Big D MacG

Rivits and just a little MIG in the corners and I had to put some stiffness between the two side windows. 1/8 sides and front. 12 gauge for roof.

In your first video you didn't show the hose coming out of the jug and pumping oil all over the deck or you knocking the jug over while trying to get the still pumping hose back into the jug and it spilling it into the bilge.

I don't understand. :head::head::head::head::head:

Thin hose into engine and the other hose into a 4 liter jug. I don't know what you mean. Didn't spill a drop

Does anybody have thoughts on the look of having both the pilothouse and the radar arch on together. I am wondering to remove arch and mount rod holders to roof of pilot house. Opinions?

Destroyer
03-06-2017, 09:00 PM
My own personal preference would be to keep the arch. It provides a super strong place to mount the fishing poles, Radar, boat hook and whatever else you want to put on it. Why take a chance of bouncing poles and whatnot damaging the pilot house? That's an awesome job on the pilot house by the way. Really first class. Would love to have something like that on my V. Well done.:clap::clap:

Wow, nice work !

03-07-2017, 09:27 PM
That's some beautiful work. Just dreaming, I'd like to see the back opening gusseted enough to be really strong and stiff against lateral loads (maybe it's already that way since you obviously know what you're doing) and then do a welded rod holder setup and separate brackets for radar and whatever else you want on top. It looks like you pretty much have enough ledge all the way along the sides that it could be a walk-around - if that's true, a rail along the edge of the top would really make it work. One other thing I'd like would be sliding openable side windows - quick and easy comfort adjustment without messing with side curtains. Have I got it up to a $50,000 custom job yet?***129299;

bradford
03-07-2017, 10:35 PM
I'd keep the arch. Boat looks great. If you're thinking of doing another check out the design on Shamrock Mackinaw models, always liked their look.

My fishin buddy got a pair of sliders from a wrecked RV. I don't think he gave much for them - he went scrounging and got lucky I guess.

Big D MacG
03-09-2017, 06:51 AM
I hunted high and low for sliding windows, came close on a couple. I wedge the front door open if gets to hot. Would need sliders first and build pilot house around them. As it is the front is the full hight of a 4x8 sheet of aluminum. Also I was trying to find sliders with the slope of the front window. Custom-made windows were around $1,200. I almost sloped the window forward but made problems with the door swing.

Hello,

First time posting or replying I'm pretty new here. Signed up and got real busy at work so have not had a chance to be on much. I have 2 v20's an inboard v8 and a outboard 140 Suzuki. Not as much of a following here in Northern Ca but I do spot others from time to time.

Would you be interested in selling the pilot house or detailed plans if you have them? Great looking boat either way I have always wondered what it would look like done right

Welcome Pep.

Big D MacG
03-31-2017, 02:37 PM
I know I said earlier that I would be interested in selling pilothouse but when I add things up it would not be cheap. I built it by the seat of my pants with no plans. First off you need to find a good fab shop with a sheer and bender. I had a shop bend the front and both side for me and the bill was $700 not including the aluminium. I made him use the full width of the sheet for the front and then cut and bend the sides to match. Once I had the 3 pieces home I cut out the windows using a 5 inch hole saw to get the radius and a skill saw to cut the rest. The sides side pieces have 1 inch bends on all four sides and the front piece only folded on top and bottom. After cutting windows out I measured the holes and ordered tempered glass witch was cheaper. In the end I would just find a glass shop to cut safety glass, a little more money but fit the first time. The glass and rubber to mount glass was around $1000. They wanted around $700 to paint but found good deal on powder coating but was still $600. At this time I don't think I want to build another one. It was a good project and not all that hard to do if you have the time. Take the windshield off find a good sheetmetal shop and show them the pictures. Sheetmetal shop, powdercoat shop, glass shop and some upholstery work for the side windows.
My bill was.
$700 aluminum
$1000 glass and rubber
$600 powder coat
#700 sheetmetal shop
$300 hinges bolts and rivets
$200 upholstery
2 guys for 20hrs
I think it would be worth $5500

Big D MacG
03-31-2017, 02:39 PM
That's Canadian money. Canadian dollar only 70cent American

Big D MacG
03-31-2017, 02:53 PM
If I was going to do it again I would slope the windshield back a bit more and put a little more effort into the brim. I would also think of sloping the back in a bit at the bottom, looks to straight down, but I had a back curtain in mind. I also sealed l that front slidding hatch and it no longer moves, there is no way of stopping the water from coming into that hatch. This year I'm going to fiberfill it good and get rid of the wood sliders on the front. I saw a good ladder a guy made for getting out to the front that I also have plans for. Go ahead and build one,it makes the boat one of a kind. Lol or two of a kind.

