Just called for gas to be mixed with 15% ethanol. I understand this will affect marine motors but I’m not exactly sure how. Spare?

Hey Charlie I'm not spare, not even close but I know 15 percent ethanol will void marine engine warrantys. It's not good stuff not for marine engines do not use it. .

ethanol free only for you Charlie, unless you want o re-jet your carbs. I'm in the same situation with my 150 Johnson, Although I dropped my total timing y two degrees as well. No e fuel for me. i paid $5.98 per gallon of e free on the water three weeks ago. I bought e free from a station two weeks ago for $5.15. FJB and the ethanol industry lobby. If you meet a corn farmer, knock the hell out of him, he can afford it

Hey Spare - my boat’s been sitting for at least three years and the non-ethanol gas (with stabilizer) may be five years old. How long is/was that gas good for?

about 6 months. Pump it out, run it in your lawnmower or use it to kill weeds, burn trash

The last thing I want to do is take the dam thing apart again. I think I’m done boating forever! I’m tired of humping gas cans from the car to the boat. I’m tired of burning $50-$75 bucks for a few hours of drifting for shorts. I’m tired of running to and from the channel at no wake speed for 25 minutes to and from my slip. I’m tired of kayakers beating me to my spot because they paddle faster than this piece of sh!t boat runs wide open. I’m tired of cleanup at the dock after a couple hours fishing. I’m tired of having a motor so reliable that the $200 I spent on Seatow was a waste of good money. I’m tired of a$$holes waving as they pass because they think we all belong to a secret society because we all own boats. I’m tired of being the only boat on the water that has any idea what the crap I’m doing. I’m tired of paying $100 bucks to fill 4 gas cans when the same quantity of gas would have cost me $35 bucks under PRESIDENT TRUMP!!! I’m tired of having something to fix every time I go near the dam thing.
I’m sure there’s plenty I’m forgetting, but most of all….. I’m tired.

As far as wasted money on Sea Tow, it s like any insurance, the only thing you buy that you hope you never use.

never, ever, ever, add up how much it cost to go boating

Charlie, in all honesty, you've done good, you got a boat up and running and useable, no its not the optimum set up, but it runs, it floats, its got you on the water. And you got it there on your own, be proud of that. Keep running the boat, get a gas dolly on wheels, or run portable tanks that make it easier to put fuel on the boat rather than pay on the water prices. I'm doing the same thing right now. The boat market is already dropping fast, keep your eyes open for a 150+ hp engine this fall, plan to repower this winter. Sell you 115 off to someone who needs a smaller engine. Keep refining the boat over teh winter. Take the time to get all that bottom paint off and repaint it with a fresh coat of hard paint this spring. Enjoy

We cannot get e free gas here in NJ. (None that I know of at any rate) But I have to be honest. My 93 (Coffin cowl) Merc 200 runs fine on E10. I hate that I have to put it in her, but really what are my choices.... Sail or some kind of inboard diesel boat? I think it's time for the engine makers to step up to the plate and make engines that can handle E15. I mean, really... if you think about it.... cars run on E15 with no restrictions on the warrantee, so why not boat engines? Ya, I know... it corrodes aluminum..... so why not sleeve the cylinders with steel and coat the passageways with chrome? Any place that the $hit Ethanol can get to. There's no good reason it can't be done. Hell, make the entire engine out of Titanium and it will last forever.... it should only cost about 100K and everyone knows that boaters have unlimited amounts of money so that's no big deal... right?

