Spare, On my 3.7 180 hp you had mentioned the Pertronix conversion . I am looking to pick one up this week,do you think i should go with the coil as well ? And does anyone know how Wellcraft fastened the gas tank hatch, was it with countersinking the screw heads or did they use s s washers. Thanks,

Don't know about the hatch, but I did do the Pertronics conversion a couple years ago. Its probably tha single best upgrade I did. I bought the Flamethrower coil with the module. It made alot of difference in starting and response time.

Mine had ss finish washers when I got it from the po. It doesn't appear to ever have had countersunk screws.

you might as well go with the coil while you're at it. Cut the tape off the engine harness and follow the purple wire back in the harness till you find the resister, its usually a hard wire u shape with black heat shrink, cut the wire above the resistor to eliminate it, replace with new purple wire and run it to the coil

Might try Car Shop Inc. I just ordered the Pertronix 2 ignitor and coil from them today as they seemed to have pretty good prices on these. My 470 already had the ignitor but a regular coil. Wanted to upgrade to the "2" and use larger plug wires and plug gaps.

Spare, I know i have to change the transom plate but i was just wondering if the bolt holes in the transome are the same for both the 3.0 and the 3.7 .

seems to be some slight performance advantages as far spark timing and a little hotter coil.needed? not sure, maybe just the latest and greatest for a couple more bucks.

you shouldn't have to change anything other than the exhaust pipe to the transom plate. Either transom plate has the same dimensions, check the spread of the motor mounts with a tape measure, they should be the same. They standardized most of the transom assembly back in 84. As far as timing goes, run no more than 5 degrees initial, I can't remember what the total was, but they had a service bulletin saying to set all the 3.7 to 5 initial. While you have the point plate off, check the advance weights and springs.

Spare you were rite , Checked the spread on both Transom brackets mounts and they are both 9 1/2 inches . That makes things a little easier ! The reason i thought i needed to swap them was that each bracket has a different configuration at the top .

they added two bolts somewhere along that time
