Sorry it took so long to put this up, but its a long report *;D

In an effort to take up some of Airslot's slack, me and 10 other guys headed to the coast last Wednesday evening to aid in the "natural selection process" in the stiper population that is heading down the coast. *

Wednesday December 13th

Knocked off work around 4:15pm. *Worked tirelessly all day Wednesday making sure everything on my checklist was packed and ready. *Toothbrush - check, deodorant - check, rods n reels - check, etc. etc. *Thank God for preparation. *I didn't forget a thing, which is quite incredible for me. *8) *

We hit the road around 6:30 and pointed the full-sized doge east. *My wife and I only have one vehicle right now, so my friend Snead volunteered to pull the V-21 for me. *Nice guy, that Snead...also a striper virgin, but a nice guy nonetheless.

Anyway, we arrived in Nags Head around midnight. *As soon as we arrive the plan was to lay down the law on a couple of cold beers while preparing the boat for the morning. *Remember guys, preparation is the key. * ;)

So, we get the full enclosure on and pack everything into the boat for morning. *Fairly uneventful. *Alot of the other guys had already hit the sack - bunch of light weights.

So, I get everything done and everybody hits the sack. *I wasn't quite ready so I stayed up for about another hour until 2-ish. *During that time while I was outside I decided to look at the stars. *Some of the other guys had already mentioned seeing shooting stars so I thought I'd try to see one.....well, I didn't see one. *I saw 25 + *!! *I stopped counting at 25 and must have saw 4 or 5 more after that before turning in! *This detail is important, as you will see later in this story.

Was seeing 2 - 3 per minute with a few "earth grazers" mixed in. *Very cool *8) *After that, I hit the hay too.

Thursday, December 14th

Awoke around 6-ish. *Quick shower and brush my chops and walk outside. *In a word - FOG. *Dang fog, I hate it! *But, there was NO wind, which was very good. *So we decide not to get in any hurry and head off for some breakfast. *A little eggs, some sausage and gravy and all set. *Back to the room to purge the bowels and by 8 am we're heading to the ramp - stille foggy.

At the ramp we get the boats in and started making our way out. *Visibility was not terrible but not good. *I think it was 1/4 mile - coulda been worse. *We know there's a shortcut to the inlet, but not having it marked and no boats to follow out we had to take the long way.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/stinkery/S2010001-1.jpg?t=1166453229
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/stinkery/S2010002-1.jpg?t=1166453388
Long story short, my buddy in his 19ft Grady White Tournament named "Runnin Rock Fish" makes a wrong turn and puts his boat up on a flat *snicker* *;D. *He trims it up and is shooting sand about 10ft in the air and we were pretty much rolling in the floor. *So he makes it off the bar and gets back in line. *At this point I'm leading. *Well, yours truly misses the turn for the inlet and we are heading for Pirates Cove *:o *But only for a couple hundred yards........before I put the SS Blue Runner up on a bar myself *>:( *Payback time, Joey and company in the Grady are now rolling in the floor laughing at me - guess we got what we deserved. *It was a very soft grounding, mainly the skeg, so we trimmed it up and made it off in no time flat and got back on track.

We make it out to the bridge at the inlet. *The marker bouys are not marked on any of our Garmin GPS units. *Strange. *I thought they were? *So we have a fair amount of trouble finding the first one in the thick fog. *Then we found the second one. *Luckily, the inlet looked like a bathtub (what we could see of it). *Smooth, slick calm. *I stood in the cuddy with the hatch slid forward in order to find the markers. *We found them all and made it out. *

Again, the ocean is smooth, slick and greasy calm. *So we decide to head north. *We headed north and headed north some more. *Making about 30 mph and 3700 RPM's we ended up 40 miles north and hadn't seen another boat, any birds - nothing. *

A pic of the exited crew *::). *In the pic, we are doing 30 mph but it was so calm it was almost like riding in a car!

My main man Corey on the right, Robin the bro-in-law on left. *I don't know where Snead is?

I told the other guys that my limit would be 40 miles one-way and my buddy in the Grady also has a 150 with 62 gallons of gas so we stopped there and put the lines in around 10:30am. *The other boat with us, Kencraft Challenger 206 named "Two Moons" carries 90 gallons of gas with a fuel inject 200hp Evinrude, so they have a little more range than us.

