Water impeller install

I've done this before I'm just not 100 percent sure Ok this is the question when you install the impeller the ends have to bend in the housing this is what I'm not sure of Does the bend face the direction that it turns while in forward or does the bend face the other way, I'm not sure you understand what I'm saying But that's how I think I should word it I know you have to grease it up and turn the prop so the shaft turns and the impeller slides in Thanks for any come backs Thank god this site is up and running

I don't think it matters on initial install, just if you're putting a used one back in.

Why wouldn't it matter? You think it would correct it self ?

I think I read it somewhere. I've always installed it by rotating it the direction it will be turning when under power.

So to get it in the housing you put grease on the impeller grease on the inside of the housing and by hand turn the prop as if you would be going Forward as you press down on the housing on to the impeller then it slides down ? I think that's how, am I right?

yes....except I don't use grease, just twist it in...

The BRP factory instructions call for a small amount of triple guard grease for the install.

I like to use a small amount of medical lube (Like KY) Make sure you get the water soluble type that doesn't harm rubber. That way there's always plenty of lube to prevent any damage during the install, and it dissolves as soon as water hits it.

As far as the twisting goes, since the drive shaft always turns in the same direction whether going forward or reverse it really doesn't matter. Just twist the shaft in the proper direction that the engine turns in normally.

Hint: I like to observe my engine cranking to see what direction it's turning in, then I use an engraver to mark an arrow on the water pump housing pointing in the direction the shaft turns. That way I'm never confused about which direction to twist the shaft when installing a new impeller.

So what your saying is if I'm going forward or reverse the shaft only turns in one direction ? So buy turning the prop and sliding the impeller in the housing that's the only way it should go in, am I correct ?

Take note of the direction of the vanes when you remove the old impeller and install the new one the same. You definitely don't want it in there backwards as it could damage it or just not work.

Im pretty sure the vanes will flex and flip to the right direction when you crank the engine.

NO. I'm saying the drive shaft from the engine block only turns in one direction. The prop shaft can turn in two directions depending on what gear you are in. So if you turn the drive shaft in the proper direction then you'll always have your impeller vanes turning into the impeller housing in the proper direction.
