Gas cap

I lost my gas cap. :you: I have tried all the 1 1/2 perko caps that west marine has and none will fit. it is the ome that came with the boat. I found a plastic on that goes on but its not going to last very long. I have thought about just replacing the whole thing but it would cost more then just the cap. Does anyone have an extra one or know of a place that has some.

done that too! couldn't find replacement. bought fancy new stainless with push button cap attached by bead chain and tiny screw.....that's now under the dock at Hoffman's in Manasquan... bought replacement fancy push button with bead chain......

I believe there is a grounding screw/lug on the other side. I remember hooking up the wire so there must have been something but I cant recall. I can take a look tonight and let you know for sure.

I also believe if I recall that 2 of three holes lined up and I had to drill a new hole for the third screw. or maybe I just used one hole and drilled 2 new ones. I do remember that the flange just barely covered the old holes but it did.

I had to replace the whole thing as well...don't know where Wellcraft came up with the original ones, must have been a special run.

I talked to someone at West marine and they said that the grounding wire that is attached to my old gas fill is not required. that's why so many deck gas fills don't have it. What's your take on this info?

I'd say that I'll believe the manufacturers more than some salesman at West marine. Everything costs money, and if the manufacturers spent the money to put a grounding wire on the system in the first place there must have been a reason.

It probably has something to do with plastic tanks vs metal tanks, but in all cases I personally like to err on the side of safety. So for me the grounding wire stays.

now that I think about it I may have hooked up the grounding wire to the back of one of the mounting bolts/screws.

Each metallic component of the fuel fill system and fuel tank which is in contact with fuel must be statically grounded so that the resistance between the ground and each metallic component of the fuel fill system and fuel tank is less than 100 ohms.
I grounded mine to my ground bar in the Cuddy ...

I didn't think he know what he was talking about. Im having trouble finding one that has the spot for a ground wire.

Just wrap wire a few turns around the hose and bend the stripped edge over and into the hose and slip in the fill neck and double clamp it down and you are grounded.

I would spend the money and get an all stainless one. Plastic has a way of falling apart in time in the sun and salt air. I bonded/grounded mine to the backside of one of the mounting bolts. I have a 10 gauge wire running to the bonding tab on the tank and another run to the negative buss bar.
