If yer considerin' Angler, ya might as well be lookin' at Bayliners, too ;) ... the Angler dealer down here...if yer foolish enough to walk in and ask about one on his lot, his response is, "Go out and get me the HID offn' the one ya like, brang it back in here and I'll tell ya how much it'll cost ya."

MJ, my brother has a 1989 22' Angler with a 225 Merc on it. 3 guys with gear and full fuel she tops out about 44 mph. The boat is built well for an entry level boat. It performs great in choppy water, it has alot to do with the position of the helm. The helm is set back further in the boat providing for a softer ride but not compromising deck space. It is truly a walkaround, you can actually sit on the front or stand and cast. Theres alot of room on the front of the boat and the cabin is big for a 22 footer without taking up too much deck space. The downside to the boat is limited fuel capacity 65 gallons. All in all I think angler makes a good boat, I know alot of the older ones are still around.

Thanks everyone!! all opions are welcome!! I did not go look at the Angler today I called it off after hearing all the bad reviews, here and else were!!
But then I get a good review from Mulv and a good friend?? I might go Monday to look?? But with a 17* Deadrise I think its not what I am looking for?
I like the first boat BGA posted in OH the other has the stepp deck and i nom its a good boat as I fished on one for years with a friend, But that step up sucks and makes for a small deck area.
Keep them coming guys! Only 4 days left on ebay and 14 people watching of coarse I think 13 are V20 people?? ;)

MJ, Don't let that 17 degree deadrise scare you. They have a sharp entry that really cuts through the chop. We use my brothers boat in the Delaware Bay which I think is probably similar to the type of water you run in. It always has an afternoon chop, while my V slaps me to death my brothers Angler knocks down the chop with ease. It sounds like I'm a paid endorser of Angler, but seriously the boat rides great, you won't be disappointed in the ride.

Angler has been around awhile and they have made some dramatic iprovements the last five or six years and they are pretty well built now adays.
That second one BGA posted in PA looks very nice, if the engine is in nice shape that would be a sweet boat, and I rather like the step up due to water on the deck point of view but understand the smaller fishing area.
You sure you don't want to look at a CC MJ. plenty of fishing room and with the addition of some wing canvass for cooler weather could be nice.

I believe FORMULA was built on similar molds as to the BERTRAM 20 MOPPIE, THEY HAVE DEADRISE!!!!(28 degrees!!!!). It definately looks fast, nice sharp entry to it too. WILLY may be right though MJ, 2 bilge pumps could be bad for you. If only I had the money, it could be just right for me. Only about 6 hour drive for me.

Well after some careful research, I found out that the FORMULA 233 was in fact designed by Jim Wynne and Walt Walters. Jim Wynne based his designs off of the origanal Ray Hunt deep vee design sporting 24 degrees of deadrise, so she is based off of similar lines to the BERTRAM 25/31. The 233 FORMULA was the first hull that FORMULA boats designed under it's founder Don Aronow. Don Aronow later founded DONZI, and then MAGNUM and finally CIGARETTE, all of which were origanally founded off of the 233 FORMULA's design. So that FORMULA has quite the performance history to it, and a VERY sea-keeping design as well(everybody here has heard of BERTRAM and there fame I believe).
Learn somethin new everyday, who knew the internet was good for more than porn and forums ;D.
If you could extend your budget, here's 2 close to you.

Responce from the FL Formula auction over 6 days
Yes I can tow it to long beach but we have to through in an extra $45 for gas. ( Funny, he will tow to Biloxi Ms for free. But wants $45 more to go the 18 miles to Long beach??) THe decks are rock solid I had the center deck replaced with marine grade wood that had been treated with west system two part epoxy so it will last longer than the rest of the boat. Not one soft spot on the entire boat. I do not have the compression number from the motors in the last 100 hours but I do from when I bought the motor a year ago and will gladly look those up for you if you would like. I do have all of the service records from the dealer for that motor since it was new. The bracket was on there when I purchased the boat it had an old evinrude that started to give me problems so I got rid of the motor and put the new one on that is what sparked the restoration. If yoyu have any further questions please feel free to call me

Responce from Wellcraft in MI. auction ove 20 hours
yes the trailer is going with the boat it is an alluminum trailer that I have used to take the boat back and forth to Florida. The boat doesn't have soft spots and yes it has a step up to the forward walk around deck. I will transport it to most places for a dollar a mile.
So this would cost me like $850 if he towed it to me.

You know MJ, you may have swayed my decision on what boat I want to get in the near future. There are quite a few of these 23' FORMULAS down here that need engine work for not alot of money. She definately has nice lines to her, and is definately built off of the legendary RAY HUNT deep-vee design.

