A week ago I changed the water pump on my Yamaha, today I started her up for the first time since doing the water pump and found that I have no forward or reverse... obviously I did something wrong when I reinstalled the lower unit. Someone told me that the shift should be in neutral when removing the lower unit, I remember having to put my Mercruiser in forward whenever dropping the lower unit

I don't know about yamahas but if I was you I would remove the lower unit again cause there has to be something that's not connected I'm guessing you will find it But if you wait I'm sure the heavy hitters will tell you I'm the meantime Remove the lower unit cause your going to have to do that anyway Good luck

HA! last year I helped my brother launch his bosses 23 cc. He backed me down the ramp, I slid off and he took off to take the trailer to his bosses house.....NO GEARS! He had just changed the impeller on the Yamaha....
Anyway, shift rod wasn't lined up right when he put it back together. Missed the connection entirely. We pulled the boat & fixed it in the parking lot

Skunk ,I can just imagine your surprise on that one! as you say I must have missed it entirely, after thinking about it all day it's the only thing it could be. I will say I never had a drive go back so easily. From what I remember of the mercruiser's I used to have to fight with them a little bit, this one just went rite up hahaha . just gotta wait for the rain to stop so I can get back to it and know for sure..

No rain today so I was able to drop the lower unit and found that I indeed missed the shaft !!!! Can't believe I did that . All is good now
