My buddy is giving me his 2000 dodge 2500. It's needs a tranny rebuild give me some advice on tranny upgrades and what I will spend on a tranny rebuild. She is an automatic. I'm getting the truck for helping him for 2 days on his addition. The truck is clean as hell.

Is it the 24V diesel or gas?

If it's a 5.9L gas engine it will be a 46RE, and if it is a diesel it will be a 47RE. Either way have it upgraded so your not pulling it back out in another 60-70K miles to have the seals done in it again. The most common failure in them is the seals go out, and then it takes the clutches out in short order due to pressure loss from blown seals. Don't cheap out and not do the upgraded seals and a shift kit while it's out though, you will thank yourself down the road.

46RE trans then. I would go with at least a good TRANSTAR convertor, and give the guys at GOERAND transmissions a call and see what he reccoemnds for upgrades as he is THE authority on DODGE truck trannies.

On a serious note....if funds are limited one out of a yard may be the cheapest way to go. But it's another. Chrysler tranny..... So never know how long it will last.

Ive put trannys in any GM Ive ownded with 150K plus on em too and my Dakota mad it to 175 with no issues before I totaled it. Dads Ram has 220 on it and he replaced it around 140, pretty standard IMO.

I own a dealership, (still semi-inbusiness....thanks to cash for clunkers) used car style, and you can better believe, I put in far more chrysler trannys than any other make. I actually avoid chrysler to the best of my ability now, especially anything with the 2.7 in it, or the OD tranny. You can bet, the bottom end will be out of the 2.7, or the tranny out of it. Just stating my 10+ years of experience here.

But then again, I am bias enough, I cant begin to understand why anyone even buys a new MOPAR anymore.....let alone Goverment Motors.

Well you would know, I trust experience.

I couldnt agree more with you on the purchases. Ive had several friends and an uncle buy new or newer Rams (my dads is a 94) and man they are cheap looking inside. Riding in them even after getting out of my old 99 Tahoe I feel like Im stepping back in time! There is NO comparison to a new GM or Ford. Everything is so cheap and "plasticky" if thats a word.
