Hey Oz and Skools and whoever else in the area like Blue, if you like to hunt and fish, and you wanted to move to North Carolina where would you move. We love the ocean but are worried about canes and being to close and we love mountains but don't want to end up with full winter type crap again.
I guess what I am asking is where in the state would you move if you had your pick?

reelapeelin
03-11-2006, 11:20 AM
Skruu the canes...NC coast for sure...big town?...go to Wilmington...Beaufort NC...go visit and you won't have to decide...it'll be a no-brainer... ;) 8)...take your V20 and cruise the inland waters and close- shore out to Cape Lookout...you might not go back to Jersey to get your stuff!!...Pubah will be up visitin' YOU and you can let him swim your boat around... ::) ;D ;D ;D...

willy

And what about you Skools ???

Skools Out
03-11-2006, 01:09 PM
LOVE IT HERE 100000000%, Best place to live is here, i've been in 38 different states and the Carolina's has them all beat. Super fishing at out beach's and super hunting in the whole state. From where i live i can be in the mountains or beach's in 2 1/2 hours. RAP is right ifyou were to goto Beaufort NC you'd never leave. It's a quant little drinking town with a fishing problem lol. Swansboro just down the raod is same way. My place is inthe middle of those 2 at Emerald Isle. It's another great fishing area. Love it come down Willy. Willy it rarly snows either and if you want snow just ride to the NC mountains.

willy
03-11-2006, 03:23 PM
Thanks guys, what about the hunting in that area, I run bird dogs and deer hunt . Trying to talk the CEO into moving out if I put my papers in and retire from PD. She works for ATT and would need to find a job down there and so would I. One kid in Penn State now (phew) and three to go.

Skools Out
03-11-2006, 08:21 PM
hunting's great of all types and you would make most money near RTP near Raleigh

willy
03-12-2006, 01:13 AM
The triangle your referring to right. It is still listed as the best or one of the best places to live in the country.
I kind of like going down now and looking for property, and moving down later.

reelapeelin
03-13-2006, 11:49 AM
Spent some time at RTP testing at Underwriters Laboratories...Cary NC nice, but controlled & hi-$$$...all good area, but still way inland...not where I THINK a guy would be lookin' to retire close to some great fishin'...go COASTAL, Willy ;) ;D ;D...

Blue_Runner
03-13-2006, 12:59 PM
Only problem with Beaufort, emerald Isle, wrightsville and wilmington is they are getting to be so darn expensive! Everything has went up soooo much in the past 5 years. I've been looking down around Southport between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach. Less developed and you can still get some good deals IMHO.

Skools Out
03-13-2006, 01:05 PM
Hey a great still affordable coastal location is Harker's Island near Beaufort NC. that's where they build tons of Carolina Hull boats. Parker, Jarrett Bay and many others out there.

reelapeelin
03-13-2006, 01:25 PM
Willy, look around in Calabash, Sun Set Beach, Ocean Isle area while you're down there... ;)...check out Ocean Isle Fishing Center on left just over bridge... 8) 8) 8)...go on their web site (I don't have it so you'll have to Google) and check out Capt Brant's reports...

willy
03-13-2006, 02:46 PM
Thanks for all the info guys, I must admit I am really torn. My wife and I have been in the western part a few times with the kids, camping and such, Pisgah the Smokes and I (we) just love it. The mountains always make me smile. But I also love the boating and fishing, not just the salt either. Big fresh water lakes always catch my eye. So I am torn, maybe I can find the big inland lake with property on the water and hills all around and buy a small place down the shore to rent out and visit during the summers. Now there is a plan. ;D What is the big inland lake area or what is the best fishing inland lake in the state

Franco I'm telling the wife Fla. and she is saying Canes, I can't get her mind comfy with it. I'm even telling her she won't have to go back to work and it's not working. I'm holding on to what might be the clincher though I've got that 8x10 color glossy of you. Thats my hold card what ya think ;)

I live in Beaufort and I would guess you would have to rate it an 8 with the Keys and Costa Rica Being 9's or 10's from the fishing end which is about as good as it gets in the old USA my opinion and you dont have to go out very far. Last year we had big smoker kings and dolphin just about a mile out of the inlet , big cobia in the shipping channel and turning basin and I saw a couple of drum under my dock just last night chasing bait fish. I would guess the bigger of the two was easily a 20 pounder. Hunting birds like quail or pheasants is put and take and has been for a long time like in a lot of other states. There is a small pheasant population on the outer banks and if you work hard you may flush 3 or 4 in a day if your dog can hold them. My chesapeake runs around in front of them and pins them and if I can get my *** moving when he does that, I can get a shot or two and there are also a lot of marsh hens that you can easily jump shoot . I got a few woodcock around the swamps and some wood ducks also.I've also seen lots of turkeys but they are much smarter than I am. Dove shoots are big here and there are lots of them. Last year we had big flocks of diving ducks but this year was too warm (Hot) and it was a bust . They do a lot of heavy duty goose and Swan hunting on some of the larger freshwater lakes and they do very well and I've already got an invite for next year and am looking foreward to it. Deer here are very small but there are lots of them and the National Forest has a number of parking lots and private deer clubs are always looking for members. Some are dog clubs and others are not. If you go up state in the farm country especially the peanut farms close to virginia you will see some NICE BIG bucks . The Carolina Sportsman has a classified section in the back with a lot of information about hunt clubs. No place is perfect for everything but I dont think you can beat the Beaufort area ( and I'm not from North Carolina) and if you want a moose you can always fly to alaska....Frank

