View Full Version : The Arrival

TunaHead

I got a phone call from the boat hauler last night. My V-20 was traveling through Wyoming on it's way west. It should arrive here in Northen CA this evening. The hauler says it needs a good going over. It may not be the "ready to splash" boat I was looking for but by god it's MINE!!!!

I'll update with pictures tonight.

Not sure about what teh hauler said. That boat looked to be in excellent shape in all the pictures. You did Good Tuna on buying that V.
If you had a good hauler, he would be pulling over every few hundred miles and emailing you Pics. that you could forward to us. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :P

Yes sir. Pictures will be priority #2. Priority #1 is getting a cosmopolitan into the wife cuz she's still unhappy about this whole deal and now it'll be parked in the driveway.

That may be a two cosmo night Tuna, trust me I have experience with these things :-/

And if she walks out to the boat and looks in and see's a little gift wrapped box sitting on the helm you might even get lucky ;)

Willy, you are a genius. I car pooled with her this morning so now I just gotta sneak out of work in time to get her something.

I suppose an Avet LX 2 speed reel would be the wrong direction to go for a gift though...

He trusted his GPS for driving instructions. Apparently the most direct route is not the same as the shortest drive time. He's somewhere in the mountains that separate the coast from the central valley area of the state.

That can't be good for gas mileage.

The good the bad and the ugly...

The good news is that the hull/transom are sound. The Yamaha 150 V6 runs well and started up quickly and the trim works.

The bad news is that the boat has been neglected and in addition shows alot of the usual age related problems that come with a 20 year old salt water exposed craft. I didn't post yesterday cuz I spent all my spare time searching through the archives and reviewing the gallery photos (esp the before and after pics).

1) I want to replace the rod boxes (actually there is only one in there now). Looks like I can get those from Flounder Pounder without putting too big a bite on the budget. Any other good marine surplus dealers you can recommend?

2) The deck is solid but the hatch over the gas tank is soft. Any ideas? I opened the access hatch and the tank is metal. I can see crud accumulated on top of the tank. Any way to know if this is in good shape without pulling it out?

3) Bilge, livewell and raw water washdown pumps are not working. Neither are the running lights. I suspect this is a power issue and not that every one of these items is shot. It'll just take a little time to sort out.

4) The boat has the usual swiss cheese problems on the dash and gunwales that I see in a lot of the "before" pictures in the gallery. Whats the best material for filling these?

Overall I am very pleased. I've got the boat I wanted!

By the way... her name is Slainte (pronounced slawntcha) It's a gaelic drinking toast that's the equivalent of "Cheers".

Hey Tuna use starboard on the cover you'll never need to maintain again. Alot guys use on here its pricey but low maintanence.

On the fuel tank you can go a few ways, one drain into 55 gallon drum, and put in fresh fuel, get a local recommendation for your area about a tank cleaning agent and put it in with a few gallons of fresh gas hook that bad boy up and take it for an extended ride on the trailer stopping and going so the cleaner get sloshed around and drain again into separate container.
If it is real cruddy what I would do is find your local tank cleaner facility and pay them to give it a full cleaning, they will drain, use special solution under pressure and clean, drain again and filter your old gas and put back in. Buy a few fuel filters and be prepared to change them for the first few times you take it out.
Electrcal wise it sounds like a follow that line time, trace the runs, label them with marked tape pull all fuses and inspect, often it is in line fuses that get you. They are not very moisture resistant. Most accessories go to a common ground connection block under the console and often it is the ground wire that is corroded or disconnected and causing a problem. I hate wiring, always was a pain in the arse to me.
There is a good how to post concerning doing the tank covers over on this site, fellow did a nice job. Did not look to bad for a do it yourselfer and a good first fiberglass project to do. It is removed and open and easy to see.

03-23-2007, 03:19 PM
1. Rod boxes, FP is the place to go, so you good there.

2. That is a problem that all have! It has been fixed here many times and there is a couple of threads about it, Easy fix!

Gas tank can be pressure tested in place, But I have never done it, again not hard, unless it leaks, then we have done that here also! Harder fix buy very do able !!

