I am searching for my V. I thought I wanted a CC (with a hardtop) because that is what I'm used to, however, a cuddy might be an asset in some situations. How about some opinions on the pros and cons of each setup? I want to setup for fishing primarily. Thanks!!

I think it boils down to much the same decision Franco made when he moved to a warmer climate...Cuddy w/a top extends a cold season (I use mine 12 months)...CCs are GREAT warm weather fishers...

Good points. Is an enclosure available for a CC, something that wraps down and around a hardtop for weather protection but still allows access to the bow? Does anyone have any pictures of such? It seems like the cuddy's are easier to find than CC's.

That'd probably have to be a custom made item.
there were definately a heck of a lot more cuddy models made than CC. And even fewer dual consoles I think.

What CB says seems to at least hold true for the guys on this forum... Certainly not many duallys at all... :(

Makes sense since I see many more Cuddy's in my search. I'm 6'1", wondering how much room down below with the cabin?

I'm 6' 0" and I wouldn't want to spend a lot of time in that size cabin. For my like's, the V20 cabin is at best a storage area or a quick clothes changing/pee cabana for the ladies.
If I'm going to have a cabin boat, I want something I can at least sit up straight in without hitting my head. this is just my personal preference. Otherwise give me the fishing room of a center console.
Everything in boat design is a compromise (or a trade off if that term fits better) in one way or another. There is no such thing as a perfect boat for everyone.
You have to decide what will work best for your on the water pleasure. My wife isn't a big boating fan. So, the majority of my time on the water is geared towards fishing. Therefore center consoles or "open boats" as opposed to cabin models work best for me.

im only 5'9" and use the cuddy as storage. the wife has used it, as chumbo mentioned, to use the potty. the kids will lay down in it for a minute or two but as for normal sized humans. . . . forget it.

Well said! I'm going to stick with my search for a CC. I see so many that are cuddy it's making me question whether I should get one. When I think about what I want to use it for (fish meat in the freezer) I really know that I want the increased deck area of the CC. Thanks for helping me stay focused. Now to find that boat...... :D

where are you located?
you are aware that they are harder to find?
you are also aware that they are more expensive?
do you know that there isnt much storage?

I had 2 center consoles before i got the cuddy(19 mako & 21 hydrasport). I loved both , but then my daughter came along and we needed the dry storage for all of the baggage kids require. That was 17 years ago and we still have the cuddy. to me a cc is like a motorcycle, when the weather is right, the ain't nothin better, but the cuddy is like takin your mom's station wagon to the prom. It 's not as cool but plenty of room and comfort to get the job done. As i get older, i tend to go toward comfort. as far as fishing, the cuddy does great on trolling and bottom fishing, but casting on the flats is not so great. either one is a great choice.

I like the Cuddy much better than a CC. It's a much drier ride, lotza storage space and affords some cover from cold winds while at anchor.

I am a cuddy guy!! I store all kinds of things in there and all stays safe and dry!!
As for room, I think a cuddy has twice the dance floor for fishing then a CC does! In the cc i always have the cc in my back or the seat in the way or the cooler up front that is used for storerage in my way.
But what the CC offeres is acess to the bow when fighting a big fish who can't make up its mind!!
Nothing beats a full windsheild of a cuddy when it gets nasty! Everyone is dry not just the stinking driver!!
There is a thread here with a couple of pictures of a enclouser on a CC They look weird and they still offer nothing to the passanger.

Charlie the Tuna: *I'm in Virginia. *I'm not too worried about storage as it will be used primarily for fishing by myself or one other person. *Chesapeake Bay, Hatteras, and Eastern shore of VA is where I plan on using it. *I fish freshwater all year round and can "take" colder weather (dress right.) *I've been on the Bay in some pretty sorry weather and don't mind getting a little wet now and then. *Spray in the face when it's cold makes me feel alive!
Darn, Skool, don't tease me about the one that got away. *Let me know of any others you run up on. *I'll consider all conditions.
Thanks everyone, keep it comin'. *I'll find my boat yet. *I must have that flare of the V!!
MJ: darn it, now you got me thinkin again...

I like my cuddy, my personal opinion is that the CC is designed for total fishing, the cuddy can be used for family entertainment.
The cuddy offers storage especially if your CEO is like mine
and says get that fishing $hit outta here, I don't mind, cause I usually
have it where it doesn't belong.
The cuddy allows you to pull up to the local "watering holes" and safely lock up any expensive gear.
Sounds like Lewes is a bad area, but I was always taught that fences make good neighbors.
These are just my opinions, and the final choice is one of YOUR personal preference.

