Skool, I can relate. There is nothing like the beauty of those old wood boats. No doubt fiberglass made boating affordable for us (the masses). But a wooden boat is a work of art.
When I first moved to the coast, I considered buying a 42' Matthews like this:

Well, maybe not quite like this! Anyway, it was tied up at an island marina as a liveaboard, and I gave serious consideration to buying it as such. It had no engines, so it wasn't going anywhere soon. I could have bought it for a couple grand. I didn't do it (bought a condo instead), but I always wondered how it would have been.

I knew a guy once who had an old 42 foot Dobbin Sport fisherman that was built in Maine which had similar design features including the double plank mahogony hull and a wide carolina flare etc. He spent a small fortune getting the borers out and new wood replaced , an awl grip pait job etc and it was a beautiful and very stable old boat with teak and brass everywhere etc. A couple of years ago during the december Virginia bay rockfish season he hit 4 foot seas at the mouth of the potomac river and a bottom plank popped just at corn field harbor but he managed to run it up on a shoal and wade to shore but a detailed marine survey later showed that the hull screws were also eaten up so it was junked. I love the look of old wooden boats as long as they belong to someone else....Frank

personally i'd put 3 layers of 24 oz glass on one to make her easier to maintain and stronger at sea.