Had 3 knockdowns before noon and lost all 3 *>:( *Couldn't figure out what we were doing wrong? *Finally, we got one in the boat. *17.4 lbs. *Nice! *My brother-in-law Robin loses his linesider virginity!
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/stinkery/S2010004-1.jpg?t=1166454282
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/stinkery/S2010003-1.jpg?t=1166454900
The next 3 knockdowns turn up to be big bluefish. *We gave them a quick release boatside and no pix, sorry. *I don't like to bring them in the boat. *They are so darn fiesty its not a good idea IMO to bring them inside the boat with those treble hooks flopping everywhere.

Runnin Rock Fish managed 1 keeper as well and Two Moons lucky tail managed 6 somehow *::).

A shot of Two Moons:

Robins gesture of "#1" in the pic tells it all - we only caught one on Thursday. *

Captain, proudly displays the catch:
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/stinkery/S2010010-2.jpg?t=1166455183

On the way back in around 5pm we fell in behind the sporties and were able to mark the shortcut for the next morning.

Friday December 15

A new day has dawned and we decided that we must have missed the morning bite on Thursday. *So, the plan is to get an earlier start. *My crew didn't have breakfast on Friday, opting to eat a sammich on the boat during our 40 mile ride. *We end up at the fishing grounds about an hour and a half earlier than the day before - not bad.

Lines in and off on the troll. *This day we got our fish to the boat. *Had 3 right off the bat with one being 19.5 lbs. *Again, there was a lull in the middle of the day and just as we were about to leave around 2:45 pm, we had one more "day saver" as I called it.

Final tally for day 2 was 4 for us, 4 for Runnin Rock Fish and Lucky @ss Two Moons limited out with 8 *>:(

Saturday December 16th

Building on our previous experiences we all decided to eat boat food for breakfast on Saturday in order to make it to the fishing grounds even sooner. *Everything was going according to plan - no fog and an early start, until we turned north outside the inlet and started to lose power to the engine! *Ok, deep breath, what's wrong?! *I had to pull it down and she was running real ruff! *I had Robin go inspect the primer. *He's back there for like 2 or 3 minutes and I finally have to yell - hey, what's the deal?! *Is the primer tight? *He's like, yeah, its pretty tight. *So, I go inspect and the thing is collapsed! *So I must have an obstruction. *I grabbed the screwdriver and unhooked the gas line from the inlet to the fuel water separator - the line that runs between the separator and the fuel tank. *I gave it a big blow and could feel the crap blow back into the tank. *Then I could hear the tank bubbling so I figured problem fixed, hooked it back and off we went. *Didn't have any more trouble thank God! * We were down approximately 15 - 20 minutes - not bad!

Finally underway the seas had picked up with a north wind and we could only make 20 mph at first. *Not long into it, we could only make 18 mph and finally had to slow to 14 mph which made for a slow ride. *

We did however manage to bang our way 40 miles north before 11am, which was quite an accomplishement, considering.

We start off on the troll and quickly had a hookup. *The fish was on for every bit of 3 seconds before the line went limp. *Upon reeling in the line I realize we've just lost an expensive stretch 30 *::). *But there are no fray marks on the end so I surmize that it probably wasn't a bluefish and the line just broke. *

So we tie on another. *While tying, the line broke again! *I think to myself, this line is bad - its a borrowed TLD 15 reel so I don't know how old the line was. *I tie on anyway and we re-deploy the lines. *Not long after, we had a big knockdown. *That sucker went down like it was hung on the bottom. *Matter of fact, Snead thought it WAS hung on the bottom until he felt the fish flop! *We get this slob to the side of the boat and he's staying down, won't come up, can't see him. *I did see one swirl but no tail, no nothin. *He's right beside the boat when - POP! *Line broke again! *Dang it! *I was ticked and so was Snead. *Musta been a big fish. *At this point the TLD 15 went in the rod box and out came one of my Penn setups. * We lost 3 lures that day - Two moons lost 5 and Runnin Rock Fish lost 3 as well. *Around $150 worth *:o

We keep at and lose at least 3 more fish before finally putting one in the box. *Runnin Rock had 2 and lost 3 trying to net them boatside. *Two moons had a rough day with only 2 fish as well - but they did manage the biggest fish of the trip at 23 lbs - lucky bastad!

