My question is this if your driving your boat and I have a 115 4 stroke Yamaha and the positive cable breaks contact at the battery shouldn't the motor stay running? The reason I'm asking is mine shut off,,, there was a loose positive connection At the battery end It's tight now Very tight

And if it should stay running why would cause it to shut down Thanks for any replys

most newer outboards require a battery to remain running.
if you look under the cowling and there is no emergency pull start rope, probably needs a battery

So phatdaddy it's not like a car , I know if you remove the cable from a car battery it will keep running as long as the alternator is charging On the yammy if you disconnect it the motor will shut down?

not true on all cars, so i'm not sure about all boat motors. i'm sure one of the brighter bulbs will come along. i do know the newer the motor, the more critical the battery charge and the cable size are.

The way it was once explained to me... and I stress that I DO NOT KNOW if this is correct or not... was that you should think of a battery as a sort of reservoir for the electricity that your alternator is making. Now your alternator is going to continue to make electricity as long as your engine is running.. but if you disconnect the battery all that electricity that would normally be stored in the battery has nowhere to go and you run the risk of burning out your diodes and other things. So as a safety feature if the battery is disconnected the engine will stop. Now, again, I don't know if that's true or not... it's simply something I was told a while back.

So I assume from what your telling me is that it's probably going to shut the motor down cause that's what happened I just want to be sure cause I did find a loose positive cable just wasn't sure if I needed to look for something else
