I<M new ,here ,.question I,m looking at a 1988 v 20 4cyc, boat looks very well kept, but a 4 cyc?? can it get you around?? and the only thing the owner says is wrong is the shift cable needs adjusted??? or is this a transmission problem.

If its the standard 470 merc, than yes it does get you around.
Gets up and planes just fine.
Sure some of the big horsepower outboards go faster.
I would be leery of the shifter cable adjustment thing.
Maybe he put the drive on and not have the linkage set up properly?

see if you can find out if its a 3.7 or a 3.0 . the 3.7 has the carby on one side and the exhaust on the other. The 3.0 has carby and exhaust on the same side .All I can say is the 3.7 suffer with head gasket failure the charging system and the water pump seal leaking water in the oil also there was a 3 inch and 4 inch heat exchanger the 4 inch keep them cooler