willy
03-16-2006, 03:06 PM
I always loved New England MJ, my wife and I are in the Adirondacks every year and Vermont Maine and New Hampshire just about every year also, I tow a camper like you.
But as I have gotten older I have lost my interest in our weather anything past November here and feel I'm missing too much. And I just don't like the cold anymore. Never thought I'd be that way but it is true.
That area from northern Georgia South and North Carolina is just a fabulous region to me. And I would love to be down by Lord Franco but I don't think my wife is going that far south for some reason. Plus they are just building so much and there is so much traffic it's crazy. There are really nice areas still like where the Puhbah lives is fabulous but if your going you better get it soon ;)

reelapeelin
03-16-2006, 03:38 PM
Willy, I did some e-mailin' and lookin' around...Lake Jordan DOES have stripers!!...V20s right at home on big reservoirs like that...Mine gets salty sometimes, but chasin' stripes on big lakes like that is what my V20's set up for... :)...striper-fish in winter...booze-cruise all the Super Models layin' out on the docks in the Summer...sounds like a pretty good retirement to me... ;D ;D ;D...

Skools Out

that lake is heated too no joke. in the winter it's always warm near the dam. that lake is a cooling lake for power. warm water makes happy fish.

Willy

Just reading the thread and some ideas....

Think about (out of thebox) things like ...
(remeber you Are double dipping - so...)

Imspector Generals (IG) office - any department
Managment auditing - or any kind of auditing
Personnel Adjuciations, BIs, security
Any kind of security audits, or support functions...

Again just thinking out loud but with your background, skills, credentials ... there should be all kinds of stuff.

Also, ask Skools if state employees get a discount at state schools (aka college education)...
And when you find something in NC, let me know so I can move there (soon) also

-Cbill

Skools Out
03-19-2006, 08:22 PM
yes they do. if you or your wife were to work at UNC schools your kids go free. you could be a security officer for UNC Chapel Hill and kids go free.

willy
03-19-2006, 08:24 PM
Thanks for the advice, I would not exclude anything Bill and if I find something I would surely pass it along. My problem with a lot of goverment jobs is that I have to decline medical benefits and a lot of those jobs don't allow you to do it because of union or state rules. I have benefits from my job when I retire as long as I don't get covered by anyone else then they drop me like a hot rock ;)

Franco
03-19-2006, 11:20 PM
Hey Willy, as I remember you were gonna be the Male Exotic Dancer for Super Models!!!

willy
03-20-2006, 01:42 AM
Yea man that was the plan, but I promised the CEO I would cut back on those activities. She loved the money but the green eyed monster reared it's ugly head 8)

Franco
03-20-2006, 02:26 AM
Well thats a relief!! I was worn out having to work security, protecting you from long legged, big breasted, scantily clad beautiful young women. I could only have lasted another 10 or 12 years!!

willy
03-20-2006, 03:27 AM
Yea man, I know you had at least that much left but if Skools can't hook me up in NC why don't you and I buy that little bait shop I picked up the shrimp at. We can hire some hot little fluzzy to work the register and we'll draw those fisherman in like bees to honey. You and I will work a one day on one day off schedule alternating days. We'll hire a part timer to work two mornings a week so we can fish together and take the fluzzy out for special training ;)

Franco
03-21-2006, 12:15 AM
Willy - I have my eye on a prime piece of property for a Tackle shop - the big problem here is if your towing a boat you cant get into a tackle dhop parking lot - I know where a lot is for sale that will allow you to do that and be less thab a 1/2 mile from the ramp. Lets do it!!

Skools OMG

Franco
03-21-2006, 02:29 AM
I don't know Willy, land is getting pretty expensive here so it would be a big nut to pay

willy
03-21-2006, 03:23 AM
What do you think that little shop we were in pulled down last year gross

willy
03-22-2006, 03:29 PM
I bet you that guy is grossing 150 - 200 g's a year with very little overhead. Could be netting out 65-75 and living a nice life down there

willy
03-22-2006, 03:30 PM
Of course the killer could be what his insurance costs are on a commercial property ???

