View Full Version : Went For A Ride

Saturday my family and I took the new to us V-20 out for a little ride. The ocean was slick and we saw probably 50 bottle nose dolphins chasing bait and a sea turtle.

We also caught and released some small black bass. (The wife said she was going out for dinner, throw em back.)

I am very pleased with my new boat.

We stopped at Capt. Pete's for a soda.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r222/randlemanboater/101_0064-4.jpg

Then we rode all the way around Holden Beach, left out of Lockwood's Folly Inlet and came back in Shalotte Inlet. Like I said, the ocean was slick.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r222/randlemanboater/101_0066-4.jpg

About a mile off of the beach.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r222/randlemanboater/101_0067-4.jpg

A small sea turtle was sunning.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r222/randlemanboater/101_0073-4.jpg

We tried to take pics of the dolphins, but all we got was the splash after they went back down.

Who says the cabin on a V-20 won't sleep 3?

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r222/randlemanboater/101_0085-2.jpg

They slept for an hour.

Later we ran about 4 miles out and caught and released about 20 black bass just for fun.

I bet the JOHNZUKI on the V gets some good milage. When I ran mine(before I seen the transom isuues), the 1.6 SEA-DRIVE GULPED fuel to the tune of around 12 GPH @ 3800 RPM's :o.

I ran about 40 miles total and I used about 7 gal. ;D

Top speed was 35 mph with 25 gal gas, 2 adults, 3 kids, and a big lunch box on board, but I was turning about 400 rpm too many, looks like I could use a 20 pitch prop. (Assuming this tach is right) But with this prop the V shoots out of the hole.

Looks like a great day Randle, enjoy the little ones as long as you can.

MJ, I know what you mean, I can barely sit in my cuddy to
make repairs and stow gear.
Then again, maybe if I clean out some of the $hit I got in there...

The newer hulls have bigger cuddy's than the older ones. My V-21 has more head room and leg room.

It was really a great time. The CEO liked the new boat, she was even asking me how much a new paint job would cost and told me to get a new trailer cause the one with holes in the fenders is ugly.

I left the house on Friday with a fairly short "todo" list, by the time I drove home Sunday the list was a whole page again.

Cushions for the cabin, in line scuppers, fat boy helm seat, etc.....

I would reccomend having your current prop repitched. I've had excellent luck with having props repitched to higher pitchs(not so good of luck with decreasing though). Or you could have them put some cup in the blade, but ALUMINUM(ESPESCIALLY SUZUKI'S) tends to not hold a cup for long.

I've had my fair share of prop work done in my day, I like fishing the flats in 2' of water or less.

I priced some SS props and some 4 blade aluminuminum today, I wont be buying a new SS, thats fer sher.

The kid at the parts counter seemed to talk a good game, but he suggested that if I go to more pitch that I decrease the diameter of the prop, seems to me, that would defeat the purpose.

It seems from what I can find that you have to use a prop specific to a Johnson/Suzuki 4 stroke even specific down to 60 hp to 140 hp.. *It has 15 splines and it looks to be slightly less than 4 inches accross at the front of the prop (not the end where the exhaust comes out, it is about 4 1/4 ")

The JOHNZUKI uses a V4 gearcase style prop(4" not the 4.5" V6), but I guess it uses a V6 prop shaft. Have you tryed a prop shop yet? I know these guys aint local to you, but they have done me right through the years, and are reasonable.

http://www.acbprop.com/

There also GENERAL PROPELLER down here, they do most of the rebuilds for most major shops(but ADMIRAL does more rebuilding, and repitching).

http://www.gpcprop.com/

ON EDIT: I looked up the 140 in my MICHIGAN WHEEL catalog and you can use a B series XHS prop with a 126 adapter and have a wide array of different props to choose from.

All I've done so far is stop at a dealer and ask prices for ones that fit.

I think I will keep the one I have like it is as a spare and to use when the kids start waterskiing.

Since this one works ok, I am in no rush.

Speaking from personal experience here, SUZUKI props SUCK!!!! Go with an aftermarket MICHIGAN WHEEL, there much more reasonably priced and made from much better materials.

We made it down and back safe and sound.

The weather was not the best, but not bad for April. Monday it was cold and cloudy so I put the V in the water and went to work replacing the keel rollers and many rusted bolts holding on the bunks.

I suggest to anyone that has to replace this stuff on a saltwater used trailer, spend 50 bucks and get a cheep "saws all", it made easy work of getting the old stuff off.

Tuesday was sunny and windless (although still chilly) in the morning so we went fishing. We caught a boatload of Black Sea Bass, most were 11 "s, the new law says they have to be 12 "s to keep. We did get enough for a meal.

Calm waters on the way out.

Summer with a keeper!

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r222/randlemanboater/101_0075-1.jpg

By the afternoon the wind picked up and the seas built to around 3' with an occasional 4'er thrown in for fun but the V handled it great.

Wednesday it rained so we went to the Fort Fisher Aquarium via the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r222/randlemanboater/101_0079-2.jpg

Then we had birthday cake for the old man.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r222/randlemanboater/101_0083-2.jpg

Thursday it was 80 and sunny but the wind was blowing 20 -30 kts. We went to the beach for an hour but quickly tired of the constant sandblast.

Then it was pack it up and ride back home.

Looks safe to me...ya got a bottle of extinguishing agent (agua) right there within arms reach! *Plus I see someone has a fire/rescue shirt on.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

I was able to put out the fire with one breath, and I didn't even need oxygen afterward.

Fire, this is whats on my shirt.

My wife came up with a "Hero's" theme summer bible school for our church the year after 9-11. Someone found these shirts and we got them for all the leaders/teachers.

Randle: OK, I get it...nice to think of the brothers up North with the shirts. A good cause too. There was a funeral here for a local Deputy LODD and an officer from NY showed up to pay his respects. It seems they are doing this as a gesture of thanks for the support they got from all over the country after 9-11. Pretty classy in my book.

I'm glad the "fire" on the cake didn't get out of control!
