Local guy is looking to trade a 140 evinrude (year?) 'cause he got the wrong shaft length. (kills me how many guys do that) I have a 25" foot & mid off an 1988 225 sitting out here, I know they cross with several models, but need more specific info please.

What exactly are you looking to do here? Also MUST know the year of the engines involved. The 88 lower unit CAN be bolted onto a 140 IF it's a looper, BUT the gear ratios are different. A V-6 uses a 1.86:1 gear ratio whereas the V-4's with the large gearcase used a 2.25:1 gear ratio. The V-4 gear case used a 2:1 ratio. IF you bolt a 1.86: ratio onto a stock 140 looper, it will be one DOGGY engine, also you will have to run some LOW pitched props to make it do much of anything. As to bolting a V-4 looper onto a V-6 mid section, it can also be done, but the engine adapter housing at the top is different from a V-4 to a V-6, and trying to swap them out is MUCh easier said than done.

Thanks Ferm, I was just looking to see if I could sell my foot & mid, but looks like a bad idea. Should have realized the gear ratio's would be different.
