Hello,

My name is Chris. I live in Savannah GA. My first boat was a 1988 v-20 fisherman/cc. It had a 200 Yamaha. I realized after the first day of riding that this was the perfect hull. I kept that boat for 5 years. Then I bought a 1991 fisherman/cc with a closed transom and an armstrong full flotation bracket holding a merc 225. I know, some would say that is too much motor, believe me it wasn't. I wouldn't put a 225 on a v-20 with a cutaway transom. The full flotation bracket was key. The '91 would do a solid 60knts(safely, I might add). After fishing that boat for 3 years, I thought I would move up to a 1989 23 fisherman/cc. Wow! What a mistake that was. You can really tell the difference in hull design. The v-20 was drier and softer than that big ole heavy 23. After finally getting rid of the 23 I am in the market for another v-20 fisherman/cc with a closed transom.
Anyway, thats my v-20 story hope to chat with you all soon.

Chris

P.S. I have heard that Ray hunt also designed the 21 seahawk/scorpion hull for chris-craft. Supposedly he scaled up the v-20 hull to make it a foot longer. when he did that something happened to lift/drag ratio and I know those boats don't ride anything like the v-20(very sluggish). Anybody else heard this?

No problem Chris. At least being in this section, you're also letting people know that you're looking. I see them listed frequently in your area on www.boattraderonline.com
Best of luck in your search. ;)

Hi Chris,

My name is Rico, located Tacoma (Seattle) WA.
A coincidence you described the boat you had, because that is now I believe what I am looking for.

V20, full transom, Armstrong bracket, 200 HPDI. I never considered more than 200, and even had decided on 150, but why not go for 50 kts, or 60! Didn't know possible. Maybe this is my new goal. I have a 60' boat that goes 11 knots (www.evening-star-expeditions.com), which is use as my mothership up in British Columbia, near Campbell River. If this boat has the ride, then I really can cover the ground to get to the salmon fishing spots. Nootka Sound, the West Coast of Vancouver Island is our prime fishing, but ocean, and you need a good hull. The perfect salmon boat is 20-24', nothing larger or smaller I feel. I have a 18' now.

I have seen on the internet a V20 with a 200 HP in your area. Would you be able to go over and take a look at it? Call me, and I will give you the details.
(253) 720-8200. I would like to talk to you more about your experience with your boat.

Regards,

Rico

Welcome CBE317

That was a very interesting 1st post - especially the part about the scorpion hull. It should be interesting to hear Bigshrimpin's take on that. BS... HELLO?

Hi Chris, I just joined this forum myself.

I bought a 1985 V-20 Steplist with a Volo-Penta outdrive last week off Ebay (of all places). Luckily the boat was an hour's drive away so I could inspect it before I bid. The hull and transom are solid but I'll need to drop a new engine in it and a fair amount of clean-up. I wasn't planning on a project boat this summer, but I love the V-20's lines and everyone tells me they're a good boat even offshore. I ended up getting the boat and trailer for $2300 we'll see if it turns into a money-pit.

After I bought the boat I was searching for info on the V-20 using Yahoo and Google and they popped up with several ads for V-20's for sale. Give them a try. Use "wellcraft V-20" in the search. You can also try boats.com

Good Luck.

MJ, yes, it's true. I can be bought but I'm certainly not cheap. ;D

Jester, welcome. ALL BOATS ARE MONEY PITS!
Acronym for BOAT = Break Out Another Thousand. ;) ;D

thanx CB,

Very nice boat. I really have my heart set on the full transom though. Its a very tough hull to find around here. And those who do have them dont want to part with them. Thats Understandable.

Again, thanx for the tip.

Let's gather up ten (10) I/O hulls and convert them.
Who wants to do this we me? Spec it out, put out to bid, make'em and sell 'em. Professional restoration, hi-tech, maximum performance. Not amateur; big difference. I'll take two for me right now. If the new Wellcraft V-21 costs $40K, wouldn't you rather have the real deal for $20?
You can tell I don't have much to do these days other than send these free messages to strangers about some old boat design.
