Tachs are listed as working on 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 pole outboards. Not to sould like a dumba$$, but what is this exactly relating to and how do I determine How many poles on my outboard? (88' 175)

I guess sounding like a dumba$$ is a given now :(

The "poles" refer to how many poles in the stator for generating current. You have to set this so that the tach knows how many "pulses" equal a revolution of the flywheel. I have no idea how many poles your motor has, but Schools will I'm certain ;D

Flounder most tachs come with cross reference charts as to which setting to put them on.
You need to know the make, model, year and sometimes more exact info about the motor.
Several weeks ago I bought a tach and Daddy liked it so he bought the same type from the same place.
Come to find out someone had robbed two pages of instructions from mine and one page from daddys. Talk about luck, between the two of tachs we had complete info on the two different motors.
Both of ours had to be set at 8 pole if I'm not mistaken.
I've got an "84 150hp Evinrude.

My mistake flounder I just found the instructions and we have them on 6 pole.
The teleflex tach instructions reads "all Johnson Evinrude 2 stroke 3 cylinder & V engines are to connect to 6 pole" and it lists others for their connections.
So all of these have 12 poles.
