so i'll be driving down for a couple weeks, end of july if you guys don't shut down the state. (florida) I had a pistol permit in new York years back but need to start from scratch to get a new one. the process can take up to 8 months. a buddy of mine said if I have a new York state hunting license I can purchase a handgun in florida. this doesnt make sense to me. can any of you florida guys confirm this?

that's what I thought but he said there's a loophole. I didn't want to establish residence there just yet. I planned on spending most of my time fishing.

Charlie,the jails are full of people who thought they were doing the right thing, when it comes to handguns you better check with all authority's involved . I wanted to bring my handgun from jersey to Georgia And asked a cop friend of mine and he told me that I could as long as I keep the bullets sepperated , that didn't sound right to me so I just left it home. But in the future I will contact the right people and make absolutely sure I
can travel with it.

you have to be a resident of the state you purchase a handgun in, or have it shipped to a dealer in your home state for transfer. Unless you are military, but you still have to abide by your home states laws when returning. Long guns are another story, you can buy a long gun in another state to take home, but it changes from state to state. Wally world used to have a map on the wall behind the gun counter that showed which states if you are a resident of you could buy a long gun. CWP has to be in your home state, then you can get a non resident in another state. If you have dual residency, and CWP, you might, and I stress the might, be able to purchase a hand gun in another state to keep at that residency. It will vary from state to state. You will need to check with the selling dealer. For carry jurisdictions and laws, check with https://www.usacarry.com/ but always double check with law enforcement in the are you are traveling thru.

There's an oft repeated story about a teacher from Va that was traveling through NJ on her way to her new home in Maine(?). She was stopped on the NJ Turnpike for a traffic violation and when the Trouper asked if he could search her car she gave permission thinking she had nothing to hide. He found her legal in Va. handgun in her trunk, with the bullets out of the gun and in a different bag, but she didn't have a gun permit for NJ. She was arrested and faced 5 years (mandatory sentence) in jail. From what I understand, since she was legal in Va to have the gun she was eventually able to plea bargain her way out of the jail time, but it cost her thousands of dollars in fines and legal fees.
Moral of the story... know the laws of the states you are traveling through, not just the state you will be in. It's far cheaper to have a dealer ship the gun to your home state.
