View Full Version : Ah ha - Yamaha 0X66 may be the choice

At about 455 lbs, a lot lighter than going with a mid 2000's era Evinrude at 525 lbs.
That, plus hard to find anything written bad about these motors, except for the fuel use, which is moderate.
Just another possibility while I consider what my next boating project may be.

When I was looking at outboards for my V20 I almost pulled the trigger on an OX66 250hp. The only reason I did not buy it was it had a 30" shaft. Your right they are good motors but a little thirsty.

250 would likely push the V....to 55mph !! But.......find an insurance company that would allow it, given 200 is the max rating.

Everyone I know who has the SWS II OX66 motors loves them, good reliable powerplant. how is the fuel burn? Has to be better than a carb 2 stroke, I assume
About the same. A regular 2 stroke outboard wether carbed or injected suffers from the same problem, air/fuel loss though the exhaust ports during the intake stroke as both ports are exposed at the same time. The only way to really change it is to go with a DFI where only the air is present and teh fuel isn't injected until right before it fires to reduce the loss while both ports are exposed at the same time.

yep, if im not mistaken on my 2 stroke principles the 2 ports are exposed simultaneously so that the air/fuel charge being forced up through the crankcase is actually what purges the combustion chamber of exhaust gasses. OX66 is still a good system though, in my opinion
It's scavenging at it's finest. The exhaust ports open a split second before the intake ports which creates an outflow out the exhaust and a void which sucks the pressurized intake gasses in. Problem with a conventional 2 stroke is it isn't a perfect scavenge and some unburnt intake gases will escape during the intake process.
I believe it is 235 horsepower
It varies, some were 200 and others 235, but the V21 went back down to 200. Early boats were rated for 200, then in the late 70's or so they upped it to the 235HP flywheel rated OMC, but once they went to propshaft ratings it went back down to 200 as a 235HP flywheel rated engine is only 200HP at the prop.

Got it. Well, too bad because there are a few 225's that might work.........
Still......0x66 at 450lbs isn't bad. The 150 is light at 375, but only pushes to 40.
