Okay fellow V20 forum members! Here is you chance to meet your beloved forum moderator and enjoy scenic and historic waters in the heart of New England's boating paradise.
THe 2012 Masshole raft up!
Location: TBD
Could be any where from Gloucester to Buzzards Bay
Date: TBD
Details: TBD
I'd really like to put a face with some of the virtual friends I have met here. Plus I think you all owe it to the big guy to make a pilgrimage to Mecca (Wareham) and kiss his feet, or something.
Anyway, MJ said it had been mentioned before but fizzled out. I'm willing to give it another shot. (Can we get a sticky here mj?).
Pick a date, pick a location, pick your nose... I'm willing to dedicate a weeks vacation to making it happen and will be glad to act as coordinator, trail guide, buddy boat, hostess with the mostest, whatever, before, during and after the main event.
Things to do, places to see all within trailering distance:
Gloucester,North Shore, a working New England fishing port, Andrea Gail, Perfect Storm fame. Fisherman statue. Anisquam River, Marblehead, Rockport, Cape Ann.
Boston, Here is an awsome trip that we like to do. Launch upstream at the Charles River ramp in Brighton. No wake all the way to the locks at the Boston Museum O' Science. Takes about an hour. On the way, Harvard, MIT, Esplanade (4th O'July fireworks), Cambridge and Boston port and starboard. Boston Harbor, We will often put people ashore for a few hours to sightsee USS Constitution (Old Ironsides), Fredom Trail, N.E. Aquarium etc.while we fish for stripers. Outer Harbor... Castle Island... Mobster Billy Bulger's turf, I can show you where he buried the bodies! historic Harbor Islands, striper and flounde rfishing. Return trip against a big city skline at night is cool.
South Shore, Plymouth, Mayflower, Pilgrims. Bay waters that should remind you Jersey boys of home. Green Harbor, launching point for a 18NM drive to Stellwagen bank. Giant Blue Fin Tuna, Whale watch city and a hop skip and a jump to Provincetown (No jokes about dropping your wallet and then kicking it to Wellfleet before picking it up).
Cape Cod & Islands. Canal, tourists, National Seashore, Hyannis, Kennedy Compound. Nantucket & Martha's Vineyard. Did I tell you guys that Ted Kennedy taught swimming at the camp I went to as a kid? "First you get out of the car and float to the surface". That blip on your fishfinder could be a tuna or a shark or an Oldsmobile Delmont!
Buzzards Bay, west end of CC Canal, rich people, sailboats, Woods Hole - Bob Ballard Titanic Fame, Legendary striper fishing and I heard that there might be some fluke out there too.
SO come on. You local guys should have no problem. For anyone else this should be a bucket list item.
It would be great if we could meet up for a day and if anyone wants to stick around for another day I'd be glad to buddy boat anywhere else on the Mass. coast.

I can take a few guys on my boat with CB and I, also for a couple of daysI can park a couple of boats here also. This sounds great, I hope it happens!
No feet kissing needed

Well, we have the Barnegat raft up coming up in July, so it will have to be sometime after that. Mid to late August sounds great for me. I have inlaws that live in Sturbridge, Mass. so I've made that trip lots of times... Never with a trailer, but I pretty much know what to expect. It's about 3 1/4 hrs for me to get to their house from mine, so it only should be about another hour - hour and a half to get to Buzzards Bay. Sounds like fun.

Well the response has been underwhelming to say the least! Is it the lack of New England hospitality?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL1ql_q-nQc
Is it something in the water?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5apEctKwiD8
The last two weeks of August are when I usually take my vacation. The weather here always seems to be perfect then. After Labor Day it is like throwing a switch.
Destroyer, I am about 10 mintes away from the Sturbridge exit on the Mass Pike/ I-84. My son works at the Sturbridge Host hotel. You don't have an excuse to not attend.
If anyone can make it but doesn't feel like towing their boat I figure I could take at few guys if we are fishing and 5-6 if it is just a raft up.
As an enticement I will offer to buy and cook a chikken lobster, a Qt of steamers and a couple of ears O' korn plus awl the Sam Adams you can suck down for the first dozen lucky respondents to sign up for the V-20 Masshole-alla-palooza - 2012. Be there or be square. Honestly guys, if you are on the forum you should plan to be there or have a good excuse, like a death in the family, your own death might be a barely acceptable reason. Anything else run it by the Moderator for a hall pass.
So just to throw a date out there how about August 18th or 25th?

