after reading the first paragraph , you beat me to the punch ..................
I've also had this other thought...Taking the drill press and a 4" hole saw and cutting a recess into the side just enough to clear the chain pipe. If I took the 4" saw and notched the edge of the pulpit
Air this sure beats movin the rope and like randle says it will look cool ( extra custom)....
I wish you were alil closer to me I'd help ya

But will it work, using a hole saw in a press to drill 1/3 of a hole? Your valued opinion here.... ;)?

I would use a jig saw with a fine blade,
If you use a hole saw you would have to clamp a another board along side it and drill as if it were one piece of wood. and drill slow.
if ya need me u can call my cell.

The reason I said to use a hole saw is that with Starboard when you use the Jig saw it heats up, you have to move fast, I have got the cut done and had to go do it again, it melts its self back toghter.
It can be done but with such a thick piece you might have to do it 2 or 3 times to get it to break free.
Use a drum sander or dremel to smooth when done.

Jig saw should be able to do the job.

You will be fine what ever you do!! Just going to have to sand it smooth when done!