3. Sounds like you are going to do what we have all done, REWIRE! You can do it, but just have to go slow, and tag everything as you go.

4 Dash can be replaced with 1/4 starboard, in most cases you can go to your local mariner (I Did) and they will let you go to there scrap pile, I got enough for my dash for $10.

As for small screw or bolt holes, I used Formula 27, filled every thing nice!

Sounds like you have some work ahead of you, but its all perrty stright forward!!
I have had my boat since 1998, and there has not been one year that I have not fixed something!! Some cause i needed to, and stuff that I just wanted to do.

Good Luck, start with one project at a time, you will have the boat a long time! Enjoy it!! What you don't fix this year will be there next year!

OK...went back and looked at pics...remove all gauges, wiring to fuse-box and old plastic dash...dispatch all to dumpster quickly...

DECIDE what and all gauges, gang switches, etc you want to put IN your new dash...lay 'em out on a towel or somethin' in the general way ya wannem in the boat...easy to change mind in this stage...

take jig-saw and REMOVE all fiberglass that WAS behind ol' black plastic, LEAVING a 3'4" lip all around perimeter, to which you will attach new dash material...

Some guys have had GREAT results from BACK-painting plexiglass and installing gauges, etc...others have used Starboard...you leanin' one way or another?...

Reel, I spent some time alone with her tonight. *The V20 that is. *I need to rant a little. *Here as nearly as I can recall is my exact phone phone conversation with "Mark" the former owner...

Mark: The previous owner crossed the batteries and fried out the electronics. *I am an electrician and have installed 2 new wiring harnesses.
Me: Oooohh Aaaaahhh!!!!
Mark: Yup, Everything is good to go....
Me: Oooohh Aaaaahhh!!!

What I find is the biggest birds nest of crap mismatched plastic coated copper I've ever seen. *Oh... I discovered why the pumps don't work. *The wires to them have been cut. *(A small detail commonly over looked even by competent electricians) Hooked up the raw water washdown pump directly to the battery and she spins like a top.

You advice is well taken. *All of the wiring will be replaced. *What the hell... this way if I see smoke when I turn on the bilge pump I have no one to blame but myself. *My goal for now is to make her safe and sea worthy for this season. *Next winter she'll be put in the garage and the real work starts.

Don't get me wrong. *I still love the boat. *Just blame myself for being misled. *Every problem I have found is fixable.

Tuna,

It'll be okay. *I experienced something very similar when I bought my V. *I traveled all the way from DC down to where Franco lives in FL to pick her up. *I bought her off of Ebay. *Talked to the owner, everything sounded great. *I had to do the whole trip in like two days, so timing was tight. *After driving for Lord knows how long, I get there and the tires on the trailer are cracked along the sidewalls even though I was assured everything was "good to go" for the long trip. *The trailer lights were fried too. *The boat was advertised as an 88, but the paperwork showed 86. *The list goes on and on (and it got longer after I got her home and inspected her more closely). *Well, after traveling all that way, I wasn't about to come home empty handed, so I bought it anyway. *At the end of the day, I'm glad I did. *I've done a bit of work to her and there's much more to do. *But as the guys have said before, this is a labor of love. *It's not an investment, it's a hobby. *It's gonna cost you more than you ever could have guessed. *BUT (and I'm still waiting for this part myself, but I trust the testimony of the others on this list) it's all worth it when you're out on the water on your very own V20. *

You'll be okay buddy. *Take a deep breath, investigate, make your list, and get to work... *

Hang in there. ;)