In summary, the trip was awesome, weather was nice, nobody got skunked, we got to fish all 3 days, everybody caught a fish, burned 120 +/- gallons of gas, rode over 300 miles on the boat, saw around 29 shooting stars and caught 29 fish between 3 boats and 3 days. *The fish ran average of 18 lbs. * 29 X 18 = 522 lbs of fish. *We all got to take home a nice bag of fillets.

What more could we ask for? * :D

Congrats on the 1100 Mac ;)

Thanks fellas! I'm definitely happy! And ready to go again in a month! The skinny 17 lbers should be a fat 25 lbs by then and hawngry!

What do ya'll think I should do about the obstruction in my fuel lines? I'm thinking new fuel filer, new fuel/h2o separator fileter, but other than that not much more I can do other than have the tank cleaned - is there?

Thanks,
Blue

Alright, here's my educated guess on the fuel restriction. From reading your post, the restriction was between the tank and filter which means basically it is in the tank. right?

There is probably a "sock" on the end of the pickup in the tank. Take it off since you have another filter inline. If you pop the inspection plate at the rear of the tank, you'll see the elbow where the pickup is. The whole thing will unscrew with the pickup tube and sock attatched.

A pic I forgot to add - this is Two Moon's Kencraft Challenger 206. *Its got a sharp deadrise for a 20.6 ft boat which makes for a great ride. *I like the 90 gallons of fuel too. Every day he burned 5 gallons less than me. Also Every day, me and the Grady burned within $1 of each other! Pretty amazing!

Hey Slot - just saw your hypothesis...and have a question. Lets say I wanted to keep the "sock" - where could I get a new one, assuming I needed a new one?

P.S. Its the front inspection hatch on the V-21 where the elbow is. ;)

Hey Blue,

I'm not even gonna comment on the fishin' -I'm way too green with envy. Had to cancel a 2nd Salmon/Steelhead trip - Oregon coastal rivers too swollen with rain and they're having big wave surfing competition on the coast.

I like your high top with the soft upper window in the front. Does it hold the water out OK and how is it in the wind? Do you like it and if so, where'd you get it?

Thanks - Scott

burned 120 +/- gallons of gas, rode over 300 miles on the boat, saw around 29 shooting stars and caught 29 fish between 3 boats and 3 days.

But thats a lot of cash for so little fish!! But the time fishing makes it all perfect!!

But we get 29 fish in a hour here!

Great post and Beautiful fish . In my humble opinon one of the best tasting baked fish there is .Its pretty hard to beat simple white bucktails with trailers. Every year some striper expert invents a super striper lure that cost around $35 bucks but plane old white on white bucktails with 6 inch trailers will catch the same fish a lot cheaper and also puppy drum, cobia and trout...frank

Well Blue, you need to check the sock anyway. *I don't have a v-21 (Dawg) but normally the fill and vent are at the front and the pickup is at the rear of the tank.

Anyhoo, I have no idea where you'd get that sock filter replaced, or why you'd want to. *That became the job of the Racor when it was installed.

Oh, and great trip again. ;D *And yes, I'm jealous too.

You are right! We are eating some really expensive fish! But the fish haven't gotten down here yet either. In a month we'll be able to get 29 in an hour without riding all over the place too. The weather has just been too mild to get the bait moving south.

Slot - I don't know what I'm gonna do. I think you're right about the fill and pickup. Its been a little while since I looked in the inspection plates, but I'm thinking the rear one doesn't allow you access to any part of the fuel tank due to a bulkhead in between. Makes sense for the pickup to be in the rear.

I'll just have to take a look when I have time. Thanks for the input.

Hey Blue, you troll on the big motor or your kicker?

Airslot

Blue_Runner
12-19-2006, 01:12 PM
Big motor. These fish seemed to like anywhere from 6 - 8 mph :o

Or maybe we were just foul hooking them in the mouth ;D

I mainly took my kicker just in case I got way up on a bar on the way out, or if I lost power at a bad time, ran out of gas near the ramp etc.

