It is only $100. I am considering using this and getting a 25" prepower, plus I'll fill in the 5" to get more height in the stearn.

Randleman is handles real good and her speed aint to bad either. 30-32 with just me going with the tide and 27-28 against the tide, with 60 gals fuel. I have a 13.5 diameter with a 17" pitch and will turn 4800-4900 WOT. Checked the milage to and from Chincoteage (20 miles round trip) with 4 adults and 2 kids ( about 1100 pounds) and not able to trim ( found trim unit did not work this trip) I got around 2.2 MPG and 20 - 25 MPH.
All and all I am happy with it but like everybody else I would like to have a new one.

I heard that too, and from what I've seen they are. Switched up to a 14" x 17P prop and gained about 3 MPH but lost 500 RPM. Went back to the 13.5 x 17 I like to keep my RPM's up.

I think they were all 172 hp, they just put different HP numbers on the sides of em so they could sell to different people.

I bet a 14 x 15p prop would get you a little more speed and rpm. But the question is moot if you get a "Fast Strike".
Personally I don't think you will like the Johnson as well as that sweet ole Merc, from a "running" point of view. They are just not as "refined". But you will like the Johnson from the "seat of pants" point of view plenty.