Franco
03-23-2006, 06:01 PM
YOU COULD BE RIGHT WILLY, THAT GUY IS ALSO IN THE GRADING BIZ, HE DID ALL MY LOT PREP BEFORE THEY BUILT MY HOUSE. HE IS A BIT OF A JERK - BUT HE'S NOT AT THE SHOP TOO OFTEN. I GO BECAUSE IT'S RIGHT ACROSS FROM THE RAMP.

willy
03-23-2006, 07:08 PM
Maybe we should approach him and make him an offer he can't refuse 8)

Franco
03-23-2006, 10:17 PM
Which way ya wanna do it? Good cop/Bad cop or Godfather Style?

willy
03-24-2006, 03:53 AM
I was thinking of using a little blackmail. Maybe we can get him drunk one night and get Stinky down there dressed in one of his outfits and take some polaroids when he gets frisky :D
Threaten to post them around the dock unless he sells out to us.
Badges we don't need no stinkin badges 8)

reelapeelin
03-24-2006, 09:47 AM
Hey RAMBO...uh willy...seems mundane to discuss after the tackle-shop caper, but a guy w/ the NC Wildlife got back to me and said they're stockin' Lake Jordan regularly w/yearling stripes and catchin' 'em regularly up to 20 lbs or so....

Now back to the exciting adventures of Willy and Franco as they muscle there way into the lucrative tackle-shop business!!... ;D 8) ;D 8) ;D 8)...

Franco
03-24-2006, 11:07 AM
Willy, do they make enough beer to get frisky with Stinky?

willy
03-24-2006, 12:30 PM
I hear on the street and from Skools that Stinky can be down right alluring when he wants to be. Might cost us a few bucks plus his travel expenses. He has his own ensemble. ;D

willy
03-24-2006, 12:36 PM
Rap I talked with the CFO yesterday, got her convinced we should look for property now. Either NC or Fla.
We might be making a trip down this summer to check out the coast area you guys were telling me about and also the lake.
I also want to show her the area by the Grand Puhbah and the Fort Meyers area.
Which lake are you fishing in SC, is it as big as Lake Norman?

Franco
03-24-2006, 12:40 PM
WILLY, FILL ME IN ON THE DATES. I'LL TAKE A DAY OR TWO OFF. I STAYED IN THE FT MYERS AREA FOR 10 DAYS, NICE AREA.

willy
03-24-2006, 12:43 PM
You got it Bud ;) One of the young guys who works for me has it real tough ::) he got married two years ago, pretty Irish girl. Her father just bought each of the three daughters a townhouse in Fort Meyers. Pre construction cost of 240 G's each. Had it for two years now. Worth over 375 G's.
He and his family have been going to Fla for years and his parents are there. He says the Meyers area is not as touristy as a lot of the rest of southern Fla. and he really likes the life style there. I wanted to run down and see it. See if I like it better than So. Easy St. :)Might be a little to built up for me

willy
03-26-2006, 12:07 AM
Have you fished that Gulf Coast at all yet Franco

Franco
03-26-2006, 12:09 AM
Nope, not yet. It's not a bad tow though, 3 hrs to tampa bay!!! I was there hiding out from a hurricane 2 years ago. Been on biz a couple of times, but no time to fish.

willy
03-26-2006, 12:28 AM
You been to that Fort Meyers area what ya think of it

Franco
03-26-2006, 01:04 AM
Real nice area, bigger than Sebastian. It's neat seeing sunsets on the water instead of sunrises! Would have considered that side for sure! Just get away from Tampa/Clearwater area - way way to busy! From Ft Myers is a close shop to fishing the glades

willy
03-26-2006, 02:57 AM
would that be what is considered tops Franco fishin the Glades areas

willy
03-26-2006, 03:03 AM
Because My buddy that has the condo down there says either they built or they are building, I forget, a ferry that takes him to Key West in a half hour. From Fort Meyers :o one of those high speed jobs

reelapeelin
03-26-2006, 11:41 AM
Key West to Ft Meyers in 1/2 hour :o...that ain't a ferry, that's a TIME MACHINE!!... ;D...

Lakes down here are Lake Murray (850 miles of shore-line, close to Columbia, SC), Lake Hartwell (1,000 miles of shore-line, close to Anderson, SC) and really secluded Lake Clark Hill (1,200 miles of shore-line closest big town, Augusta, GA)...lakes plenty big...lots of fishin' holes... 8)...

Come on down, I'll give ya the tour, bed and breakfast!!... ;)...

Franco
03-26-2006, 11:45 AM
The glades would be pretty wild to fish I think, a real wilderness. I thought they launched rockets ffrom Caneveral, not Ft Myers

willy
03-29-2006, 12:47 PM
I think it is a high speed hydro foil, supposed to be up and running for a couple of years now.
Hey Oz I was checking out those lakes on the maps, they are some big puppies huh! Are they shallow classic bass fishing type lakes or are they deep water hold everything type lakes. One of my buddies fished a lake in Georgia he said was huge but it was shallow and warm water only fishery, packed solid with bass boys on low slung rocket boats flying all over.

reelapeelin
03-29-2006, 01:04 PM
Willy their depths are what make these great striper fisheries...close to 200' in some places...lotta cool water for 'em to retreat to in hot summer, plus LOTTA bait... ;) ;D...

Still worried about the Ft Meyers to Key West in 30 mins... ??? ::)..somebody pullin' leg down there ;)...

If I did not go back home to Fla after retiring from Army I would have without question settled around Morehead City area, Swansboro, Emerald Isle, that whole pice of coast is awsome. So far it has not been ruined by developers like Panama City has.