Anything else I would just call sea tow. I thought about using the kicker for trolling, but I have greater control with the big motor as far as turning and staying on a school goes.

BTW - the last day when it was rough I didn't fill up at the end of the day since we wouldn't be going back out, but I bet I had less than 10 gallons left. I was showing one bar on the yamaha fuel guage. Matter of fact we ran right past the best batch of diving birds of the trip because it was getting late and so little fuel I didn't think it was worth the risk....Two Moons stopped and saw one fish boated but couldn't get a bite so I made the right decision. ;)

Oregon-V20,

Thanks for the compliments.

It holds the water out "ok". It doesn't have any velcro or around the snaps and zippers so if you take a wave over the bow, some water will come in. As for spray, it handles that fine.

I love the enclosure. I hope it holds up for a few more years. I paid $500 for it and bought if from a member of the board here (Franco). He moved to Florida where there's no need for enclosures.

You just gotta keep an eye out. A few people on here have scored tops and enclosures for pretty cheap. Phester's one of em. ;) I think he found it on eBay. Correct me if I'm wrong Phes.

Hope this helps.

8)Awesome trip Blue...can help next time if u need directions on short cut. White barrels although they move the ends occasionally. Glad the inlet not to snotty and looks like u guys had a freakin great trip. Hey, if you need a place at Pirate's Cove let me know. Can help there to. Good buddy owns a house there. Thanks T!

I think I'm gonna remember that shortcut for a while! It really trims off some time. I think it takes off right around 3 miles!

Preciate the offer on the bungalo at Pirates Cove too ;)

We normally stay in Nags Head. Have stayed in the same house the past 2 trips. Huge house. 2 of the bedrooms sleep 4 a piece and I think it has 3 or 4 more bedrooms! Also pool outside (who cares, its December) and pool table inside. Got it for $650.

Hope all is well for you. Your boat isn't in the shop is it?

Franco - tops already paid for itself 3 times over.

I've been maintaining it pretty good. I had a new zipper sewn in last year on the front. I now have some stitching busting loose in the rear that I will have fixed soon. All to be expected in a soft enclosure with some years on it. I'm still very happy with it. I can't imagine riding the 100 miles a day during winter without it! We were very comfortable every day.

When I take it in to have the stiching done, I'm thinking of adding some straps to the rear part of the side windows that would attach to the gunnel and hold them down better. This would also allow me to leave out the rear curtains, whereas right now they tend to flap in the wind and come unsnapped :-/ . I got the strap idea from my buds Grady. It has em and works excellent.

Leaving the rear out would be helpful on those warmer days where spray is more concern than cold.

RAP - well, even if I'm inducted without the slam - I plan on getting the slam ANYWAY! I just love a challenge (if you guys don't know that by now). ;D

Thanks guys,
Blue :D

Blue, sounds and looks like a great trip, cool pics. Fishin' by boat is finished for me as of a week ago. The V was winterized 2 wks. ago and just three days ago, I did the tin boat. [ I actually used the tin about three time as much this past season] And yes, as we've agreed in the past, the enclosure is an outstanding feature. Skools actually posted the e-bay link to were I found mine.....the seller had a buy it now price of 400.00, called him, an hour later I was on the road to somewhere in Brick township N.J.,I'm very happy w/ it ;D

Attention 4 stroke owners - this will make you feel warm and fuzzy.... ;D

I put together some numbers for the 3 day trip. *Average RPM's does not include trolling which was 1400 - 1800 at 5 hrs per day. *It only includes what I tried to hold the stick at on the way to and from the fishing grounds:

Boat/Motor: *1994 Wellcraft V-21 (21ft 4 inches) with 2004 Yamaha 150 2-stroke carbureted 25" shaft right hand rotation.

