New stator question

Can the stator be checked while it is still hooked up to the switch box? What I mean if the stator leads( wires) are connected to the switch box or do they have to be off the switch box.

I'm glad you said that cause I did check one set of wires coming from the stator while they were still attached to the switch box and got bad readings.