RKC,
Like MJ I have cruised past there many times but never stopped. The spit is over two miles long, is there a particular spot? I've haven't noticed groups of boats hitting any one spot but I don't go around the back side much either. For those not familiar here is an image of the area:
http://www.monkeybutler.com/tmp/v20/6.jpg
If you have a good spot I trust your judgement. I know there is no access except by boat so if there is a beach it should be a good spot.
Another option is Basset's island shown on the map accross the bay from the spit. There is a long narrow piece of land there with beaches on both sides. The inside is good if you want less win, waves and boat wakes. As you can see it has some VERRRRRY nice scenery:
http://www.monkeybutler.com/tmp/v20/1.jpg
Here is a pic of the outer side, notice more wind and chop. It is outside of no wake zone:
http://www.monkeybutler.com/tmp/v20/2.jpg
Here is a pic looking right down the middle:
http://www.monkeybutler.com/tmp/v20/3.jpg
Usually folks don't beach their boats but you can anchor close enough to walk ashore. For some reason shortly after this photo was taken all the "scenery" packed up and left. Go figure?

There can be issues with the spit, such as:
Could be rough if the wind is SE.
There's usually a decent current.
Boats can get stuck the sandbar that runs along side of it on an outgoing tide. (High tide is 4pm or so, so that should be OK).
Not much "scenery".
There is a good beach on most of it (canal side), except for the end which is all rocks. I believe there is also beach on the other side, never really checked it out well there.
The only time I saw it crowded was when the tall ships went through. I was just thinking is we have a few boats, it may be difficult to snag a lot room at some of the other places. But I am open!
rkc
Road King Cole
06-08-2012, 07:43 AM
and actually, perhaps its not a good spot to "raft up", because even on a calm day there are some pretty big wakes from ships\boats going by.
next?
macojoe
06-08-2012, 10:06 AM
I don't know what the tides are at that time but we have a nice ride thur the canal and Cpe Cod bay and go to Barnstable Harbor, sand bar at low tide is great! Also some good fishing out around there. Could even launch out of Sandwich for that matter??
Road King Cole
06-28-2012, 08:17 AM
So what is up?
If we cannot find a "raft up" place, maybe we can do a "belly up place" (for those of us that still have bellies).
Plus it might be a better way to meet and greet everyone, Also, If I am late coming back from my trip, it might be easier for me to make it.

MJ and everybody else... How about we sell tickets... Includes a tee shirt, cap , or something else?
My experience is that people will say yeah I'll be there but won't show. Put $25 down and they will be there.
Any place where we can go and bring a couple of propane burners and boil some lobsters and clams and corn at a raft up. Price of admission could include a shore dinner???
Just trowing it out to encourage participation.
BTW, I seen on the classicseacraft board that they were pondering a raft up in Barstable Harbor Mid-August with marginal interest. I know we have some connections there, what about a multi-forum get together?
Road King Cole
06-28-2012, 07:09 PM
Again, I am only tentative. If we have weather delays riding the bike back from smokie mountains, I might not make it. So if you sell tickets I may just crash the party and eat bolonga sandwiches...
Just hope we all decide on a plan so I will know what is happening before we leave.
Also, in case the weather for the raft up does not cooperate, maybe we should have the belly up planned as a second option?
Speaking of shirts...
MJ, do you think my shirt and sweatshirt is still around?

No reason to make it more difficult then it has to be. Them who come great, them who don't to bad for them.
We can all decide when it gets closer what food we want to bring, just some dogs and burgers would be easy for everyone.
I am also ok with the idea of going some place if the weather is crappy,
As for teaming up with another site, this is are first time, and a Wellcraft thing, we don't know anyone there, I like the way this board gets along and am not to keene on the idea of having a bunch of guys we don't know join here, or hang with. After that we can raft up where ever you want.
Kidding aside any spot sounds good to me but where ever we go do you know if I could bring a 20# propane tank and burner to boil some seafood on the beach? I'm willing to bring a bunch of lobsters and stuff for a shore dinner if we can cook there???

Well looking at the tides its Barnstable Harbor, but if not doable cause of wind or something, Bassets if we can go there any tide?? MB you know that better so is it a any tide?
Figure if weather is good we could launch from Tempest or Sandwich and give a tour of canal and go to Barnstable. If wind is not right for that area we could go to Basset.
As far as food, simple is best but MB you can do as you see fit, I am sure no one will complain!!When I bought my boat it came with a grill, but I have never used it, and will need a mount for the rod holder for it I could dig that out if need be??
So lets see who is in for sure?? MB, CB, me and ??
What about the rest of you guys?? I have room in my yard for a few boats if someone needs to park some place? I have room in my boat and CB said he will bring his if need be, so if you don't want to tow we can still get out!
Monkey Butler
07-27-2012, 11:50 AM
I am definitely IN.
Bassett's has shelter if we need it and you can acccess the beach there in any conditions. The sand is a narrow strip at high tide and much of the island is poison ivy but it is well protected.
The canal ride sounds good to me though.
I am bringing my gas grill no matter what but if it looks like real good weather I'll bring a burner and some lobtser or steamers to share.