Day 1
Seas: Flat Calm
Fuel Burned: *44 gallons
Miles Covered: *103
Average RPM's: *3700
MPG: 2.34

Day 2
Seas: Flat Calm
Fuel Burned: *48 gallons
Miles Covered: *102
Average RPM's: *4000

Thats a great report & some nice fish. The bite is really hot just south of me at the CBBT right now. Im planning on trying Saturday. The weather looks questionable but Im going to try anyway.
Those Kencrafts are nice boats. I had a 21.5 CC for 10 years that served me well. I just sold it this past summer. Got something a bit smaller (20 ft. Maritime Skiff) with a 4 stroke on it. I had a 200 Ocean Runner on my Challenger that ran great but liked its gas. Great riding boat though.

Come on now Blue, your cheatin us carbed outboard guys. You burnt 10 gallons a day trolling minimum which really skews your numbers. Your probably getting better than 3 mpg running. I know what mine does becasue of the flow meter. Now that said, the new tech outboards will troll at less then 1gph, and thats where they really get us.

Thanks Shore-Power.

Slot, since I don't have a fuel flow meter I'm limited in my calculations.

I can tell you I burned roughly a quarter of a tank after 45 miles of straight out running. Quarter tank is 15 gallons. 45 divided by 15 is 3, so I think you are right on there bro!

On another note, those 1st 2 days when it was flat calm, we should have went tuna fishing. The guys we talked to that did go caught the mess out of em and went no further than 40 miles out. Said it was slick calm out there too. 8) Never caught a tuna on my boat :'(

Yep, I'd have tried for a tuna. The giants are running around the area. They weighed one this week that went something like 825 after it was bled / gutted. Can you imagine ;D

No can't imagine my V-21 being pulled under by a fish ;D

I was talking YFT - you know, the kind that you can actually catch on something smaller than a 130.

The fish were running 30 - 40 lbs.

BFT would be fun though. I'd like to do it at least once in my life - on a charter boat.

A pic of some tuna caught on Dec. 16th, which was the last day we went striper fishing...looks like fun size.

OMG MY FIRST MATE JUST EMAILED ME. Reflecting upon my earlier writings, I've come to the conclusion that HE is right. I left out a few of the best details of the trip!

READ THIS!!

hey man i went on wellcraftv20.com and read your post. very nice job, i love the shooting stars paragraph and then mpg formulation. everyone on there seems pretty cool. you did however miss a few things during your fishing report....

"On the final day of the trip, i, captain blue runner was some what irritated. The early incident with the motor and the lack of fish made for a long bumpy ride back. Because of my pisstivity level and being half drunk i decided to drive 30mph on the way back through the 7-8 foot seas. we hit one wave on a bad angle and my first mate cory was thrown a good 10-12 feet into the air and fell helpless back down. Fortunetly for first mate cory his fall was broken by his head which smashed into the exposed metal piece on the captains chair. I felt bad at first since the first mate had done such a great job all trip especially with his supurb gaffing abilities. But then i thought well thats what he gets for always wanting to rub wieners together."

and

"i captain blue runner wanted to go out drinking one night and my first mate had already passed out. I tried getting him up but to no sucess. it made me think of my former first mate chad "i run into buoys" beck. i said to my first mate "i can't wait for chad to get better" thinking this would get him motivated he sleepingly mumbled a f*** you and rolled back over"

and

"one of my crew by the name of causey was also on this trip. we call him causey, cause he always goes.hey..hey..hey..(with his fist pointed towards you waiting on a pound) more high fives than pounds this trip which was better for myself and the crew"

AND

"one day on the way back i decided to let my crew take over and take a nap in the cuddy cabin. the ride was bumby and i had eaten a lot of processed meats all day long. well i don't know how else to put this. i s*** myself"

I hope you like e'm. i'm heading to Lexington on saturday. holla at me.

Awesome report and pics.

When I went to NC to get my V20, I stoped to look at a 20' Kencraft. I loved the lines and the deev V, I looked more like a 22 footer that 20, the only thing I didn't like about it was the sticker price :o

Shamefully, you are right....good stuff.

I will add one correction - the captain was NOT drunk...I dare say that a 5 beers over the course of 8 hours constitutes drunkenesss, does it? I only wish I could blame my mishap on that ::)

Besides, who hasn't shat thier britches at least once in thier life? ;D

P.S. "Shat" is past tense of Sh1t. ;D

OK, well I read it again. To his credit he did say "half drunk" ::)