there are plenty of good reasons it cant be done, namely cars don't run under full load all the time unlike boats. Never mind the fact that the more ethanol you put in the gas the worse mileage you get. Fuel lines, fuel tanks, fuel pumps, etc...I replace fuel lines and clean injectors on a regular basis. If you let your car set for more than 30 days, it will need it as well. BTW, most modern marine engines are running plated bore cylinders and coated pistons that are superior to steel bore cylinders. Ethanol is a horrible fuel, it takes more in diesel to produce it than it makes and it is horribly corrosive. Ive got a buddy that's a Service manager at a large Honda car dealership, they have a steady stream of fuel issues with people running E fuel. The only reason we have ethanol fuel is courting corn farmer votes in swing states. Under Carter, we had gasahol, under Clinton we had Oxygenated fuel(MTBE or ether enhanced, all derived from corn ethanol). Under Obama, we had E10, under Biden we are getting E15. Closed loop fuel systems adjust their fuel mix to make up for this type fuel, increasing emissions, and decreasing fuel mileage(increasing fuel tax). It has nothing to do with emissions, everything to do with buying votes. The only thing you can do to prevent this is pay attention to your votes.https://njroute22.com/ethanol-free-gasoline/#:~:text=Ethanol-free%20gas%20in%20NJ%20is%20next%20to%20impossible ,called%20Pure-gas.org.%20There%20aren%E2%80%99t%20many%20places% 20in%20NJ.

BTW, if you are running any new engine, fuel related issues are not covered under any warranty, and running E15 will void your warranty. Most dealerships will take a fuel sample right off the bat if there is any complaint of running issues under warranty. they will keep their finding in your records incase you develop any issues while under warranty

Got a friend who is a marine mechanic for the local navy base, works on a small fleet of outboards, mostly Verados on RIB dive boats and Whaler Guardians. He was telling me they run all non ethanol in all motors and are not allowed to use any blend of it. So apparently the govt does not have to follow their own rules

Gas is not blended with ethanol until loaded into the tanker trucks. So if you order 1000 gallons of E-10,they put in 900 gallons of gas and 100 gallons of ethanol. Then the agitation of the road trip mixes it.

That s the reason the sticker on the pump says May contain up to 10%. I used to have a test kit and have found it as low as 2 to 4 percent

All EPA mileage numbers are with non ethanol

Like spare says, nothing but a govt sponsored shell game

No argument from me. I hate the stuff.... Have said for years that it's bad news. (And it actually costs MORE to make the stuff than is does pure gas...yet now if you can find it pure gas costs more) Go figure....But like I said, you cannot get pure gas anywhere in NJ that I am aware of. So it's either use e10 or sit home and watch my boat(s) collect dust and grime. Oh the pleasures of living in a Democrat hell state....

As far as I know you can't get it here in New York either.

can you guys get off road fuel? I know we have a local fuel supplier. One of my customers has a 500 gallon tank at his house, they come and fill it up with non e fuel, no road tax. He has a construction business so he runs the paper work thru it. He has a 30 ft contender that he keeps the tanks full from that storage tank. IIRC, he had about $750 in the tank and pump

There are a handful of stations in downstate New York that sell E free. Nearest one is a 45 minute drive. Conoco. Real pain in the a$$. Right now the pumps are marked 10% or less. Once they change it up I might not have a choice.

Spare, one of the many issues that plague me is the marina. They don’t mind if I carry gas cans on board but they don’t let you fill up at the dock. We pull a couple hundred yards off to a nice big marsh area and pump it in there. The gas dolly won’t help me much.

I understand why they wont let you fuel at the dock. Run portable tanks. 6 gallon tanks are easy to handle, run them first, strap them on the deck when they are empty to keep them out of the way, run off the main tank to get back home. You can install a fuel selector valve and switch between the main tank and carry on tanks. Every time you go down to the boat, add 5 gallons to the main tank. BTW, race car gas jugs work far better then the gas jugs with the stupid epa fillers. They even make a battery operated transfer pump for them. The guys I rent my shop from use them to refuel their jet ski rentals. I've transferred fuel from carry on tanks just using a fuel line with a primer bulb attached. Keep the quick disconnect on the line, clip on the carry on tank, get the siphon going with the primer bulb. When using plastic tanks, be careful of static electricity

I removed the epa insert from the tanks. I use the $11.99 battery powered pump to fill the main tank. I got 4 USA made 5 gallon cans from BJs for $17.99 each. I pump them into the tank and toss them in the cuddy. That little cuddy is so loaded with crap, it’s just another bit of crap taking up space. We have a good little system going. Takes about 12-14 minutes to dump 20 gallons in the tank. Last week we went outside to one of the inshore reefs and took 2 extra cans with us. Burned less than I thought we would.
