I am considering upgrading to a 140 Suzuki 4 stroke.
Will need to sell my 1991 Yamaha 200 2 stroke. Runs very good, will idle all day. Has great compression and low hours according to original owner. It will come with gauges, controls and wire harness.
I have seen prices all over the net from $1,500 to $3,500. What are these engines really worth???
My main reason to upgrade is fuel mileage.
It appears that the 4 stroke will weigh more than my 2 stroke ( 75 lbs.) so I may have to add tabs.

Well I got $1500 to $2000 ???
I will tell you that I bought a 1989 Yamaha 175 hp with controls, remote oil tank, cables, wire harness, two years ago and I paided $1800
I feel that I got a good deal even so I had to do a little work to it.
Did you ever replace the shift rod since you bought it ?? That is a big $$ Item when they go if you can't do your self and that will Be a great Boost for a selling point!!
If not that might be a draw back when you sell??
Mine broke the 1st season and thank god the guy I bought mine from worked on them all the time and did it for $300. By what I hear it is like a $700 to $1000 job.
Any how I would say if it is pretty and you give all the stuff with it ask $2300 or so and grab anything $1800 or better. IMO
Good Luck!!

CBUZZ....WELCOME BACK!!
Resale price is all about the condition, or the perceived condition, of the motor. In really good condition, they can sell for much more than book value.
Macojoe makes a good point about the shift rod, but I am not sure what year they went to a stainless rod -- it might not apply to your motor.
Based on the posts by FUGAZI, I don't think you will be happy with the 140 4stroke, after having a 200 2stroke.
Have you considered other options like HPDI?

Yes I am now looking at 150 HPDI. Lots of confusing information out there. It seems as though there may be more available mid range torque with the HPDI with comparable fuel burn at all but the lowest RPM ranges.
It is amazing that both of those engines weigh more than my current Yammy 200.
I am still looking for some acual dyno numbers for both engines just to verify what I have been reading about both engines.
It appears none of the mfg's want to provide that info.

You will hate the 4 stroke 140!! Not even close to what a 200 will do!! I would not go less then a 150 and seeing that you are going 4 stroke you will have to go more to compensate for the low out put os a 4 stroke.
I have been told the they went to SS in the Yamaha in 94 ?? Not sure this is right but I have heard 93 before none the less you have a 91 so I bet it is steel!

welcome back cbuzz!! I've been watching a few yamaha's off ebay. Seems like the 90 and newer engine (with the updated cowling . . . go figure) are getting a little better price than the 84 - 89 even though the 90 - 92 engines still had the carbon steel shift shaft and corrison issues associated with the non saltwater series yamahas. If I remember correctly your boat had very light use and was garaged (i.e. well cared for). So you should be closer to $2500 - $2800
Fugazi - seemed to be disappointed with the performance of his Johnson 4 stroke 140. He mentioned that the economy was great and the engine was super quiet, but the acceleration and top end was less than his old 2 stroke 140.
Might be worth checking into the new yamaha 150 4 stroke or the 200 HPDI (same weight as the 150hpdi)
