On the southeast coast from about west palm beach down to ft lauderdale, the atlantic drops off fairly quickly. In a few spots the gulf stream come right in close to shore, and at certain times of the year near west palm I believe it gets to within 3 miles of shore. The fish just ride the gulf stream, so it brings them right up close to shore.

Well the bonita (little tuny) always come in to the beach in the late summer, all the way up to Mass.

The Mahi here in Jersey are reliable at 75miles, worth a try at 40-60 miles, a nice surprise at 20 miles and a dumb luck event along the beach, but it happens. A guy caught a mahi off the end of Manasquan Inlet rocks last summer.

And in Florida, I love going to Pompano beach. That stretch from Boca down to Ft Lauderdale is great fishing, in close. You get sails, mahi, wahoo, blackfin, kingfish within three miles of the inlet. Swords at 15 miles... A 60+ mile run gets you to the Bahamas. Tarpon and snook inside, yellowtails and muttons on the reef.

yeah, we'll get the dolphin as near as 10-15 miles when conditions are right and the bonito pass through twice a season but picky as hell. they're a real trophy up here because they're so tough to get to bite. the dolphin, we get the chickens when shark fishing, up to a couple pounds and the rare 15 or 20 but not like down south.

Like Phat says we get that occasionally, when the green water pushes close getting to be that time of year too. Over toward Mexico beach it's pretty common, the continental shelf comes closest there.
