Splicing new Evinrude controls to pre 96' cable

I have a pontoon boat with an 80's Evinrude 115 and I need new controls. I'm trying to avoid buying the new cable/adapter and i'd like splice the new 96+ controls in. I don't have a system check gauge so no issue there.

Can this be done? I realize the wires are not color matched. But it seems doable.

I would think you could buy an adapter and plug n play.

I can, but the cheapest I'm finding one is in the $200 range. I'd rather put that money into other accessories for the boat if I have the option.

Well, I was quite surprised at how easy it was, considering the lack of information online and the amount of people I found recommending just buying the cable. It took maybe an hour to install the controls and wiring was straightforward.
