Rod Box repair...

So I'm in the middle of restoring all the teak and anything else I can get my hands on in the process, because why not, right?

Took out my rod boxes, whoa!! They're in terrible shape. Cracks and holes... can I patch these with anything? They seem to be plastic, am I correct? I think they're the original ones.

I took a pretty good look around, checked out some others posts that showed off new shiny ones, but I prefer the look of the original with the teak trim - so I'd like to restore or replace with other originals.

Looks like Marinetex is the way to go for rebuilding the corners n cracks. Anyone love it - or hate it??

I've found marine tex better for filling gouges, or screw holes. I would think some fiber glass cloth or mat on the parts of the boxes that fit inside the gunnels would do a decent job. Sand and re paint, then re install with the cleaned and oiled teak or varnished if you don't mind redoing it every year or so.

If you want to save yourself a whole lot of trouble, Flounder Pounder sells them new. Might be worth it depending on how flimsy they are. Also a few on here have built their own and have come out really nice.

mine were in pretty bad shape also. mostly cracks along the flange that screwed to the gunnells. i roughed up the backside with some 100 grit and laid down a 2 inch piece of fiberglass tape along the flange. after that set up, i used marine tex to fill in the exposed crackes on the front side.

the flange is so thin and the gunnell is also so i ran a piece of 1x2 pt pine around the inside of the opening in the cap. this gave the inserts some "meat" to hold to. works well, the boxes don't flex as much and has held up well.

If your not into mixed up batches of resin this stuff works great for small jobs.
However if you need a lot
of resin it's more cost effective to buy bulk and mix yourself.

Thanks for the suggestions... I think I'm going to get the tape for the underside and use Marine Tex on the cracks, along with a sand n paint.

Does anyone have a favorite type of paint, best used for these rod holders?

Yea man, I took at the new ones, but not a fan for some reason. I did look through the posts with custom ones, very cool!!

I've used rustoleum topside marine paint and like it. Read somewhere its the exact same as pettit easypoxy which costs about 3 times more. About 14 bucks a quart at home depot.

I honestly like Blue Runner's suggestion better though, and I would think the results might even look better if you do a half way decent job prepping.

I completely agree. I use the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) formula always. Krylon for plastic is great paint... I've used it for Resin outdoor furniture, Boat parts, and a ton of other things... It adheres well and lasts several years.

Me too - I've repaired those plastic rod holders on my V21 a few times.

Krylon paint - white. I tried to get fancy with slight off white, result looked green.
Did it over with the white.

I don't really use these alleged rod holders, but since standard equipment, I repaired and re installed.

gotta agree with you bg, not the best way to store a rod. when i repainted my boxes, i used the "fat" ends in one side and added some teak strips. makes a great shelf for mask, fins, watershoes, etc.

i stuck the "skinny" sides on the other side and store gaffs and nets in it.

I am having a hard time deciding what color to finish them with!! Here's a snapshot of old sitting side by side with the all white.

HELP!!! What color?? I say the original tan, wife says off-white. They are semi-gloss white in the pic. Keep in mind I have light blue LED strips to illuminate them... even though they wont be lit up a lot.

If you are looking to replace the teak in your rod boxes, you can always have some one cut you a new piece out of starboard. There are a few people on the internet that can. Honestly, as long as the old teak isnt rotting you can hit it with a sander and give it some new life. You would be suprised how well it can look again. Now, if you are wanting to replace the actual insert, FP marine has some really nice ones. If you live out of the area they charge way too much for shipping... They quoted me 180 to ship two of the inserts to Jax, FL! So for 40 bucks in gas I drove down to pic them up. You can always repair them and repaint. That old thermo plastic isnt the best at holding up to repairs. Or if you are really good with fiberglass, you can use the old ones as a mold... It would be time consuming, but the only way I've found to get new ones, if you cant find a direct replacement.

Good question!! I'm not sure if they're going to stay blue, not sold on it. Wife loves it.
