View Full Version : Ummm, that not the gas tank
My buddy just got a beatiful 98 19proLine center counsil.
Why filling it up this morning he proceeded to put $80.00 worth of gas in his rod holder instead of his gas tank!!! :oFilled his entire hull with over 20 something gallons of gas. He gan a house for a few hours threw the hull to try and clean it out.
Besides removing the gas, is there any other things he should be worried about? Or things he should do to treat the gas stuck in the hull?
He wanted me to ask you guys your advise. I am still laughing @ the site of him filling up in a rod holder. wish I could of been there ;D

Put some water and boat soap in the bilge and drive around some to wash the residue down in the bilge. If not the fuel residue could attack the plastic through hulls and bilge pump.

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :o :o :o :o :o :o
Put the plug in the boat and turn the hose on to the level he's comfortable with. It may have already damaged any flotation foam but at least it'll be reasonablly clean.

someone does this every year!!!!!!!!!!!
Doesn't any one have a gas cap?? Take off cap fill gas?? Is there something wrong with me or what?
How do you fill a rod holder??
Ant wat a good rinise is first, gas will evaprate, but the fumes is what cause the BOOM!!
I would open all hatches and lay a fan over one end of the boat blowing right in one hole to force all fumes out!
Leave over night should be fine!!
Really I want you to ask him, Does he have a gas cap? Did he take the gas cap off? or did he just fill a hole for the heck of it??
I really want to know why people do this?

Yeah, I think MJ has the right idea. Use a fan and wait for it to evaporate. Then wash her down with soap and water. actually, you could probably do both at the same time. The gas will evaporate whether or not you add water for washing.
I'm not sure I would be taking it for a spin even with water in it. The ignition or any other switches could cause her to blow.
Oh yeah, put up a no smoking sign around the boat :P

y'know i have always said any schmuck with 10 grand can buy a boat.
not a dam one knows how to use it though.
this is why i dont untie my boat on the weekends.
the italian fleet and the israeli navy are all out there gassing up their rod holders.
congratulate your friend for me on his acceptance into the fleet and tell him to keep boating on the weekends with the rest of them.
From the sounds of it I can see how you would chalk him up as a schmuck, weekend warrior.
But he is actually one of the saltiest guys I know. his been on the water his whole life and a top knotch fisherman.
Thats what makes it so funny... ;)

My bet is, he took the gas-cap off, it's close to the rod-holder,distracted, put the gas in the rod-holder...none of us is above makin' a mistake, but I hope I never do that one...
I would mix up a bucket w/ lots of detergent and water and pour it into the same rod-holder ...maybe even add some grease-cutter...that way it'll go to same area as gas went...then FLUSH w/ LOTS of water down the same rod-holder, then dry out w/fan over few days ;) ...

The smell of the fuel will hang around for a long time. I've been on a boat that had a fuel tank leak 40 gallons into the blige and it took that guy forever to get the odor down to where you could go into his cuddy for any amount of time. While it stinks I've been told that it is not explosive and the odor can be removed or lessened with a good washing using white vinegar and hot water.
;D ;D Well he told me to thank you all for the advise. He did ondo the gas cap, then a guy came over to as for dirtections and distracted him yadi yadi yadi ;D I looked @ the hull, and the gas cap and rod holder are directly next to each other and both trimed in chrome so, I dont know it is still hilliarious ;D ;D
If you are in Narrigansett Bay this weekend, please do not flick any cigirates @ a 19ft Red ProLine with Red T-top ;D ;D

by the way harbour, and i guess you could call this a personal attack, how did you get the smell out when you filled up your rod holder?
(just a hunch).
LOL ;D Hisw boats still floating, and actually doesn't smell to bad (probably covered up by all the fish guts that went in the well ;D ;D) I do agree, there are WAY to many kooks out on the weekends with either no concepts of the rules or curtisy or just plann dumb. I was still the 1st boat/truck @ the ramp on Sat. and only had to wait for one other guy to pull out ( that sounds wierd :o) so timing is everything.
I am out tommorow AM and things should be back to normal... Nice and Quite. ;D Thanks again!!