Sorry for the late response back but this work thing is always getting in the way. That's pretty close to what I was thinking as far as the cost. I knew it wasn't cheap and the changes you mentioned will be helpful.
I think I will start getting the parts and wait until January to actually get it put on. I'm starting now to fish the SF bay and ocean until the fall then I hit the fall run stripers hard until the end of the year. Only thing I do from Jan. to March is the sturgeon but I can hitchhike on a buddies boat while mine is down.

Thanks again and keep me posted on any other changes or improvements you come across with the pilot house

Thanks for the pix.
Been daydreaming about that very thing for a while. I even got 3 pair of stainless heavy duty drawer slides from some scrapped cabinets at work. I like the way you routed the holes instead of one big hole with cabinet inserted. I have a cooler/bench seat blocking the bottom of that bulkhead though. Was thinking maybe have drawers inside the cuddy, sliding toward centerline.

just wondered, do the drawers have hold closed detents if so how did you do it ??

Big D MacG
05-14-2017, 08:22 AM
I picked up the drawer slides at Home Depot. They are the soft close type. They suck themselves in the last inch and a half. Feels like it should be enough tension to keep them close in rough water. I was thinking of putting some locks on the right side of the drawers. The RV style ones like on the glove box under steering wheel.

The owner of the photos/account can download them from their account at PB at anytime. No charge, no problems. You just can't use PB as a free hosting photo site anymore. :head:

(And I should probably keep my mouth shut but my PB account still works fine for some odd reason.)

PB has become so money hungry. I clicked on that link, saw the Pilot house boat. and while looking at the pics had 4 different pop up ads block the pics. That, on top of the 8 different ads surrounding the pics... plus the ads that were on top of other ads... Give me a break. PB is nothing more than click bait now. Disgusting.

this is the OEM builder for wellcraft. they have the exact replacement. shipping would probably eat u up. might be better to have one made locally.

Tempo has some poly tanks that are close, but not an exact fit.

as far as cost, I got one for $425-$450 4 years ago, now i think they are little over $500.

Pulled tank out and looks fine. Taking to be checked at tank shop. Bad smell of gas in boat but no gas in bilge. The fill house and vent hose looked good also. Found a couple loose clamps and think that might have been problem. Pulled tank for nothing. Changed fuel line to engine last year. Other than that boat is running good. Put 27hrs on it this weekend and ran some six foot waves home Saturday night. When I got to fuel dock a couple guys I passed on the way in complimented me on the way she rode and that they couldn't keep up.

Big D. I'm curious. What do you use for the Salmon? I fish Lake Ontario for Salmon with downriggers and J-plugs with rattles... Usually yellow/green or red/black or green/black. with and without bucktails. Curious what you use for Salmon on Lake Superior. What depth do you normally catch them at? :head:

Big D MacG
08-24-2018, 11:31 AM
It's been a slow season for me for salmon. Usually just 4 inch or 5 inch spoons no flasher. We use Dipsy divers too quite a bit. Have been catching them this year between 25 and 50 ft. Very slow this year.

Destroyer
08-24-2018, 06:03 PM
I usually use a flasher about 3 feet in front of the plug. Seems to work well. Agree on the slow this year. Most of our catches are around 40 feet. running 10lb downrigger fish shaped weights, no paint.

It's time to sell. Looking into something bigger. Asking $15000 CAN obo. She's in great shape. Selling with two Bigjon downriggers, new garmin chartplotter fishfinder, boat has washdown pump and hose. Boat has been great to me, many 35 mile runs fish all day and run back. Just change oil, did bottom end oil and greased, ready to go. Trailer in great shape also. Text 807 629 0944.
