i had an old honda 7.5 on mine and it did ok until i got back to the pass (inlets up north) and the tide was running out. made no headway and barely maintained steerage. i just opted to buy towboat us. to me it would make more sense as a trolling motor than a get home motor.

I was gonna post "it would certainly be better than a paddle" but had no experiance in the matter.

But like phat said, it did ok till he got to a running tide. It all depends on where you are. I wouldn't use anything smaller than a 25hp in my opinion. We had a 25 kicker on my dads old v20, but we fished offshore a lot and that why I have that opinion. If I used my boat in backbay alot then I would use my 2 HP Suzuki to get back to the dock if i needed to because its calm water.

i guess i'll keep my eye open for one then, not so sure how it will do fighting the afternoon wind/chop barnegat bay gets though

For Barnegat I'd use nothing less than a 9.9 as a get home engine. The smaller ones woud be great for trolling though. And in a lake that same 4hp would be fine for getting home. It all depends on the application. Personally I run a 9.9 Honda 4 stroke and I like it fine, but I'm rebuilding an 18 HP Evinrude Fasttwin (1960) for ocean and Raritan Bay/Sandy Hook area usage.
