Teak restoration project

After getting the V20 and looking at a lot of pictures of other V20's, I really liked the look of the teak trim and accent pieces. Only problem was all my teak was in horrible shape (from the Cuddy door back) - really gray and scuffed.

I began sanding quite some time ago... got most of the pieces ready to go. I chose Sikkens Cetol Marine and laid down my first coat yesterday. I am really excited to get home from work and see how the first coat looks all dry - it looked amazing just after applying the first coat.

Here's all the pieces prepped and the beginning.

Did you gloss after the 3 coats? That's the one thing wife and I are back and forth over. To gloss, or not to gloss?

Yes, I think the high gloss holds up better. Also seems to clean up better.

Kinda like when I refinished my wood floors. My theory is the high gloss will eventually turn to semi-gloss and then flat gloss, it just takes 3 times as long.

One trick I learned is take some toothpicks and dip them in epoxy and stick them in your screw holes and let dry, then cut flush with your side cutters. This gives the worn out screw holes some new "meat" to screw to.

Looks great! I'm back and forth on removing all my teak, love the look, but always seem too busy to keep it up. A lot of mine is looking like old lady toenails right now. Might give the cetol a try.

I am a no Fuss guy!! I removed all my teak on the last two boats and replaced with starboard.
I like the look of teak but not the upkeep!

You know, I wondered what those pieces were for a while... then my wife's uncle told me on the maiden voyage that they were seats for either side of the engine cover (got the boat from her grandfather). i don't have a picture with them in, but here's a pic of the support rails on either side to hold them. When it's all finished, I'll post pics of it all setup.

So I just got around to finishing the last round of the first coat of Sikkens. Wow, the difference in the color after coat 1... I took these pics of the swim platform - which is obviously in the sun 24/7 for almost 30 years,,, and the other of a seat that has been either covered or thrown in the cuddy for the same amount of time. Look at the difference!!! WOW!!

jjuriga what one did you use sickens cetol marine natural? or sickens cetol marine,or sickens cetol marine light? are you going to go over it with the gloss? reason I am asking I just got a solid teak ice chest. cleaning and bleaching, then I will sand it all down, then refinish. cant wait to finish will be great down on my dock this summer!!:happy:

Believe it or not, I used Cetol Marine Natural Teak... and all the pics have been taken after one of the three coats. I just got done sanding with 600 grit and fixin to blow out the second coat. Don't worry, I'll post plenty of pics!

Very cool teak chest!!! I didn't bleach or use stripper, just sanded the hell out of it- 50 > 80 > 120 > 220. FUN!!! Is the chest for your boat or backyard??

I will use the chest down on my dock in the summer to keep all the adult beverages ice cold!!!!! I think I am also going to use the natural. where did you order yours from? I saw it on Jamestown marine.

FWIW, for I use Cetol Satin Light over natural teak stain for all surfaces except the floor hatches, gunnel step pads, & cleat bottoms, which I just stain and oil once a year. I've only had to redo the Cetol-covered surfaces once in 15 years: http://www.wellcraftv20.com/gallery/album06/L

Quick update... nearing the end. This is the only piece I had to sand & oil on the boat. Ready to gloss all pieces before putting back on the boat.

Everything got 3 coats of Sikkens Cetol Natural Teak. Now for a quick coat or two of Cetol Marine Gloss!

Do not paint any teak that you step on, it's too slick.

I'm surprised y'all like cetol so well, I pretty much hate the crap, it's yellow, it peels, & doesn't last very long in the sun.

When I want a high gloss finish I use Epifanes, it's expensive but worth it.

Just redid the teak in my project boat & used 3 coats of polyurethane, looks great, have to see how it holds up.

ive had good luck with ceatol, the two times ive used it. all about the prep. gotta sand down to pure wood getting rid of ALL of the old finish and gotta time your coats just like the directions say. thats what i was taught and thats what i did. came out nice and held up well. never used the gloss though
