Played hooky from work today and went out on a friends 28' Parker CC. *We headed out to Montauk from Mystic, CT departing around 6 am looking for fluke.
New twin Suzuki 250's. *One of them was losing power above 4000 rpm.....not happy as they are brand new.
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/whalenkm/PICT4342.jpg
Ran into this on the way. *We live near a Naval Sub base.
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/whalenkm/PICT4344.jpg
Our primary target. *We did not do great on fluke. *A fair number of shorts. *This was the biggest at just over 21" *We took home 6 fluke between 3 guys.
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/whalenkm/PICT4350.jpg
I lucked into this very nice Sea Bass.
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/whalenkm/PICT4346.jpg
And FINALLY..........just about ready to head back we saw a flurry of bird activity and zipped over there. *My other buddy threw out a popper and hooked into a blue right away. *I had very few lures so just stuck on a Kastmaster and let her go. *First cast I got hit hard with the lightest rod I had on the trip. *This fish took a lot of line but after about 10 minutes I finally landed her. *A nice 32" striper!!!!
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/whalenkm/PICT4349.jpg
This was a big day for me......my first ever keeper striper......amazingly my first ever fluke......and a nice Sea Bass. *Caught lots of flounder as a kid but the winter variety.....never fluke. *Great fun and better than work any time!
Forgot....the 7 species were fluke, sea bass, striper, blue, sea robin, skate, and dogfish....

Yeah....nice ride out there. *The boat actually belongs to some Dr. from NJ who has a vacation house up here. *Obviously has money to burn. *My buddy takes care of the boat for him....gets it ready when the Dr. is coming up to fish etc etc. *He gets paid and gets use of the boat. It had twin Yamaha's I think that were not too old (hull is a 2000) but dropped almost $40k on the new 250's.

Thanks BR....that is just a side job for him. He works full time with me.
They were burning about 10 gph each at 4000 rpm. We did not get any higher than that for reasons stated above.

Scott
Scott......it is not my boat. See above for an explanation but it belongs to some rich doctor with money to burn on new motors every few years I guess. We ran at 4000 rpm for the day and the boat will be heading in for service this weekend. This was the first trip out where he tried to take the motors up over 4000. He ran at 3100 for the specified time then yesterday went up to 4000 but never tried more than that. When he tried to go over it would drop to 3400 and then go up and down between 3400 and 4200 rpm.

Had a Little League game to go to last night so fish is for dinner tonight.
Since I caught the sea bass by accident, what do you use when targeting them specifically?

There is a spot, off the coast of DE,
someplace between De and New Jersey,
where you can catch more Sea Bass than you know what to do with.
I went on a family charter trip a few years ago
and we weren't catching squat.
The captain made a few cellphone calls,
said pull in the rods boys
and next thing we were flying to another spot.
He checked the fish screen and said drop the lines.
Till we were done, we pulled in 60 keepers.
I wish I had his cellphone numbers.

We would alway catch them why drifitng for Fluke, squid or Mommies (Killies for you New Yorkers)
Targetting them specifically you want some structure and a high/low type rig. Like a altered fluke rig with out all the bells and whistles. 4/0ish hook and you are good to go.

Actually, I think sea bass will bite anything.
That particular day we used squid strips.
