Wondering if there are any members that have ever tried growing mushrooms at home? I'm not talking about the kind that make you see aliens. :fam:

I got interested in it some years back but finally tried it myself starting in April this year. I bought some Shiitake sawdust spawn online and inoculated a couple dozen fresh cut white oak logs. Recently I started force fruiting the logs in batches of 3 at a time. That was last weekend and in a couple days I'll be harvesting my first flush of shiitake mushrooms. Pretty cool to see it actually work and I can't wait to try them out!

Phat - sounds crazy, but I don't know how to post a pic anymore! LOL

Harvested 5 over the weekend that totaled right at 1 lb combined. The biggest was close to softball diameter and weighed in at 3.4 oz. Beginner's luck I guess!

Wife and I made chicken marsala for dinner last night and it was quite tasty.

I harvested a batch yesterday. I've been keeping track of totals and weight. So far the totals are 38 shrooms with combined weight of 3.2 lbs.

Temps have cooled and humidity is lower. Plus when you force fruit they typically only put out for a couple weeks. So I expected this run would stop soon.

There are a dozen or so more logs I could force, but my little water hole has dried up so I'd have to get something to soak the logs in. I haven't decided what to do yet but will update when there is something to report.

So far my favorite way to cook is whole on the grill, olive oil, salt/pepper, a little garlic powder, score an "x" on the top of the shroom and cook it just like you would a hamburger patty. Soooo goood! I have an old Holland grill that I've been keeping alive for years lol. For those that know the Holland grill.

Hey Blue,

In case you weren’t aware, someone has purchased the old Holland Grill company and is saying they’re going to get them, with newer models, back in production. When they took possession, they found a stock of parts for existing grills too.

And you’re making me hungry for some ****akes.

That’s a manly grill. I like it
Anyone can buy a new grill but yours is personalized. And works too.

There’s nothin’ wrong with hillbilly if it works. And that setup definitely has character. I’m with Step, I like it. You may have tell your wife “you got friends in low places”.

Glad to be of help. I’d never heard of Holland until Blue mentioned it. I have an old Weber that runs on natural gas. It’s not hot enough and the heat is pretty uneven, even after my son bought new burner tubes for me. Are Hollands particularly good? Worth seeing if they ever make it to the west coast when it’s time to replace mine?

Phat - love your customized Holland setup :fam:

Scook, the Hollands are great. Not for speed, and not particularly for searing. But you can easily cook a whole meal without fear of burning anything. Up to around 400 degrees. I think 375 is the sweet spot. Throw on some chicken, pork, steak etc. Makes great baked potatoes also, throw them on with some EVOO + salt, wrapped in foil or unwrapped. I'm pretty sure you can cook anything on a Holland.

IDK if it is a Holland Grill saying but, have always heard with the Holland, "
if you're looking you're not cooking." I find it to be true.

There always seems to be some decent used Holland's on FB Marketplace.

Thanks Blue - I’ll have to check to see if any have migrated out west. We do love to grill stuff. Just did some Elk burgers but I think my favorites are steak, flank steak and Salmon.
