Ok so most of you active members have seen my new new bright green project. Although the finish doesn't look bad, me and the wifey have come to the conclusion that she (the boat, not the wife) needs to be painted. I've looked into it and it seems the Awlcraft 2000 seems like a good product. I've watched a few videos on rolling and tipping and it seems to be a good way of doing it.

If I have the ability and equipment to spray the hull would that be a better route than rolling and tipping? I've painted plenty of cars so laying down a nice smooth coat shouldn't be a problem. So what are advantages to rolling and tipping.

Also does anyone know approximately how much paint I'd need. It's basically just from the water line to the gunwale that would need painted. Thanks for your input.

If you have the equipment and ability to spray her I would go that route. Most likely will have the best looking results especially since you've done it before.

Rolling and tipping is good if you don't want to strip off the trim etc or tape everything. Takes 2 people who kinda know what they're both doing/thinking in my opinion.

Well I just read somewhere that you can't roll and tip Awlcraft 2000 anyways. Also read it is an Acrylic Urethane paint as well. I've painted cars with Acrylic Urethane I've gotten mixed at my local NAPA. Reckon it's the same paint? Much cheaper at NAPA. I know it's something I don't want to skimp on but I also know put 2 identical things in boxes and slap a MARINE sticker on one of them and you'll get charged twice as much.

The roll and tip method seems fair and easy to do but i have heard and seen a few horror stories...its not as easy as it looks. Just my opinion spraying the paint just gives you such a better job.

BLACK!!! its more work but at least it will be BLACK

black looks so good on boats and not many black ones out there so they stand out without standing out

I've considered black. It'd be beautiful. Just gotta talk the wifey into it. She's thinking a light gray.

That's what I was thinking - a black car looks good for about a week until it scratches. I don't want to have to baby my boat.

Yea we discussed it a little tonight and blacks out of the question. She said the same thing, any imperfection will show. Looking like its gonna be a light pewter color. I think it'll have a slick, clean look.

Hey Skunkboat, was checking out your videos. In the Striper 2015 video I saw a USS Briscoe hat. My dad was on the Briscoe for many years when she was in Norfolk. I spent a lot of time on that boat when I was a kid. Pretty cool to see a Briscoe vet.

Summer sun + Black paint = HEAT!!!!! DON'T DO IT!!!. There's a reason boats are made with white as the number one color. If you must paint the boat I'd go with a light color.. like a lime green for instance.

TMC Rose ring a bell? He was on her 88-91. Actually he may have been PO1 until after you left. I don't think he made TMC until right before he left in 91.

i dont think painting the outer hull black, or any other dark color would make it hot. the deck or interior surfaces yea, that would burn your *** up but the exterior... dont think it would make any difference at all.

black would be a lot of work, both to paint it and to maintain it. but i think it would look awesome on that v20 flare. i would love to see one.

i think in 2015 seahunt introduced their new pewter color. it looks good. and one of the builders, cant remember which one, just introduced a sharkskin grey color that i thought was pretty sharp

all i know is black is beautiful, yall are racist

Don't recall any Torpedoman named Rose. Maybe he changed rates. There was a GMM1/GMC Rose. He worked on ASROC. A real character. Called everyone "dick bump"... gruff but with a wink & a smile

I'm pretty sure he was on ASROC. I'll have to ask him tomorrow. He's the kinda of guy that would of called everyone "dick bump". He told me he wasn't the most liked guy aboard.

I showed him your videos and he was naming guys off left and right. He was on her for the Unitas tour. He said he recognized you. Thought you were a Fire Controlman 2nd Class. Sound right?

I just text him and he was a Torpedoman his whole career. But he knows the GMC you're talking about. Thinks his name was Bill. My dads name is Tom.

ASROC = Anti-Submarine ROCket. Basically a Mk 44 or Mk 46 special weapon torpedo, fired from a Destroyer, that flies thru the air for up to 5 miles, parachutes into the water on top of a sub, uses active homing technology to home in on the sub and destroy it.
