FUEL TANK HELP

Danm, As stated before, I just bought an 84 V20 that's in good shape. I'm in the driveway right now pulling cables on it (i'm putting a 150 yami off my mako on it) and found a fuel line under the console that has an external tank fitting on the end. STOMPED back to the stransom and found the main line had been cut. I'm guessing a fuel tank is in my near future. I need some help on finding one. 6o gallon. when I pull the deck plate up, if it looks like there's room, I'll go bigger. Thanks in advance for any help.

There wont be any additional room .... to go larger than the stock 60 gal tank. The tanks are a very close fit to the stringers and cross-pieces.

I replaced my fuel tank in my 84V20cuddy.. took the old one to a aluminum fabrication place. They made there measurements and made me a new aluminum 60 gal for i think around $300. Good Luck... Z

Pulled my tank. It was the original from 85. Needs a clean-up and good protectant. Any suggestions on this. Zinc Chromate?

In any case, I will be posting a detailed drawing of the 60 Gallon Belly tank for all to use. I think it would be a good idea for everyone who pulls a tank to make a drawing and take pics. Before long we'll have some great info to make things easy for others.

If this already exists somewhere, I would love to know where it is.

How did you pull the tank, all foamed in and looks like a tight fit. What ya do. Crow bar it out. I'll be doing one in teh near future as well I think. :-/

First find something wide, sharp and stiif. Use a hammer to drive it in the foam around the top of the tank and pop the foam out around the top to give clearance for tank removal and the next step. Then I took a crowbar and jammed it in the foam right next to the gas tank down to the hull. Don't use a hammer for this. Then move it back and forth. The object is to break the foam seal all the way around the tank. I figured why try to take the foam out first when it's the tank I want. Then I drove to my boat yard and tied a line around the fuel fill, hooked it to the boat lift and gently applied the lift a little bit at a time. Tank comes right out. If there is fuel in the tank(like mine), set it on the ground after moving your boat. Then tie to the fitting on the opposite side and lift the tank up with a 5 gallon bucket underneath. Have several handy and a bud to help with this. Transfer the gas to a portable you use for your lawn mower or whatevuh. Ta- dah. yer done. not a bad job at all using this technique. I got a lot of common sense, but I don't balance my checkbook and I spell like ****.

My tank was in excellent shape. I'll prime with zinc chromate(unless I hear otherwise) and seal it back in with foam. The foam worked well for this tank. It was the original, so I'll go with foam again. You'll find a lenght of pvc under the tank you prolly need to replace. Hope this helps. WhatKnot out.

HAMMER, I know exactly what you are thinking at this point,
my tank is halfway under the floor
and I guess I will have to cut part of the floor out.

I have to do some cleanout work on my fuel tank,
so I hope I don't have to pull it,
it will be an interesting job if we have to pull our tanks,
but maybe between the two of us we can come up with a way to do it without cutting the floor.

I was thinking maybe some acetone in a sprayer
to eat away at the foam,
but what will that do to the fiberglass?

I dont like the tank set up at all for this year, half under the floor deal. How stupid. >:(
I'm guessing the tank is bad in my project V because I found a portable 5 gallon tank hooked up.

Sorry to hear about your tanks being under the deck. That blows goats. Who thought that was a good idea? I guess I got lucky. I didn't know anything about these boats. And the reason (other than price), for me bying this hull is because my 20 mako has a gas tank leak and a very low transom. Not good for the sometimes brutaly rough waters around Savannah. Good luck with the skillsaw.