I have 2 friends I fish with that both own F233 Formula's. The are a deep v boat that rides well. Trim tabs are a MUST for these boats as they allow you to make the most of that 24 degree dead rise. Both of my friends boats have SBC powered inboards and the boats are fast and very able. Excellent fishing boats. Dare I say it here? but IMHO the Formula is a big step up in ride and sea worthyness from the V-20. Ad trim tabs and a hard top & curtains to the formula's and you can fish with just about anyone in all but the worst kind of weather. Very similar in performance to the 24 Albemarle's. That one on Ebay looks really nice too!
Let the hate mail begin... :P

Very similar in performance to the 24 Albemarle's. *
I would hope the performance is similiar. The FORMULA 233's mold was used as the foundation for the first CONTENDER 25, SEEVEE 25, ALBEMARLE 242, BLUEWATER 2350, ALMMAND 23, and the first DONZI's. After I did a little research, turns out the 233's hull was the foundation for countless other boats.

Don't give up on ebay MJ, I bid on mine with less than 1 minute left, could be someone waitting til the last seconds.
Bygracealone
08-28-2007, 12:21 PM
That's right MJ. Many people wait till the end to bid on items. Everybody wants to play their cards close, so that nobody knows what they're thinking or planning to do. The only problem with that approach is that sometimes reserves won't be met because not enough bidders bid to get it that high.
I don't mean to preach, but a Proverb that oftentimes gives me perspective on things like this says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths (Proverbs 3:5-6)."
One more: Proverbs 16:9 A man's heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.
There is comfort to be found in knowing that these things are not in our control. Do the best you can to sell your boat and if it's the Lord's will, it will certainly happen. If not, there's a reason for it and perhaps we'll never know the reason.
Worst case scenario is that you end up with your trusty V and you try to sell her again later. At least you have your boat and she's in good running order.
Hang in there buddy.

That would break the bank and I have to wait a year or better before I could look for a motor. ???
well we will see what happens?

Macojoe, I have a 1985 Formula 20'Sunsport I might be interested in selling. It currently has a 265 h.p. mercruiser that was used in salt water only once for about a week. It would make an awesome fishing boat with a bracket/outboard on it. Very high freeboard. Very solid boat. It has a huge cabin for a 20' boat. It sits on a 1985 Shorelander trailer. Boat is in great shape with exception of interior. Any interest?

Sounds great nipper!
But they are small compared to are V20's and I need room and deep water boat!
I commercial fish and would like to be able to go offshore in comfort again!
Thanks any way!

knowing your search is down to Formula's and SeaCrafts should make it easier to find, keep looking. Me personally, after having fished both boats, I prefer the SeaCraft, especially in an outboard configuration. remember when you're searching for Sea Crafts, type it in both ways" SeaCraft, & Sea Craft.
BTW, did you see the 25 Whitewater on Classic Seacraft, interesting boat.

The 25 WHITEWATER is also a FORMULA 233 copy hull. Sale pending as of 8-26 though.

Thanks guys!!
Not to much for sale on that site? Guess cause $25 is needed to do so.
Well I would love to go get that FL boat in Key's and stop by skools or spares and grab at least a 200HP !!
But I can't see how I could do it?? Shipping is the only way and thats $$$
But keep them coming!
I am going to look at that one in Arlington that Therm posted tomorrow. If I like I will go back this weekend for sea trial and hopefully find the money some were??
I have 3K and the guy wants $4400 B/O so you know $4K is going to be easy to get, But I am short $1K
Now there is away to get around this, I habve a friend that wants to buy my trailer for $1K and give me his old.
His trailer is road worthy and he uses every week to tow his 21 Contender, it needs a fender and maybe a few rollers but its fine!
So my thought is sell him the trailer and get the old one, sell my boat for $4K I still make out with the $5K I wanted and I can buy this boat this weekend and wait awhile for mine to sell.
How does that sound guys?? Of coarse thats if I like this boat.
The plan sounds good, except for the part of selling your boat for only $4,000.00 :o :o If you can sit on it for a wile, I still would not lower the price of yours, Unless oyu are selling it to me ;D(trust me, I have thought about it ;))
Good luck!!

