View Full Version : VRO pump replacement with standard fuel pump (a How To)

This is how to remove the old VRO oil injection and replace with a standard old school Johnson fuel pump. The VRO system on my boat has long since been disconnected and I premix fuel which IMO (EVERY VRO motor not under warranty should be but thats another issue).However even without use of the VRO oil injection feature its still acts as the fuel pump. It developed a fuel leak so rather than rebuild or replace the expensive (non needed) VRO I replaced with a standard fuel pump. you will need the 3 outlet pump for this. It has a the standard fuel in and fuel out connections as well as a third for the crank case vacuum line to hook too. I ordered a used but almost new unit off fleabay for about $50 as oposed to several hundred for a VRO replacement.

Comparison in size between the old and replacement. The weight reduction should add ~~30mph alone.

If its not obvious the gas "IN" from the fuel tank goes on the outer black connection and the brass one in the middle goes to carbs.

I also took the stainless VRO mounting bracket and made a new mount for the new pump to be secured to but forgot to get a pic.

Keep in mind this ONLY works on the old 3 cylinder loop charged engines, and the older cross flow engines. The newer loopers WILL starve for fuel with this style pump as the new loopers don't have enough crankcase pressure differential to make them work at higher RPM's. I tried it on my 140, and made it almost on plane before it ran out of fuel. It would pump ALOT of fuel at idle, but open the throttle and it would stop pumping. I hooked up an electric fuel pump and ran the engien at different RPM's and you could watch it stop pumping at anything over 4000 or so.

Quite a few loopers have been burnt up by people trying to swap in the old style pumps to the loopers and starved em under load.

nope mine still has vro pump in its just bypassed. it has oil line blocked off and plug disconnected. lol not that I matters now

Good to know ferm thanks. I haven't ran it in the water yet so i hope it works out ok. I saved the old vro just in case i have to rebuild it ams use it instead.

The 3 cylinder loopers work just fine with the old style pumps, it's the V-4's and up that wouldn't work with them. I even tried 2 of them on my 140 and it wouldn't keep up. The only thing you MIGHT have to do is raise the float levels a 1/16" or so. Teh VRO pumps run about 5-6 PSI VS the old style pumps 2.5-4 PSI.

Ferm, i ran that style pump on my 120 for about a year before I sold it, best of my knowledge its still running the same set up(saw it at a shop a little over two years ago).I put a fuel pressure gauge on the motor and maintained around 2 psi(cheap vacuum/pressure gauge) at wot. I don't know why your set up didn't work and mine did, but I've seen where you've mentioned it several times. On that line of thinking I figured a mercury v6 pump should work just fine in this application. The Mercs are loopers and the single pump supplies more than enough fuel for a 200. I've wondered if the johnrude pump is enough considering they ran more than one on the cross flow V6 motors,The merc pump should be the way to go. Stink, when your done, hook up a fuel pressure gauge and run it to make sure its enough

I know my 140 fell flat on it's face with one. I put the same pump on a 70 EVINRUDE and it held 4 PSI no problem at WOT. My 140 was in good shape to as I had just freshened it up and it had 145 PSI of compression in it when I did it. I have also wondered if the MERCURY pump would work as it is pretty small and feeds a big engine. Or the YAMAHA pumps that looked just like the OMC. Then again my 250 YAMAHA had 3 pumps on it.
