Went out a few days ago with my bud Jeff, initial launch of his sweet Maycraft 2550 PH for a little feesheen. His Brother Jay was along too. Had a good day, targeted flounder in Raritan Bay. Most of the boats around us were pulling sqautzola, we grabbed seven or eight nice keepers and a few throwbacks.
Had five different rods used that day and I will pass along a little gem I found out. Two Power Pro rods, one Berkley braid and one 10pd mono. Braids were all thin diameter green and clear. Caught a couple but the high rod that day with I think at least four if not five of the keepers was on my little St. Croix with 10lb Pline Floroclear on it. This is the Pline version for spinning reels and the stuff is tougher than sh!t and thin and I think most important of all it literally disappears in the water. It also casts like a dream. If you cut a little piece off and stick it in a glass of water you cant find it. Amazing and again I think it was the difference that day as we all had the exact same rigs and bait, plus they are probably better fisherman than I am. So keep it in mind if you are going to spool up a reel.
So here are some shots from the day.

Chumming with clams and commercial mix we get at Julians Bait Shop I stick in the chum pots. Bait was blood worms on the rigs.
I use the worms for winter flounder, I go with the killies and cut squid for the larger mouthed fluke. Usually I go one rod with a spro bucktail in a weight to suit the drift and a strip of cut squid and sometimes a stinger rig with a killie trailing off. The other rod I go with a standard two hook fluke rig and change baits depending on what they like that day. This year I will also try a rig I bought this winter at the fishing show for fluke, it has a two hook set up with a little cup like thing that gives it a great action. I have heard great reviews about it.
Oh and by the way Capt. Jeff above was out today and caught fluke on clams at Roamers Shoals both keepers, except the season has not opened yet :-/ He was targeting bass and caught a few but all shorts.
Supposedly they are seeing smaller bunker schools showing up in the bay. I remember last year we had bunker all summer, the bay was full of them, hard to catch fish when their bellies are gorged.

Pretty flounders Willy...no spots on that kind! Thanks for sharing your "secrets". ;)

I don't think we have that kind of flattie down here. Just the Summer and Southern flounders. :-/