I suspect I was more fortunate than most. My V 20 was in good shape when I bought her. I bought her from a guy down the street, so I was able to look her over good and I was able to sea trial my boat on a rough day before I bought her. The only thing that I had to fix was the hatch over the gas tank. Otherwise I've been running her just as I bought her. I've made a few minor mods but she is for the most part just like I bought her. The down side? I bet I paid more than you did to get her. Like been said this is a hobby and it's gonna cost something. Pay now or pay later, either way you'll pay. The key is you got a great boat and your wife hasn't thrown you out. Now the fun begins!!!
Congrats and enjoy

willy

Tuna its standard crapola you run into when you buy anything used. Distance just adds to the questions. Plus your opinion of what is OK or acceptable can be completly different from the guy you are buying it from. Some people have no real pride in what they own, I've found for my purchases over the years that one of the key things I look for is the fellow who is torn about even selling her because he really loves the boat or is so proud of his work/maintenance of her.
I'm 52 years old and I just counted that I have had nine boats over the years, all used, and each one had one or more major issue, or a combination of major and minors.
But I enjoyed working on each, learned something from them all and in the end would not have really changed much.
BGrace is right on the money with his comments, his experience common.
Take stock in what you have, most times its best to lay the boat out in immediate must do's, for safety of you and yours, reliabilty on the water and pure functionality to pursue your interests.
Then lay out some improvements you need or want to make, usually these are some comfort items and cosmetic improvements.
If your hull is solid, floors and transom good you are ahead of the game. Wiring from the factory was not very good on these Wellcrafts to begin with and twenty some years of fiddiling and repairing and adding equipment by various "experts" usually results in a conditon that looks like a bowl of spaghetti.
You'll sort it out and you will repair it to the level that makes you happy and in the end you will be cruising the left coast with those great sunsets, maybe with the wife and a couple of cosmos or a couple of rods trolling out the back. Either way smile and enjoy the ride.

Just throw it away!! But wait till I am there to catch it!! ;D

I bought my boat for $1800, no outdrive, $1500 to find one and have rebuilt.

Year 2, outdrive frozen solid cause the guy that rebuilt it did not put a new yok and it wore the seal and allowed water in, I to lazy did not change lower unit iol in the fall, so rusted soild, another $600
Same season, The head rotted thur and had to be replaced, Bought used motor for patrs took head and replaced mine.

Year 3, started season putting new manifold and riser, $900, then after 2 weeks the oil pan rotted thur, Pulled motor and swaped pan's with the parts motor.
2 weeks later the engin coupler blows and have to remove the engin again $300
Then the gimble bracket breaks and cost me $600 more.

Year 4, head gasket went, oil and water mixing all season, I know cared!! Just kept adding oil and made it thur another season.

Year 5, pulled motor converted to bracket, added outboard,

After that I had 3 years no problmes!! ;D Then last season blew the motor. Well that was it I had no money and was selling out!
But everyone here helped me get another motor!! ;D ;D

But thats a huge story of its own!!

And this was a short version!! i figure I have a 1975 (32 year old) boat that has cost me some $14,000 that I will never see again, and I have used my boat every year, during all the problems!

The problems will never end, but what you learn is priceless!! In the end you will have a boat that you no every bolt, wire, crack, hicup, and you will be a beter person for it!!

Tuna,

I had a similar problem buying a boat based on someones opinion of sound with no problems. Needed to replace transom, stringers, floor, and a ton of hull chips, and mechanics were not trustworthy to go in the ocean. I made the decision that the investment into the hull was too much. Sold the parts of the boat so I broke even or close. Found another v20 and I'm working the kinks out of that one right now, but am happy I went this route. Time for me is too tight, I want to fish in my V!!! I wish you luck

Thanks guys. *Really, I'm already in love with this boat. *Took her to the car wash today and powerwashed all the road grime and scent of the former owner. *Afterwards I drove her over to my local tackle store and showed her off to the guys who run the place.

Tomorrow light rain is predicted. *I just went out, put the boat cover on and whispered nice things into her scuppers. *Tuesday the kicker and bracket get mounted and the main engine gets a thorough going over.

The other problems... well I just blame it all on you guys. *It YOUR FAULT for getting me all excited about V's in the first place *;)

I create a gallery a post pics of the progress.

The guy I bought my V from was nearly bawling when I drove away. ;D

Willy.....I am thinking of trying my hand at some wiring....nothing major but wanting to clean up everything behind the helm. Sticking the new horn on got me one that idea......my wife says I'm anal retentive (I hesitate to use that expression on this board :) ) and I suppose she's right. I'll be sure to have the camera handy when I get around to it. Right now I just want to splash down and go fishing!!!!!
