Cost for rebuild

I was wondering if anyone knows about how much it would cost to have my engine tore down to determine a chatter I have had in my engine ( sounds like a lifter tap on a car ) Engine was only rebuilt three seasons ago, I suspect that my VRO was not supplying proper oil for two seasons, finally removed it and this year was mixing manually but I still hear a tapping, especially loud betwen 3,000- 4,000 RPM's, motor runs great though. Trying to determine if I should just keep using it or have it taken apart and fixed ( Money is an issue ). The motor is a 1994 150 Evinrude Ocean Pro 60 degree looper. I am on Long Island in NY. Th x.

check the gear lube, look for metal on the magnets, its could be the lower unit making that noise, even though it sounds like the power head, some times the noise travels up thru the exhaust housing and its hard to tell. I've taken the lower unit off motors just to eliminate it from the noise. Regardless of the cause, it willl be far cheaper to fix now than it would be to wait till it got worse

I was onboard when a 250 Verado started making noise that we were sure was coming from the top end...as Spare says, apparently the noise coming from below water, traveled through the head, making it sound like the problem was up there...the Verado turned out to be parts gone bad in the lower.

Then make sure the stator on top of the motor ain't clickin' away w/something out of place...I had an Evinrude 150 coulda sworn was internal noise, turned out to be the stator...

yeah I was going to check the stator in the spring, I need to get a puller from somewhere. As far as the lower, it could be, the end of the screw is always perfect, no shavings. What makes me wonder is, when I purchased the engine, the mechanic AKA ( *#+hole) told me that he used a lower from a 95'. Don't know if it matters or not. I will check the stator though.Thx

I used a cheap puller I got from Harbor Freight to remove the flywheel on a 200 Evinrude (96). You will need to use fine thread bolts to attach the flywheel. Once you apply the needed pressure a good bump from a hammer and it should break free. I had to use a bench grinder to grind down a socket to get it to fit inside the flywheel to remove the center nut on the crank.

take a light and a mirror, look up under the flywheel, I bet you got a magnet loose

Might also call a good dealer and ask for likely causes.........