08-29-2007, 11:09 AM
Thanks Sean, But I have it advertised wqith the new trailer :o
So if i do this deal people are going to want to know what happened?? I have to find a good story for that?
I want $5K thats a good deal! so how I get it is no matter, so is I swap trailers and they are not to mad if I get $4k I will be happy!
My wife has no idea that I have cash on hand and unless I sell my boat I have to keep the new boat hidden at a friends till I swell mine :'(
Another good reason for the cheaper price cause I like tro fisah the fall run, so I have to get rid of it!!
Buy it wil ya!! $4K ;)

Ok I went and looked at the boat, Needed huge amount of cosmetic, but thats OK, Then I looked at the motor, could have been cleaner, But I have seen worse, and all looked well.
Then I started punching the stringers, not hard and all in the engine well were solid.
NOW I ck the gauges and all the switches and they all worked even the wipers!
Got in the cuddy looked OK, lifted the cushions and there are wood hatches open the pass side first and hit the stringers, sounded little hollow?
Went to the drivers side went to punch the stringer and my hand went right thur!@! No wood left except some rotted splinters!
Guy was trying to hook up water and I said forget it, he said why, I said the stringers are roted, he came up and looked we shook hands and as I was leaving he looked like he was about to cry!!
Feel Bad I was the one to tell him!!
So the search goes on!!

I have different boat to look at here maybe tomorrow and there is a sweet Mako in NY I like for someone to look at for me?
as much as I like the Formula & Seacraft they are hard to find here not all rotted out!! and the rest are way to far to find out.
So I am changing a little here now?? The 23 w/a Mako I seen in NY looks great but no motor, but in my price range!
Then there is a 23 W/A Sea OX here with bracket and Evinrude that looks good, I am going to try to go look tomorrow?? I waiting for the guy to call.

MJ....slow down and focus. While the 23 W/A Sea Ox is a tank, it will beat you to death. I thought you were looking for a boat that would ride well? Some of the directions you have contemplated seem close to backward? You don't wanna end up with a boat that rides no better than the V and costs twice as much to run?

one thing to keep in mind about the SeaCrafts, is the stringers are all glass, yeah most of the transoms are rotted out, but you have a good foundation to work with, with no unforseen hull issues once you start cutting
macojoe
08-30-2007, 08:50 PM

The SEACRAFTS don't have as many rot issues, but they do suffer from the same affliction as the old sterndrive 25 BERTRAMS. The stringers are held in by tabs that over time tend to delaminate and seperate from the hull. There are quite a few SEACRAFTS out there with cracked hulls at the lifting strakes where the stringers broke loose. It isn't a huge problem, but has been an issue. What year MAKO you lookin at MJ? There are quite a few different MAKO deigns out there. One thing I can tell you is the MAKO 251, 254, 201 and a few 231's were used down here by the FISH AND WILDLIFE COMMISION, and they ran them HARD! They held up so well that they extended the service life of them out to 12 years I believe it was. There is still quite a few 201's and 254's in service today down here as well. Although I haven't seen any of the TRACKER built hulls in service down here(does this say anything to you ;)).

1989 Mako 23 W/A OB , set up for Merc, but motor blown.
I am going to look at a 1984 Sea OX 23 W/A Bracket with 225 Evinrude That has been rebuilt in two stages, lower unit one year top end the next, says I can do my own compression test!!
But one problem, has a 113 gal gas tank that does not leak but he has problem getting gas out of it??
I going in the morning.

Joe there is a 1984 238 Mako on budget boats that's a cuddy with a walk around cabin no motor for $3000.00 and looks pretty good.

Thanks AXE!! I was on there earlier and some how missed it??
There is a few good looking deals on there??
They also have a 23 w/a Sea Ox like the one I am going to look at tomorrow.
If this Sea Ox Or the Mako I am looking at doesn't work I will look there!!
I am just tired of fixing all the time!! n Took 9 years to get the V to were it is and now I am selling? And looks like I will have to give it away!!

I posted this one a while back, but this guy has had this boat up for sale for quite a while, he couldn't get any one interested with the new motor and outdrive, so now he split them apart. Yeah you would have to put a transom in it to accept a brackect, but figure he spent a ton of money fixing the rest of the boat up to accept that new engine and drive, the rest of the boat should be worth it

That one there wouldn't be a step up from his V-20, that is one of the older low deadrise hulls with the low gunnels.

Before I fell in love with you guys... I mean V20's... I was looking at Shamrock's. *How do they hold up?
It's more than you want to spend MJ but here is one with the coveted pilothouse:
http://www.usedboats.com/powerboats/1989/20'-ft/shamrock/pilot-house/pilothouse-(power)/inboard/34224/1315580.htm
For some reason, I can't get the whole URL to come up as a working link. *It does work if you copy and paste the whole thing into the address bar.

A buddy of mine has a Shamrock 20, the sides are shorter than some Jon boats I've seen. And they have fiberglass fuel tanks (ie: don't work with ethanol).
But I love the Pilot House idea.
