I thought Id start one for us to share out stories this season!
Bow season opens in two weeks here so Im yet to "hunt" but been getting a lot of time in the woods. Planting, hanging stands, etc... I seen a bunch of deer on our fields Friday when I got to the lease. Didn't disturb them just check cameras and such. I managed to get two turkey egg killing bastages out of the way. 427 more to go.
http://i.imgur.com/9sWIugwl.jpg
This year looks really promising from photos and encounters with deer and turkeys so far. This is a new lease Ive got with two buddies and we are all pretty pumped. One is my best friend and the other is a close friend of ours also. We are the only 3 on the 400 acres and theres about 2000 acres of rarely hunted national forest around us. Praying for a great year and hope all yall have one as well!
Runs Oct 25th to Feb 10 here, come on cold weather!

Good luck!! My new Bear is in the mail as we speak....Guess I can join the brotherhood now huh?!
My old PSE has the same sight as yours I kinda wish the new one did as well vs. this 5-pin.....It can be a little tricky on an approaching victim but man is it easy to line up w/o all the crap in the way....

The Legion.....I know I shoulda "flicked the release" on the Anarchy but it was twice as much and Im only upgrading from a mid-90's PSE...lol
My buddy was sponsored by Bear for several years and said you cant go wrong with any model so Im givin it a shot.

You wont regret it. I shot all the big names before I bought my Attack (the flag ship 5 years ago when I got it) and walked away with a Bear. Its the most dead in the hand bow Ive ever owned and deadly quiet.
My last 4 bows have been Bear. Their customer service is amazing as well. Just had the second set of limbs put on mine due to Bass pro shops' "tech" messing them up. Bear handled it no questioned asked.

Sired Im not doubting you know your property well but are you sure on the count?
Yotes are THICK here.
ssiredfish
11-03-2014, 08:32 AM
Yea, these are the "dumb" yotes. I get others that show up from time to time that run the swamp edge but they dont hang around like these are/were. We have a large generation of Poults runnin around right now and thats what they were keen on and couldnt leave them alone.
Before we finally caught up with the one they had killed two poults and one fawn........unacceptable behavior. I dont mind a passerby but just dont hang around and start killin off my game.
Stinky_Hooker
11-05-2014, 09:28 AM
I gotcha, didnt know how thick they were there. There are pretty bad here in certain places.
This weekend was nice as far as weather, seen a few deer but out of range as usual. Its taking some time to learn this new property and key in on deer without getting too close and getting busted.
Friday evening from a blind I sat up on the gas line in a food plot.

This was a spot I hunted saturday overlooking a swamp crossing. I really like swamps and its ate up with tracks from them skirting the edge of it.

Well it took me a few weeks but I finally got keyed in on the deer movement a little better. Seen about 10 saturday between daylight and 12. I made my move around 130 to get closer to where they were crossing in a food plot. It paid off and smoked a nannerhead at 48 yards about 4pm. Not a huge one but the only one in range. Gun opens next weekend so there will be some bodies on the ground by 8am on the 21st.
Here my doe, she was only about 70lbs but fine eating.

I also decided after hearing some good things to try the heart for the first time. I slow cooked it with some tenderloin last night and other than the texture I swear you couldnt tell a difference. It was awesome. I cant believe I been throwing them out all my life!

Nice to se you boys putting a hurting on nuisance coyotes I haven't been out for them yet. My buddy Steve got himself a nice buck with his late grandfathers rifle. That poor buck almost walked over top of Steve if it wasn't for a 30-06 165Gr accu bond he might have. The buck just came walking down his scrape line Steve crouched down behind a willow bush and watched him walk up to 15 yards. Kalum and I got a big cow moose last Saturday the boy was extremely excited he spotted it and my 270 130Gr Barns xxx finished it. He has been telling everyone about it if they wanted to hear it or not lol. It was about a 140 yard head shot down a overgrown cut line. Had another great father son day for him to remember.

Well done on the Woodies, people that dont hunt them or see them fly have no idea what an accomplishment a bag like that is. They are FAST, squirrely and hard to hit. There is a pile of them that fly over me every morning in a stand on our gas line and I need to have a shoot one day. We have a swamp they roost in and they come over LOW out of that swamp. Didn't see a Hoyt bow mentioned in the thread. My son's been shooting one of these and is trying to talk me into going in with him on it. I've been thinking about doing some bow shooting and out here in Oregon, the bow season is way longer than rifle season. Anyone have any experience with a Hoyt Charger?
EngstromNK
04-15-2015, 08:02 AM
Three years ago I was looking at the Charger and the Spyder (aluminum riser) and I was much more impressed with the Spyder. It was smoother and quieter at the time. Over the past 5 years most of my hunting buddies have made the switch over to Hoyt because of the quality of the product.
I was lucky enough to be demolishing a house at the time and was able to salvage enough scrap brass & copper to pay for the bow.

You Guys are doing it right, raised my family on Pheasant, Chukar, Grouse Turkey and especially venison. To the tune of four to six Deer a year.
This year I went to hunt with my family on their land in upper Michigan. Did not see a legal Buck the first two years and Does everywhere.
This year after the three biggest Bucks on the land were taken by family during Bow season I decided if it's a legal buck "if it's brown it's down.
Off hand 80 yards while moving to a different spot, saw him before he saw me.

Nice buck Willy. I got two this year and haven't been back. Got an 8 with a nice symetrical rack and another ? pt with a big 4-by right side and funky under developed left side. He was a 165 lber. Actually the day before I hunted that morning and had him come in before shooting light.
I waited patiently for more light and thought I had enough so I let her rip. The next 2 hours would prove I totally missed as I found zero blood or sign. I thought since I educated that deer I'd never see him again. Lucky for me it was the middle of rut and this guy was not paying attention in class the previous morning LOL. Wish I could post pics. I will eventually when I get around to buying a laptop.

