Well Snaggers after a few weeks of hard work a lot of money and aggravation FishBones is finally up to snuff.
After talking with that esteemed Old Coot from South Carolina I decided to put this out here and on another couple of sites I frequent for all to learn from my experiences.
As you know I love my 1997 HydraSport Vector 2250 FishBones. I decided to commit to her and bring her up to date.
Well one of the first orders of business was to get my live well plumbing working well, it has had trouble draining and the pump seemed to pump when it dam well felt like it.
So I got my butt down and there and started to diagnose what could be the problem with that plus my bildge pump which would only work in manual.
So I reached in where I could barely see behind the live well and grabbed a hold of the hose from the drain to the thru hull.
It crumbled in my hand. The part you could see was OK. the bottom half was completely dry rotted.
I started checking further and saw a couple of other hoses that looked like they were rotting also. Had a hard time getting to where I could hit them with a good flashlight.
I tried to get to the bildge pump and see if I could reach it to work on it and it is in a God awful location and I could not do it.
I took FishBones to Seaboard Marine and told the owner Steve, check everything, if it looks like it might need replacing do it.
Well, well well. Get the call a week later come on down Willy and bring your wallet!
Turns out the mechanic who is really good said Will, I started looking at the hoses and I realized you have a problem.
Turns out all the hoses under the floor were dry rotted and crumbling including six (SIX) that went to thru hulls. He had a rather large pile for me to check out. Could not believe my own eyes. Most were literally seeping water and had areas of where the middle re-enforcement mesh was just falling apart.
Very dangerous. So in order to get to them all they had to remove my deck lid over the tank which is about seven feet long, do the work and then go back and re-bed and caulk it.
While they were in there they replaced all my electrical connections and replaced a bunch of wiring that had seen better days. New Rule pumps cleaned and checked all thru hulls.
I was a little floored by my $1500 bill. But it was more than eight hours labor and over four hundred in hose, fittings and clamps and wire and connectors.
I went home and poured myself a little Jimmy Beam and called up the aforementioned Old Coot and co-miserated.
In his typical fashion he set my mind at ease, told me to shut the h@ll up and drink my drink.
So, if you have an older boat, check them hoses, check them well, even where you think you cannot see. I had six thru hulls that were ready to go at any time, and according to Murphy that would be when I am 20 miles out chasing fins.
So, since FishBones is all brand new and better than factory under the floor I decided to splurge on her a little.
Got myself a nice Standard Horizon VHF with DSC, got my MMSI # and now I have got my VHF talking with my seven inch screen Garmin GPS so I can yell for help when needed quick.
Also installed a nice new Guest dual battery charger inside the CC.
And since I can't sing to save my life I went and splurged on a nice Fusion stereo and speakers for FB.
Well all are installed by me and up and running, in 2011 new ETEC, new Garmin electronics, 2012 all plumbing and electrical redone, new pumps, stereo, VHF, new trailer, new leaning post seat and numerous other upgrades.
I do have to redo the bottom paint yet but basically I have a 1997/2012 HydraSport 2250 Vector and the maiden voyage is tomorrow with the CEO and one of my sons and daughters.

Good move Willy. Fishbones is worthy of those upgrades. She's a fine vessel and I hope to get to fish on her this summer.
On a similar note; MJ has been puzzled over why he gets a fair amount of water in his bilge at the end of the day. Not enough to set of the pumps, but a decent amount drains at the end of a day on the water. I guess it's time to start inspecting the hoses on his boat.

Thanks my friend and I agree she is a solid hull with a fabulous ride. She is worth it.
And yes, I believe you will find that the dry rot allows a seepage.
I believe after talking with the mariner down there that HydraSport may have had a bad lot of hose. Who knows?
But any one of those six could have sunk my boat.
Now I have all new high quality hose double clamped at all through hulls and a little peace of mind.

Man, that is a fine lookin ride. I did not realize the hydra sports had such a nice layout. I'm a big fan of usable fishing space without a bunch on seating, hence my love for my 81. Be happy with 15 hundo. I'm not ready to add up the cost of my current restoration but I am certain I am well above that. Congrats on having a solid ride ready for the season.

You planning on getting about 5 gallons of fish blood and painting the decks before the get together? That ought to send lumber into a heart attack.

