Does anyone have any insight into this motor? I can't imagine it's very different than my 1994 175 HP Evinrude.

If I go look at it... what should I look for? What should compression be at/near?

Thanks,

Aaron

COMPLETELY differrent engine from your 94, not 1 part will interchange between the 2 of them. It's a good engine, but a thirsty son of a gun. It's a 90 degree crossflow whereas your 94 175 is a 60 degree looper.

I think compression should be in 90-110 range and CONSISTENT across all cylinders w/in 5 psi....look at the overall cleanliness...hose rot...check lower unit oil for color (milky AINT good...indicates water intrusion)...too BLACK means too long since last change...clear amber is what ya want it to be...trim & tilt unit...take a hot battery to check that out...was it on a bass boat?...if so those guys generally run 'em WOT all the time, in fresh water, so that's the good and the bad there...hours??...controls??

Not really looking for a gas guzzler. It just caught my eye because its cheap. I'm thinking my best bet is to rebuild my engine. After I gather up some cash, ill bring it in to a shop to assess the damage.

Later 90's looper 150 hp Evinrudes are " nearly perfect" in terms of durability, but also fairly thirsty if you run it hard.

I believe this engine was rated at 162 hp at the prop, powerful for a 150.

You should be able to find one, questions would be - if re built or worn out with 2,000 - 4,000 hours on it.

Try ARG Marine, I bought a used motor from them - shipped it to me from FLA, very reputatable people.