Fire,
Having owned both in many different brands, both designs have very good qualities.
If I were a young guy with no kids, I would have a CC.
I would also look at a dually, you get the bow fishing area, and the windshield.
Three kids and wife require me to have a cuddy.
This one is probably still available, they were asking $1250. *You could make this a real nice one witha little work.

also anchoring with a center console is much easier than a cuddy.....its gonna be either a console or a dually for me..i anchor way to much for a cuddy......you can always get a t-top with an enclosure for wind blockage.

I've had both over the years and I much prefer the cuddy. I can tell you that in a driving rainstorm you can fit 3 people in the Cuddy while it passes.
Anchoring in the cuddy isn';t bad because you can walk almost to the bow with the slider forward.
Fishing? Where do you fish on your boat. If you fish out of the back, this is a no-brainer, as the cuddy has a huge cockpit. PLenty of people catch more fish that I do, but not because they have a Center Console?
For the areas you are going to fish I'd reccomend the Cuddy. And if ya want, your more than welcome to slip over to the shore and spend an afternoon on mind. We can target some of them 18.5" flounder that VA will be famous for this year. ;D

Thanks everyone for the comments on the pros and cons. *Anchoring!!! *I didn't think of that. *I would like access to the bow and I may do some flyfishing out of it too.
Could someone explain the "sea-drive" setup as opposed to bracket? *Thanks for everyone's help.
Airslot: Thanks for the kind invite! I am going to take you up on that as soon as I can due to work. Maybe May. I would love to see how the cuddy fishes. I'll bring plenty of gas/bait $ ;)

Yup, we use my buddy's CC all year long, too ...and no doubt it can be dressed for...it's just a little easier w/a Cuddy...I found a 120 qt cooler that fits like a glove into the front hold in my cuddy...top of it's about 3-4" higher than the deck...w/the hatch-lid pushed forward and the windshield open, I've got full access to the bow in an instant and have spent MANY an hour casting rod and net from the top deck of my cuddy... ;D ...
I've seen a CC w/a hard-top that had a FULL ENCLOSURE from the windshield back to the rear of the top and from the sides of the top, down to the tops of the gunwales and it was very effective...zipper access forward and back...
So, Fire, it's gonna come down to a personal reference thing for ya ;) ...

Fire,
The contact info for that boat is somewhere in that post. GarageNC is the one who brought it to my attention, he lives close to it.
so you should PM him to see if its still around.
The motor was "suspect" according the the dealer selling it, it is a candidate for a bracket and a different motor.......perhaps a 1999 Merc 150?

I always thought a dually would offer the best compromise. There are not many of them around, and if you exclude those that need major work you are talking about a small group indeed.
That being said, I just spent a few days fishing in Franco's CC. That is a sweet boat and for where he is it is just about perfect.
That being said I would tell you my personal preference is to have a little more comfort. Thats right comfort, not for the kids or CEO but for me.
If you do a lot of running to diffrent spots fishing, have to make more than a ten minute run I get tired of a CC. Yea you can get the enclosures that snap down to the sides with wings and they will keep a lot off of you. But they are a pain in the arse to use when you are out.
With a walk around cuddy, a cuddy or even a dual console you can actually cruise or run and gun to your spots, make a long run to the fishing grounds your hitting and you will be able to be out of the wind, spray if nasty out and you will actually be able to have a conversation with you mates. Especially if you got a full transom or a quiet enough motor. In Old School I did that all the time, when I am on a CC doing the same runs, no one talks unless you are yelling into someones ear and even in 70 degree weather a 30-40 mph run can get chilly while you stand there and hold on.
They have there place and I do love being able to move all the way forward, but then again where I fished there was always a chop, when you stand on a elevated bow platform it was always a balancing act, that is why I love the CC's that don't have them, same floor depth all the way forward.
Each design has its merits for sure, but for me with 95% fishing, 5% family stuff the cuddy gave me everything I needed and let me do it comfortably. I like that word comfort. JMHO

Willy: thank you for sharing your experience with the different setups, I really appreciate it. One reason I want the boat is to fish with my Dad who is 67 now. So more comfort for him is a plus. He still runs 5 miles most days and a part of him is still at sea in the CG. He always tells me that try docking a 378' high endurance cutter if I think this boat is tough to dock in a wind. :o He's tough as nails but I'd like more comfort for him nonetheless.
Kajun: I know, it's a good deal isn't it?! I just want to make the right choice for my uses. I'm thinking very seriously about making the trip! thanks for your input.
Randleman: 150 Merc, hhmmmm, is it a carb motor?
What is yall's opinion on what that boat would need to be reliable? (besides newer power) I did see a nice one awhile back with a permanent softtop/rocket launchers. Canvas sides, I'm sure could be fitted. What are we talkin with bracket and an outboard upgrade $ wise?
Thanks to all for the valuable input.

