my mom's in delray and i need to find her a car THIS WEEK. i'm going down next week and she needs something reliable enough to drive back to new york with no issues. she's looking in the $6,000. to $10,000. range.
she likes the mercury grand marquis. i dont. i would like her to find a nice camry. 2005 or so. nice low mileage.

There's a lot to be said for the Grand Marquis. They are reliable and comfortable to drive, and they are a full size car so if, God forbid, there's an accident there's more car to protect you. I work near Teterboro Airport (Largest private jet airport in the nation) and all the Limo drivers drive the Grand Marquis. You know they would not drive vehicles that are unreliable.

yeah destroyer, she has one now that she swears by. needs an intake manifold and she'd rather go with something a bit newer. i just dont like the way they ride. after driving the jap cars for years it feels to me like piloting a land yacht. it just floats too much for me. i like to feel the road. of course it's her decision so whatever she finds is what she's gonna drive.

hard to beat the Gran Marq, most of the good ones have been snapped up by taxi, limo, over the road salesmen, the Police versions were pretty bare and they're usually bought in lots and shipped over seas(see them loaded up on ships at the terminal). Take a look at some of the Fords like the Focus and Taurus, the focus engine is the Yamaha power head that they use on the 115 outboard. You're going to pay a premium on a toyota regardless.

I take it she and her car is now in Delray and she is not from that area? Maybe fixing it would be a better option than a rush car purchase where she couldn't bring it back...

If she wants a mercury "boat", I suggest get her a M.M. rather than a little import. It's going to be her car not yours (I assume she will be driving it much more than you?)

and plus this is a boat forum...

road, my parents were snowbirds but now with my dad gone we dont want her alone down there.
reel, i'll be flying down to pick up my father in law's car so worst case, we'll all drive up together. i dont really think it pays to pump in another grand just to get another few thousand miles out of this thing.
also she has a friend down there who wants her car driven up here so my mom may drive her friends car up and look around up here. it seems to me that car prices are pretty similar here and there. i just think that she'll kind of be rushed to dump the thing down there. i dont figure it's worth all that much at this point anyway.

Its worth at least $500 at the scrap yard these days.

An "auto recycler" may give a grand if the body is in good shape.

Thanks Lumber, I'd like to keep all my old trucks. I would like them to stop leaking oil though. :sun:
