Fished today with my friends John Helton and Chris Bishop. They were heading down from Salisbuury Md. and asked me to jump on board for one last try in the Bay. John is an excellent eel guy and he and Chris have been doing the day time drift thing for years with great succes including winning the big striper tourny. out of Chrisfield Md. last month so I was in good company.
We fished between Cape Charles and the Plantation light early on in the DEEP water with good luck on fish up to 44 inches. Chris released a 44 inch for a citation. John has a nice open aray radar that he uses to find birds working fish and he happened to see some about 3 miles west of where we were fishingso we headed over and found a nice beehive of gannets and marked lots of fish & bait. We spent the remainder of the day there and we caught small, medium, & large fish there all day but no monsters. Around 2 pm John announced we were going to move and make on last drift before we headed in. We got set up and the smallest spinning rod we had in the water started to pour off line in the bait runner mode. John told me to grab it and when I put it in gear the fish dumped half the spool before I got it turned. Long story short after a fairly long fight she was 46 inches and hit the scales at 44 pounds. The picture does not do the fish justice but here it is. A BIG thanks to Marty Bull at the lunch box in Parklsey who I called at home this evening to get my fish weighed. Marty came and opened his place long enough to weigh my fish for me.. Thanks Marty. And THANK YOU John!

Congrats on getting the paper. I'm living vicariously over the internet as I'm 430 miles inland for the weekend. I'll get my ocean fish next week, I hope.

Thanks Air. *I had a couple releases but I really wanted to get one over 40 lbs.
Im going to run out in the Ocean next week if the wind lets me. *The fish are there but just a bit too far out. * Big blues mixed in with them too.
How far from shore is the winter quarters shoal?

WQ is just over the line. Better fishing right now 5-10 miles south of Wach. Of course that was a couple days ago. Have to wait for my buddy w/ monster radar 30 ft high to pick em out for us ;D