The Merc is a carb motor w/ the oil injection removed. Runs like a top. It is going on ebay in the next week or so, but I can wait another week til you find direction.
As for brackets, 800 new, 400 used?
If I remember correctly there was a soft spot in the floor of that dually but the transom was good, check w/ garagenc, he has seen it in person.
Look at By Grace Alone's gallery for an idea of what you would have to do to make the switch.

Randleman: *150 Merc, hhmmmm, is it a carb motor? *
What is yall's opinion on what that boat would need to be reliable? *(besides newer power) *I did see a nice one awhile back with a permanent softtop/rocket launchers. *Canvas sides, I'm sure could be fitted. *What are we talkin with bracket and an outboard upgrade $ wise?
Thanks to all for the valuable input. *
The Merc is a carb motor w/ the oil injection removed. Runs like a top. It is going on ebay in the next week or so, but I can wait another week til you find direction.
As for brackets, 800 new, 400 used?

hey fire
That boat is still available, you may get it for less now since it's been sitting there. This summer it will have been sitting there for a year now. There are other pics of that boat on this site, I took them and sent them to Randleman.
Let me know if you want me to check anything for you.

Hey Fire, let me wade in, If I still lived in Va Beach, I would still have my Cuddy, but it would have a bracket and a 4 stroke in stead of a i/o. I had a full enclosure that kept my a$$ warm and dry while chasing stripers along the CBBT. Here I fish in skinny water and run offshore too! If I couldhave found a V20 CC here with a full transom I might have bought it instead of my new boat. I know this doesn't help at all. Just buy a V20 and you'll be hooked

With your Dad in mind I say definitely get the cuddy. It'll be much more comfortable than either a cc or dually.

Ya know, comfort comes in different levels...yeah, there's more protection in a cuddy, but the crew rides farther AFT in a CC for a smoother ride(which may have lead to the duallie)...

MJ: darn it, now you got me thinkin again...Those are my fishing grounds around the CBBT and off Va Beach. I have a cc which I do have a bimini top with sides and a front which has a zipper door. Its nice for real cold days trolling but it does limit you to fishing from the back of the boat which works. If your not trolling the CBBT your either floating or anchord which both are fine to fish from the rear of the boat. The biggest problem is night and glare. I do not fish that much in the winter months but when I do I'm able to choose my days because I'm self emp. Good luck with what ever you decide.

Thanks for everyone's comments. I'm leaning towards the DC with bimini and enclosure. Easy access to the bow is a plus and would be fairly good in weather. If I can get away for half a day from work, I'll look at some/probably drag one home! (then the work begins......... :o )
The feedback is much appreciated.

if your going offshore, the cuddy wins hands down, i used to fish a 233 Formula cuddy, we ran 6 lines( sometimes 8 on a calm day) and two teasers off the riggers( big riggers for a 23), even though the boat was an I/O we still had plenty of room for three guys to handle the lines and drink, i mean fish. I fished a 23( actually bigger than the Formula) SeaCraft center console later in the year, it was rough so no one got in front of the console, we didn't have near the room that the Formula gave us, we had a mess handling the lines. If it is flat or spread out waves on a regular basis( like in Fl), you can take advantage of the center consoles room, but if its rough, or cold and short chop( form here up the coast), everone ends up behind the console and in the way of the capt.

IMO the CC ride a ton better then the cuddy!! I love my cuddy , But If I had know what I know now a DC would be the way to go!!
Have some storage, comfort ride of a CC, and all the fishing area.
But finding a good one is going to be the hard part??
Good Luck!

Hello Everyone- I am brand new here & I was refered here from another forum, and it looks like maybe this is where I should post my questions??
I am planning to go look at a 1986 Wellcraft 23 Walkaround cuddy, and was looking for some input on the quality or dislikes / problems with these boats. I am not sure if it is the Coastal or Sportsman Model. It has a 200 O/B on it. Were softening decks and transoms an issue with these? What's the difference in the "Coastal" and "Sportsman"? Couldn't seem to find a classic wellcraft site or anything like that. I am stepping slightly "up" from a smaller CC boat.
Any Insight??
Thanks.