I took a small 5x5 bull elk at 25 yards with my bow on Friday with my father calling for me. It came in silently and gave me a broadside shot the rage broadhead did its job perfectly. I double lunged him and had a 200 yard recovery. I'm trying to upload a picture but it wont let me.

Took a big bull moose today at 25 yards one shot with my Mathews and five steps later he's doing the O'l drunk dance and over he goes into 6"of chilly water. I took off three days at the end of bow season for moose and I get a 43" bull an hour into it my biggest to date. I also got luck last Sunday when I took my boy out grouse hunting we run into a red/brown colour phase black bear that's going to make a beautiful wall rug and pepperoni. Tool kalum out last Sunday for a whitetail hunt. It was a beautiful foggy day down along the river see lots of does and fawns. As we came into another field we spotted three bucks feeding and sparing together. A short stock put us within two hundred yards. A double lung shot from the .243 put him down in under fifty yards there was a little ground shrinkage due to the fog but still a very respectable buck from around here.

I think the only tension for him was that a five year quest to arrow a big bull moose was over. Norm is Alberta’s provincial archery champion the last few years running. He can consistently hit a target over 100 yards me not so much lol.

It does my heart good to see you guys and your kids/grand kids getting started hunting and fishing. My dad did his best but it wasn’t much and I didn’t get my son going early - we’re working together now to correct that.
The poor guy planned a bow elk hunt and ended up on the couch, sick as a dog for his entire vacation and I’ve been laid up with the worst cold I can remember for a couple of weeks. But tonight we spent some time in the shop installing a new scope on my rifle. We’ve got a good one for his rifle as soon as he comes up with the right rings.
Hopefully this year or next, we’ll have something to post.

my daughter and I continue to be involved with The Outdoor Dream Foundation. As many of you know, Kendall is a cancer survivor and was adopted by the ODF a couple years ago. We've participated in 5 hunts and one fishing tournament with them. Kendall has yet to take a deer, but she's got one gator under her belt so far. The ODF is having their annual fishing tournament in Georgetown SC on the 8th. Following the tournament, they are having the Low Country banquet and auction fundraiser that evening. We hope to get another deer hunt soon, meanwhile we've been invited to a Pronghorn hunt in Wyoming the week of October 10th. ODF is flying us both out and handling all our equipment for the hunt. I'll post up pictures when we get back( I have to open a hosting site since Photobucket went to crap). Meanwhile, be sure to check out The Outdoor Dream Foundation http://outdoordream.org/ . Check out their TV show on Sunday morning, who knows, we might make it on there.
And when I can post pictures, one of my good friends took a 10 point atypical last Monday evening, his first on his new property, he scored it at 169

I never duck hunted. Looks like fun.
I moved to the Lowcountry 30+ years ago. Started hunting deer, dove, pheasant and duck. I really only took up duck hunting because I had a Lab and wanted to see what he would do, and he LOVED it. It's so cool to see good breeding and instincts kick in. Loss of land/habitat since then and I stopped hunting altogether until a friend hooked me up with a nice place to hunt ducks, so for the last several years we've hunted, some seasons great, some not so great. (And a friend gives me venison occasionally.)
Mornings in the duck blind: hardly any place I'd rather be. My old Browning A500 serves me well, none of those lightweight shotguns that the younger (and more serious) guys use. And duck can be mighty tasty.

Our SCDNR has a program called take one, make one. Not just kids, but anyone that wants to get involved in hunting. They do shooting classes, hunting classes. Have different groups get together(Veterans, women, kids, etc...) they also overlap with special hunting groups like Outdoor Dream foundation(my daughters thread is on here somewhere). If nothing else, it got me interested in hunting. My cousin is a SCDNR officer and now doing shotgun clinics with kids. Now if I could just get a decent lease within an hour of my house.

Been off the site for quite a while - password problems. It's good to be back and see that things are still percolating along with you all.
Went to eastern Oregon for a guided cow elk hunt and between my son, a friend and I, we got two nice cows. Would have had three, but my son's rifle wasn't shooting accurately, so he declined to take a 300+ yd shot - he made a 200 yd head shot to put one down that our friend had a round in. His rifle is going off to get a good stock fitted - hopefully that will fix the problem.
I haven't hunted big game for ages and was surprised at how different field shooting is from the range. I got down with my new bipod and found the grass completely blocking my shot - I've got some work to do to get prepared for the next trip.
Another surprise was how tender the meat is. Beef round steak is usually pretty tough, but the elk has been really tender. Not a lot of flavor, but a little garlic powder and other stuff takes care of that.

My last duck hunt, which didn’t involve any duck hunting was back in the 1960’s in college. Did quite a bit of sub par trap shooting and went out one day with a buddy and my soon to be wife - I was in the lead, dropped down into a dry stream bed and was looking a skunk straight in the eye. No duck and probably no jet launched off of a carrier ever took off as fast as I did getting back up that bank.
There are so many people, unfortunately way too many of them are idiots, hunting out here now that finding a decent and reasonably safe place to hunt is a challenge.
Glad you got some in this season.

I don't hunt any public land. There are too many people, and some of them will sabotage your hunt, your boat, your truck... I am fortunate enough to get to hunt a private impoundment a few times a season with a great group of guys. If that weren't the case I wouldn't be hunting.

Private land is definitely the way to go. Our elk trip was a guided hunt - a young guy has a hunting lease on 21,000 acres of ranch land in central Oregon. It made the meat a little expensive, but it was an enjoyable time, plenty of hard work and cold toes, but still worth it.
I need to check in with an old friend who has had arrangements with some ranchers in the past and see if he’s still good with some of that.
