not sure on the 88, but i know on the 93-94, you have to take the starboard side of the engine mounting bracket off to pull the trim assy. haven't tried to change just the motor assy.

It's just the motor I need to replace not sure how to do it. I dont think it's to hardm just don't know if I have to separate the base of the motor to put it on
There is two bolts that hold the base on

I broke the bolts off on mine upon taking apart. Fished the broken bolts out and went with a cheap aftermarket motor. So far it is working great. I did have to remove the entire trim assembly which requires you remove the starboard side bracket. PITA actually. It was a solid 6 on a ten scale in my book. Your supposed to have a special tool that holds the motor because it does get a little shaky once the bracket is free. I was working a 250 EFI with the 3 ram type trim and tilt. They are nearly all the same. It looks like you could get to both bolts without removing the bracket but I was not so lucky. LOL!

Was it hard to replace the motor once you got to it?

I did it on my yamaha, same thing you had to take the side off. Was a bit tricky but after getting the side off, it went pretty easy!
Good luck!

Not hard at all. Simple coupling, two wires in my case. Yours may have three wires. Straight forward repair until you torque the heads off those little bolts.
