Garmin 441s vs compass???
So I hear Garmin GPS will interfere with a standard compass. The best spot to install my new GPS is within 10 or so inches from my compass... the install instructions call for a minimum of 26" from any compass to avoid interferance. This sounds rediculous to me especially for an instrument that should be meant to be mounted on or near the helm. anyone have any experience with this situation? let me know if I can get away with mounting near my compass. also, will running the GPS unit off of an external antenna (mounted well away from compass) change this scenario at all? ok guys, gimme some knowledge here! I suck at tech and this is my first GPS...

you can power up the gps and move it around on the dash to see when it starts to swing the compass. i ended up moving mine over on the passenger dash, but it has a 10" screen.

you could mount it then have it calibrated so it reads right, if you still have instructions it should tell you how. but most big boats all get the the compass adjusted as everything on a boat makes it read wrong, just move it around and see i an right, it will read all over the place in different spots!!

I mounted mine directly next to the compass. Haven't noticed any problems. I'll post a pic later.

If the GPS is working you wont need the compass and if the gps is out the compass will be working...you're good to go:you:

I had that thought this afternoon at work. I'm def mounting on my dash. I just hope my compass ball doesn't spin all day long, that might get annoying!

Thanks, I'll give it a shot but real estate for electronics on my 73' is lacking to say the least... 2 spots I can think of and one looks really awkward to me.

Hell yeah it does! You just made more work for me though. Now I gotta steal your new dash plan! Flush mount the garmin, organize the gauges and lose the $hitty black taped dash! Thanks???

Mine are mounted within 8" of each other. The GPS does pull it a few degrees off when I turn on the GPS but it functions like a regular compass only difference is I would hit Spain if I were heading for England.

My GPS/FF is right next to the compass. No Problem. East is wet and West is dry.
Don't imagine anyone on a V is using dead reckoning and plotting a course on a chart.

Thanks guys! Theres only one thing better than buying new toys, making old toys new again! to tell you the truth I was nervous after cutting out the dash, the steering wheel had about an inch + of play with most of the structure and reinforcement gone! the new dash panel locked it all up real nice though, solid as a rock again!
on a side note, I'm having a tough time getting the new tach to work. any way I've wired it no dice... I turn the ignition on and the gauge needle just rises slowly no matter what the motor is doing. pul/rev is set to 6 same as the previous tach. any ideas? I haven't wired up my temp gauges yet, could that have anything to do with it? 94' 225 oceanrunner