Too late - I already invited a big crew from Wisconsin - they have a V group up there.
They call themselves the " V Boaters of Darkness " and they all painted their boats BLACK.
A V boat hull will get burned on the beach as an offering to the Sultan of Squalls.
Should be fun - glad you'll be there Macojoe..............along with your blinking eye ball.

My best suggestion for you is - get there early, hide some provisions in your cuddy and enjoy the festivities. The burning of the V boat isn't something you want to miss.
Besides the black V boats, you'll be able to pick em' out of the crowd - the wives all wear thong bikini's, the men are covered in tat's and bald..........and their kids will be running around with mohawk haircuts.
Oh yeh, one more thing - their V boats are all overpowered - 300's and such...... If conditions are right............. you can join them in a nice round of demolishion boat derby on the bay.

I think I have moved from "tenative" to "probable" as the wife wants to be back by Friday.
.
Well that's awesome because it was looking like I was going to be surrounded by non-V20 owners.

My wife says she has absolutely no interest in seeing a whale from a 20' boat.
Wonder what she will think if an 18' Great White shows up looking for a seal for a snack.

Ok reservations are made!....I snoozed on reserving the place I had found up in Bourne near the canal and they no longer had Friday night available. Wound up ponying up the extra dinero and found what looks to be a cool place down in East Falmouth.....They have a private boat ramp and i can keep the boat in the water all weekend!.
Seems like it might be a ride via water up to the canal area and the places you guys were talking about hanging out but if the weather is good it is doable....if the water doesnt cooperate I can always throw it back on the trailer and go wherever you guys tell me to.
Going to turn this into a little mini vacation for the family. Arriving Friday early pm and leaving Monday afternoon. Seems like there will be plenty for us to see by boat up and above the Saturday festivities..

I'm just going to bring my grill and stuff to cook on it. It takes a while to steam the seafood and I don't want to hold anybody up or get left in the dust. Still will have plenty of extra eats in any case.
The weather does look very good, which weather babe do you prefer MJ? I mean for her forecast accuracy of course!
My wife's B'day is the following Thursday and I'm going to try to sneak a cake aboard without her knowing it. We'll see how that works out.
Looking forward to seeing you guys, can't wait.

still not sure?? looking for wind direction? but really not sure, was thinking sandwich thur canal to Basset or Tempest or Taylor pt, thur canal for Barnstable? this way we can show off canal to all that have never been in the canal.
Or we can just launch and go?? What do you guys think? Barnstable is a early low tide at 12:30, Basset is at 11:15, never been to Basset, can you go there any tide? Or just at low, Barnstable I know you have a long tide if you get there early in the tide, I say 3 or 4 hours total? there is also better fishing there if anyone wanted to give it a go, Fluke and Bass
What do you guy's think?

Being that it is still up in the air as far as location keep in mind that I will have my boat in the water in East Falmouth...Green Pond. I dont have any problem throwing it on a trailer to do whatever but of course looking out for A number 1(that's me) it would be awesome to do the whole day in the water dock to dock.
But like I said dont let it throw a wrench in the works....I'll be where ever I need to be.

08-22-2012, 08:10 PM
RW you can cut right thur Woods Hole and be at Bassets easy! I have made that trip a bunch of times from Tempest to the Vineyard. I am thinking more of Bassets if we can go there any tide, so we are not rushed. But Barnstable would have more fish if we wanted to do that, but there might be some Sea Bass on the west end.
Hey MB do you know if Bassets is a all tide spot, you have been there I have just drove by?
Started putting stuff in the boat today for the day! Grill, propane, foil, cleaned coolers, a couple of chairs if needed. Just have to put food, drink, ice now. Hope I have enough gas?? I just have a 110 gal tank:booty:

Here's my suggestion;
Since Rob Wilson is in E. Falmouth at Green Pond, I say we all meet just a little east of there in Waquoit Bay on Washburn Island. This way Rob can just motor out of GP and over inside Waquoit. The rest of us have several launch points to choose from. Tempest Knob, Taylor Point Marina, several in the Fairhaven area, Woods Hole, Green Pond or even Waquoit Bay itself has a ramp.
The fishing is good both inside the bay as well as outside for Stripers, Fluke, SeaBass, and Scup. Maybe even some Albies or Bonito.
The Bay is protected from the wind and we can raft or beach at Washburn Island during any tide. The swimming there is also very nice with sandy beaches.
There's my $.02

I 2nd that!! Never even thought about it till RW said he was at green pond! I think that would be perfect, especially since RW and MB are bring women and children. They can swim and all!
Sounds like a plan to me!!
How about Monkey Butler, and Road King? I am still trying to get Kenny to go?Its just a little ride thur Woods Hole!
Thanks CB !

Here is the chart for the area, you can see how close to Waquoit Bay is to Green Pond. Also even though its been a long time there is or was great fishing on the shools right out front or even a short trip to West Chop, East Chop, Middle Ground, ect...ect...

Well that obviously works for me!...that is REAL close. I've been on google earth for the last 2 weeks getting a lay of the land and had spotted Waquoit Bay and had planned on checking it out sometime over the weekend.
Lets see what the other 2 guys have to say....The only location that you guys talked about that was going to be a hike to and from by water was Barnstable (43 miles each way) and ending the day up there would have me with a long run at the end of the day. If that was where you picked I had pretty much made up my mind I would trailer over to that side.
I'm sure you guys can give me all the information on Saturday but I'm trying to come up with ideas for the family on Sunday. I was thinking either Cuttyhunk or Monomoy seems like a 20 mile and 30 mile run respectively....what's your guys opinion?

I am back, so we (wife and I) should make it. There will be other wives?
Depening on wind condtions, it could be a long ride accross the bay. But right now the forcast looks good!
Sat
E winds 5 to 10 kt. Seas 1 foot or less.
Now, not sure about the food thing, is this a pot luck kind of thing and if so, what should we bring? Potato salad? Or should we chip in on the costs?
We also have to be back home by late afternoon as we have plans for that evening.

I am bring my grill, and got a pack of dogs, and a few burgers, bag of chips, and a small container of store bought potato salad. Some drinks (water for me)
As far as were we are going it looks good for Waquoit, I have no problem with using Tempest, but trailing to Falmouth might be better for others?? But all looks good wind wise.
Wifes, RW, MB, RK have the women, CB and I are just us no women. Kenny is not able to be there either.
RW, Cutty i do able for ya, but Monomoy s a haul in what could be crappy water?
CB and I was thinking of meeting at Tempest at 10 am, by the time we launch and get over to meet RW it will be like 11 or so.
Ok just need to hear from MB and all looks good.
RK I will have my grill you can use, and MB is bring one also. My thought is bring what you want and if you have extra and want to share I am sure others will do the same. I have a pack of Dogs (8) and a box of Hubba Bubba burgers with (6) and the rolls, Kept, must, relish, already to go! I know I will have one burger and a dog maybe? I don't eat much these days.So CB has to eat alot, or chuck it out?
There should be some ok fishing in the area also? Fluke, Scup, Sea Bass, Stripers are a early early fish in that area so who knows?

Cool about it not being pot luck as we will also have another couple with us.
So, 12:30 in waquoit bay? Enter the bay through that little inlet and look to the west?
I also have a small grill, not a "marine grill", I can take. Never thought of using it on the boat before...

I can't beleive I am just seeing this thread. I plan on sleeping out on my boat tonight in Waquoit Bay. I will be drifting eels in the inlet with my 11 year old son at about 9PM. There will be a nice outgoing current then and hopefully we can land a couple cows. If I am in the bay a midday I will try to track you guys down for a beer. (I'll supply)

I have a transient slip at Taylor's point for Saturday night so I will launch there on Saturday morning early. I will motor over to Tempest and meet up there.
Depending on the weather Sunday I will either go through the canal and head out to Stellwagen or hit some of the BB spots I'm sure MJ will share???
Weather looks great! See you there.

Sorry, missed the question first time around.
Would not try Monomoy, bad water and conditions and a tough ride home if you get caught out. It looks good on the map but is nasty in person. I wouldn't go any farther than Hyannis where you could see the Kennedy compound and maybe see Talor Swift hanging out at her new house.
Cuttyhunk is okay but may be crowded. Tarpaulin Cove is nice and MJ could put you on some fish nearby I'm sure.
Or head up Buzzards Bay if you want to see the sights. Marion, Mattapoisett, the Canal are all worth seing.
Will talk to you Saturday.