Good going there willy!! As CB said I have a leak some place also?? I have filled theboat with water and nothing leaks any were?? I guess I have a b it more looking to go! I have only one thing below the water line, thats the transducer on bottom, CB and i put that in a few years ago, but see no water leaking around it when i filled the boat?? O ya I also have a fw bolts holding the bracket on also, but i have never heard any water in there either?

Well Kenny, CB, me and my son hitting the water in the morning!! we should have a great day!!

FishBones is getting better and better Willy.

Now lets get something done about that bottom paint. :bat:

When i put the 18 Fisherman in the water the bilge filled with water fast, and having no pumps or batteries on board (i just hung a motor on it for weight purposes to see how she sat in the water) i had to get her on the trailer fast. Luckily i dunked the trailer all the way and just floated her off and never pulled out. I thought the plug fell out! Nope. Broken thru hull. I firmly believe those plastic thru-hull fittings should be outlawed. When i rebuild my V she is getting stainless all around.

Thanks for the post Willy. FB looks great.

On Monday, I'm gonna be chasing down those same hoses in my Hydra to check for rot.

Jason, I hear ya about the bottom paint. They look so much better without it. I've been working on mine for a couple of weeks now. I'll post some pics when I get a moment.

Oh and this trailer looks much sturdier than the other one...NICE move there...glad to hear your towing woes are a thing of the past...in time, you'll come to REELY appreciate that Guest charger too...makes it SO EASY to keep those batteries HOT HOT and ready to go fishin' on a whim...:sun:

Thanks Jason, I will be trailering FishBones so the bottom paint is not a priority.
I decided to wait until this off season then I will do a full bottom job on her.
Money is flowing a little to quick.
All the thru hulls on her are good quality stainless and in good shape.

Willy my friend, you are so very correct on fixing the hose issue. I cannot help but wonder how many boats have sunk for exactly the same reason. i did the same thing when I had my deck off earlier this year. every single hose, gas, water, oil ...has been replaced... the peace of mind was worth every dollar I spent. Fishbones looks awesome!!! Well done!!

Well you better get some red paint and stencils and write "DONT PANIC" on the bottom so that if you capsize next to Lumber you dont give him a heart attack when he sees the bottom of your boat that close. :you:

Ken will be too busy my friend, I am going to do to him what Walter Mathau did to Jack Lemmon's car in Grumpy Old Men.

On another note the family run on FishBones did not come to pass today, was supposed to be 5-10 knots today, got all the way down to the Highlands and there is a mad dash getting off the water, apparently a front took a left turn and my 5-10's were 15-20. Guys were stacked waiting to get out.
@#$%#$@@!**%^##.

So took them all out for a nice early dinner on the waterfront instead.
Oh well, best laid plans you know:nut:

:

Holy crap you aint kidding....launched in Sayreville about noon yesterday....was getting wet while still in the river!....made it out to the mouth of the bay and wind was HOWLING....tucked in behind staten island around the Outer Bridge and it was not to bad...spent a few hours surrounded by slapping bunker all around the boat but no fish. Took a ride up to the Goethels Bridge for fun....At least we made it out but man I havent seen the wind blowing that hard in a while.

Yea when you see white caps in Atlantic Highlands harbor things are not good.
It was funny, I guess as the standard afternoon winds came on top of the front moving through people were bailing out quick and they were stacked up waiting to tie off and get their trucks.
Chinese fire drill.
I am just shocked at the marine weather forecast and the actual conditions, wow!
Not only did they have the winds WAY wrong but the direction also.

Boat is looking great. Can you share just what kinda hose you had? I got some HD vacuum hose that is semi-below the waterline as livewell drains..No leaks just curious as to where what and why..

willy
05-22-2012, 07:16 AM
Got no idea Ridge what brand it was, it was factory used reinforced marine grade hoses in various diameters and lengths from HydraSport.
The guys replaced it with a very good quality and pricey current manufactured hose.
I saw the names on the boxes but don't remember now.

willy

The mechanis said they see it sometimes where the hoses just start deteriorating, these were actually delaminating where the dry rot was happening. You would actually see the mesh inside reinforcement kind of corroded looking sticking through the dry rotted areas.
He said it could of been a bad run of hose from the original manufacturer.
